Geotextiles feature reinforcement, drainage, filtration, separation, and act as a moisture barrier, and are commonly used in civil and geotechnical engineering applications. Using nonwoven fabrics as geotextiles has become a recent trend;therefore, this study combines crimped polyester (PET) fibers, recycled Kevlar unidirectional selvage fibers, and low-melting-point PET (LPET) fiber to make PET/Kevlar/LPET nonwoven geotextiles, the mechanical properties of which are then examined. The test results show that the tensile strength and tearing strength of the PET/Kevlar/LPET nonwoven geotextiles increases as a result of an increasing needle-punch rate from 150 punches/min to 200 punches/min. The mechanical properties along the cross machine direciton (CD) of the nonwoven geotextiles is greater than that along the machine direction (MD). When the needle-punching rate exceeds 200 punches/min, the mechanical properties of the nonwoven geotextiles slightly decrease.

This research was studied in the relationship of factors affecting the spread out of the rice bug by developing the mathematic equation in order to estimate the rice bug spread risk. The household and field survey showed that the weed on rubber plantation is one of the important factors as the bug use for their habitat. Therefore, the distance from rubber plantation plays an important role on the severity of the spread out and the outbreak of the rice bug. The mathematic equation expresses the relationship between the distance from rubber plantation and the number of the rice big found from the study was: y = -0.3678x + 94.419 (y = number of the rice bug and x = distance from rubber plantation). After applying the equation to the study area we can obtain the risk of rice bug spread out map of two important rice growing district of Phatthalung province. About 64.7% of total rice area of Paphayom district has been forecasted according to the equation as the moderately risk of the spread out of the rice bug (20-60 bugs/sqm), whereas more than half of the total rice growing area of Khuankanun district was forecasted as light and very light severity.

This manuscript records an effort to explore viable ways for a traditional commuter rail, Atlantic City Rail, serve current travel market. Since viruses are able to influence the trophic status and community structure they should be accessed and accounted in ecosystem functioning and management models. So, this work met a set of biological, chemical and physical time series in order to explore the correlations with marine virioplankton community across different trophic gradients. The case studied is the Arraial do Cabo upwelling system, northeast of Rio de Janeiro State in Southeast coast of Brazil. The main goal is to evolve three type of artificial neural network (ANN) by genetic algorithm (GA) optimization to predict virioplankton abundance and dynamic. The input variables range from the abundance of phytoplankton, bacterioplankton and its ratios acquired by one in situ and another ex situ flow cytometers. These data were collected with weekly frequency from August 2006 to June 2007. Our results show viruses being highly correlated to their host, and that GA provided an efficient method of optimizing ANN architectures to predict the virioplankton abundance. The RBF-NN model presented the best performance to an accuracy of 97% for any period in the year. A discussion and ecological interpretations about the system behavior is also provided.

Within the concept of sustainable construction, with sensible and conscious use of finite natural resources, every effort to save and reuse raw-materials is considered an important step to be adopted in buildings, from project, implantation and construction to operation and maintenance throughout their lifecycle. This study aims at showing the application of a system that reuses condensed water drained from air-conditioner evaporators (which are usually disposed of), and a plan to use this water for toilet flushing, reducing consumption of treated water bought from water companies. The authors verified that each air-conditioner specified in the project of a commercial building--used as reference here--produces 4.8 L of water per hour of operation. This result in a daily accumulated volume of 4,290 L, which represents a significant part of the amount needed to supply all the toilets in the building. A water capture system located at a strategic intermediate floor would be able to store this water and pump it into a special reservoir on the roof of the building, to be distributed into toilet flush pipes. By applying this technology, the authors seek to considerably reduce the expected treated water consumption and consequently decrease water bill costs.

Paleo-hydrology is an important study which simulates the historical hydrology at the lack of observed period, calibrated at the present period and predicted the future hydrological condition. The study of paleo-hydrology is to obtain the historical evidence for the present hydrology and improve the accuracy of the statistical analysis and the prediction modeling assessment. Paleo-inundation assessment is the study of historical inundation under flood events which occurred prior to direct measurement of hydrologic parameters using modern methods. The ultimate objectives of this study were to estimate paleo-inundation under extreme floods using historical literature and incomplete data records. This paper focused on an application of estimating historical inundation conditions under paleo-floods using modern technologies at the river basin scale.
