The aim of this paper was to verify the influence of urban features on the patterns of surrounding sound pressure levels. In these study areas, 28 points were distributed into two routes located in São Carlos (Brazil). These points were taken as references to measure A-weighted equivalent sound pressure levels (LAEq), as well as to determine the urban geometry parameters, such as the street height and width ratio (H/W factor), the volumetric index and the occupation rate. The results show that one of the areas presents a high correlation with the sound levels. Furthermore, among the factors studied, the building height, the volumetric index and the occupancy rate were highly important considering the increase of sound pressure levels. © Copyright 2017 NCEUB.

This aim of this research is to verify the thermal environment of a university campus by evaluating the relative contribution of urban elements in relation to the modification caused in the air temperature. For this purpose, real data of air temperature were collected at several points at the Federal University of São Carlos. These were then related to the local urban indexes using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) in order to develop a prediction model. This analysis considered three scales of different approaches, taking into account the radii of 25, 50 and 100 meters. Within the areas of these radii, the Occupation Coefficient (OC), the Urban Vegetation Coefficient (UVC), the Sky View Factor (SVF) and the Ground Cover Coefficient (GCC) were estimated. The ANN model was incorporated into a Geographical Information System and thematic maps were developed. Furthermore, a map classifying the potential cooling of the campus was also created. The results pointed out that the urban indexes under investigation presented different relative importance according to the scale of analysis. Furthermore, the 25 meter-radius model presented the highest performance considering the influence of urban indexes on the air temperature. Copyright © NCEUB 2017.

Adsorption-Mediated Mass Streaming in a Standing Acoustic Wave

Oscillating flows can generate nonzero, time-averaged fluxes despite the velocity averaging zero over an oscillation cycle. Here, we report such a flux, a nonlinear resultant of the interaction between oscillating velocity and concentration fields. Specifically, we study a gas mixture sustaining a standing acoustic wave, where an adsorbent coats the solid boundary in contact with the gas mixture. It is found that the sound wave produces a significant, time-averaged preferential flux of a “reactive” component that undergoes a reversible sorption process. This effect is measured experimentally for an air-water vapor mixture. An approximate model is shown to be in good agreement with the experimental observations, and further reveals the interplay between the sound-wave characteristics and the properties of the gas-solid sorbate-sorbent pair. The preferential flux generated by this mechanism may have potential in separation processes.

Entrainment and mixing in gravity currents using simultaneous velocity-density measurements

Gravity currents modify their flow characteristics by entraining ambient fluid, which depends on a variety of governing parameters such as the initial density, ∆ρ, the total initial height of the fluid, H, and the slope of the terrain, α, from where it is released. Depending on these parameters, the gravity current may be designated as sub-critical, critical, or super-critical. It is imperative to study the entrainment dynamics of a gravity current in order to have a clear understanding of mixing transitions that govern the flow physics, the shear layer thickness, δu, and the mixing layer thickness, δρ. Experiments were conducted in a lock-exchange facility in which the dense fluid was separated from the ambient lighter fluid using a gate. As the gate is released instantaneously, an energy conserving gravity current is formed, for which the only governing parameter is the Reynolds number defined as Re = Uhν , where U is the front velocity of the gravity current, and h is the height of the current. In our study, the bulk Richardson number, Rib=gU0Hb2 =1, takes a constant value for all the experiments, with Ub being the bulk velocity of the layer defined as Ub=pg0H. Simultaneous Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) measurement techniques are employed to get the velocity and density statistics. A flux-based method is used to calculate the entrainment coefficient, EF, for a Reynolds number range of Re ≈400-13000 used in our experiments. The result shows a mixing transition at Re ≈2700 that is attributed to the flow transitioning from weak Holmboe waves to Kelvin-Helmholtz type instabilities. Following this mixing transition, the entrainment coefficient continued to increase with increasing Reynolds number owing to the occurrence of Kelvin-Helmholtz billows that promote small scale local mixing and cause another marked spike in the flux entrainment values. Fabrication of New Thermoelectric Block Floor for Power generator

This was the study and designing of the thermoelectric block floor for power generator that are normally used for footpaths, traffic islands, and gardening together with solar radiation heat. Physically, this thermoelectric block is an octagonal block with a size of 19.8 × 19.8 × 6 cm. The block was composed of two layers. The upper layer received the solar radiation and produced the thermoelectric module heat by synthesizing thermoelectric materials and creating 4 thermoelectric modules from Bi2Te3 for one composition set where an aluminum sheet was used for cooling. Additionally, the lower layer was exposed to the ground with low temperature to produce the usable electric power. The efficiency of this electric power was tested with the solar radiation heat of the thermoelectric block floor and by the Thai Industrial Standards (TIS) 827-2531: Interlocking Concrete Paving Blocks. After installing the thermoelectric block floor at the Faculty of Industrial technology, Sakon Nakhon Rajabhat University, it was found that the block was usable as defined by TIS 827-2531: Interlocking Concrete Paving Blocks; meanwhile, the test on the electric power of the thermoelectric block floor indicated that the maximum electric potential difference was 73.91 mV where the temperature difference was 6.2 K measured from the surface of the block. In addition, the maximum electric power was 88.25 mV where the solar radiation was 1124.5 W m-2. Notably, this electric power of the thermoelectric block floor was directly variable following the solar radiation value. However, if used for power generator or as an alternative energy for engineering activities, the thermoelectric block should be properly designed and developed to produce higher level of electric power and more of them should be created for both series circuit and parallel circuit.

Many authors use various supporting / input factors and supporting books related to the titles discussed. because Tuak Nias or tuonifaro contain low 4-5% ethanonic elements and contain 90% alcoholic elements so that the fuel easily burns easily in the combustion chamber and produces great power. By bonding micron-thin polymer layers with an electrically conductive layer, we can utilize the bi-metal effect to create a soft, thin, electrically-activated thermal actuator (ETA), which can be used in printed soft robots. Using ETAs have shown quite remarkable potential in previous works. However, to reveal their true capabilities, we propose to utilize a multi-layered ETA. In this research, we analytically model the actuator for both the bi-, and more importantly, tri-layer ETAs and analyze their behavior. We develop a simple intuitive model to better explain the benefits of the tri-layer actuation and to estimate the optimal design parameters. We verify the models by conducting an experiment to measure the curvature change for different third layer thicknesses. The experiments show a significant improvement in performance of the tri-layer actuators and display a good fit between the simplified analytic model and the full model. © 2017 IEEE.

This study aims to apply data mining techniques with cluster analysis on stock data registered in LQ45 in Indonesia Stock Exchange. The cluster analysis used in this method is k-means algorithm, the data in this research is taken from Indonesia Stock Exchange. The cluster analysis in this study analyzed the characteristics of data volumes and stock values, while the results in this study were presented in the form of cluster members visually. Therefore, this cluster analysis in this research can be used for quick and efficient identifier for each member of LQ45 index cluster based on share value for each cluster and its volume. The identification results can be used by beginner-level investors that begun to be interested in stock investments to help make informed decisions about stock trading on desired cluster groups. © 2018 IEEE.
