An important component of teaching introductory Strength of Materials (Mechanics of Materials) concepts to undergraduate engineering and technology students is the inclusion of laboratory experiments, which give the students the opportunity to conduct tests and collect data on the materials to obtain relevant properties. These laboratory experiments also allow students to observe firsthand the behavior of materials under different loading conditions, thereby giving them a greater physical feel for these different behaviors. The equipment used to perform small-scale, desktop experiments can range from simple set-ups constructed using every day materials available at a local hardware store to more sophisticated and expensive apparatus manufactured by companies specializing in educational lab equipment. One question of interest to faculty when faced with the decision of selecting the apparatus to be used for these small-scale experiments is whether student perceptions, motivation, and learning in the course are affected by the sophistication and quality of the equipment used to conduct the experiments. The purpose of this study is to collect and evaluate data to determine if using more sophisticated, higher quality experimental equipment results in improved student outlooks and learning compared to using simple set-ups constructed from every day materials purchased at a hardware store. Data collected include student feedback obtained from short, written surveys about the effectiveness of the laboratories performed with higher quality desktop equipment. The usefulness of the higher end set-ups for improving student understanding of key concepts is evaluated by analyzing student performance on related examination questions and other course components for a cohort who used more expensive apparatus versus a cohort from the previous year who used simple experimental set-ups. Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) pose a growing global health threat, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where limited surveillance capacity and under-resourced healthcare systems hinder timely detection and response. Migratory birds play a significant role in the transboundary spread of AIVs, yet data from key regions along migratory flyways remain sparse. To address these surveillance gaps, we conducted a study between December 2021 and February 2023 using fresh bird guano collected across 10 countries in the Global South. Here, we show that remote, uninhabited regions in previously unsampled areas harbor a high diversity of AIV strains, with H5N1 emerging as the most prevalent. Some of these H5N1 samples also carry mutations that may make them less responsive to the antiviral drug oseltamivir. Our findings documented the presence of AIVs in several underrepresented regions and highlighted critical transmission hotspots where viral evolution may be accelerating. These results underscore the urgent need for geographically targeted surveillance to detect emerging variants, inform public health interventions, and reduce the risk of zoonotic spillover.

Development of anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) for biological nitrogen removal in domestic wastewater treatment (Case study: Surabaya City, Indonesia)

Domestic wastewater effluent is the main contributor to diverse water pollution problems. The contaminants contained in the wastewater lead the low quality of water. The presence of ammonium and nitrate along with phosphorus are potentially cause eutrophication and endanger aquatic life. Excess nutrients, mostly N and P is the main cause of eutrophication which is result in oxygen depletion, biodiversity reduction, fish kills, odor and increased toxicity. Most of the domestic wastewater in Surabaya City still contains nitrogen that exceeded the threshold. The range of ammonium and orthophosphate concentration in the domestic wastewater is between 6.29 mg/L – 38.91 mg/L and 0.44 mg/L – 1.86 mg/L, respectively. An advance biological nitrogen removal process called anammox is a sustainable and cost effective alternative to the basic method of nitrogen removal, such as nitrification and denitrification. Many research have been conducted through anammox and resulted promisingly way to remove nitrogen. In this process, ammonium will be oxidized with nitrite as an electron acceptor to produce nitrogen gas and low nitrate in anoxic condition. Anammox requires less oxygen demand, no needs external carbon source, and low operational cost. Based on its advantages, anammox is possible to apply in domestic wastewater treatment in Surabaya with many further studies.

One of the causes of open defecation (OD) is low awareness of local community towards open defecation free behavior. This community does not have a healthy toilet and usually defecate in the river. This poor environment is coupled with poverty and small footprint. Therefore, the *** methods should be modified by including the finance concept in form of stimulant funds to accelerate ODF targets by using appropriate technology for land limitations. The construction of healthy toilet in Kelurahan Kebonsari, Jambangan sub-district, was conducted in RW2 which consisted of RT 6 (4 units) and RT 7 (1 unit) and 2 units in RT 2 of RW 3. Construction was initiated with focus group discussion and indepth interview to locate the proper location to be triggered. Healthy toilet construction was conducted in cooperation among self-help community, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), and the community itself. Every month the users had to pay the toilet construction (capacity of 0.75 m3) of IDR 100,000 for 10 months. Therefore, with this healthy toilet construction, KelurahanKebonsari becomes one of ODF village in Surabaya City.

This paper addresses the problem of damage detection technique of structural health monitoring (SHM). Kernel principal components analysis (KPCA)-based generalized likelihood ratio (GLR) technique is developed to enhance the damage detection of SHM processes. The data are collected from the complex three degree of freedom spring-mass-dashpot system in order to calculate the KPCA model. The developed KPCA-based GLR is the method that attempts to combine the advantages of GLR statistic in the cases where process models are not available and a multivariate statistical process control; KPCA. The simulations show the improved performance of the KPCA-based GLR damage detection method.

This is an evidence-based paper based on research that has shown faculty beliefs influence their classroom practices and reformed teaching methods like engagement teaching improve student performance and retention in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. To better understand the relationships between faculty beliefs and practice and student outcomes such as performance and attitudes, three tools were utilized. The first tool is a 24 question guided interview to gauge general beliefs towards teaching;the second is the Approaches to Teaching Inventory (ATI) that measures faculty beliefs towards instructor-centered knowledge transmission and instructor-centered strategies versus student-centered conceptual change intention and strategies. Lastly, the third tool is the Reformed Teaching Observational Protocol (RTOP) which is an observational protocol that quantitatively measures degree of student-centered classroom behaviors. By combining ATI and RTOP scores with emergent theme (ET) analysis on relevant interview questions, faculty characteristics influencing student outcomes can be determined. This work addressees the research questions, "What is the relationship between faculty beliefs and practice?" and "What is the relationship between faculty practice and student outcomes?" 30 faculty members who teach freshman or sophomore level science, math, or engineering courses at a large, southwestern university were interviewed about their teaching beliefs, were surveyed using the ATI, and were observed using the RTOP. Interview questions were analyzed using emergent theme analysis and related to their ATI responses and RTOP scores. The interview question responses were coded numerically as either teacher-centered (-1), student centered (+1), or mixed/neither (0) using the dimensions of the ATI as a basis.
