Microscopic simulation has been widely adopted to predict future traffic conditions. Vehicle-to-vehicle communication of hazard alerts has been proposed for use on freeways, but its impact on freeway traffic has not been evaluated. This paper describes the method of modeling freeway incidents with and without the use of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) hazard alerts. Based on the NGSIM oversaturated freeway flow algorithms, drivers' responses to incidents are modeled and evaluated. The simulation results show how the V2V alerts could influence freeway traffic, and provide initial estimates of their benefits. © 2009 IFAC.

The UAE location on the edge of a very warm sea and hot and dry desert create the optimal conditions of inland fog forming. The afternoon sea breeze, which is almost a daily event in UAE coastal areas, transports moisture inland, then at clear sky conditions at night, the large surrounding desert radiates heat very efficiently and temperatures fall quickly. The rapid cooling of accumulated inland moisture during the night represents the optimal conditions for fog development. Fog detection and monitoring algorithms from remote sensing data have been developed during the last two decades. Retrieval of fog-related information from geostationary platforms has matured into applications at operational level in many national weather service programs in the USA, Europe and more recently in China. In this study, a satellite-based tool developed at EIAST for fog detection and monitoring in the UAE will be presented. Data collected by SEVIRI instrument onboard of the European Satellite Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) were the main source of spatial data. The development approaches and the preliminary results will be presented and discussed in this paper.

This paper presents a novel coverage path planning method in indoor environment for a mobile robot such as cleaning robot. Overall region is divided into several sub-regions based on the virtually extracted doors. The algorithm is inspired from the usual way of dividing an indoor environment into sub-regions, i.e., rooms based on the identification of doors. The virtual door algorithm extracts the virtual doors by combining a Generalized Voronoi Diagram (GVD) and a configuration space eroded by the half of the door size. The region to region cleaning algorithm is also proposed based on the closing and opening operations of virtual doors. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been tested on various real indoor environments using a commercially available cleaning robot.

Removal and recovery of heavy metals from simulated wastewater using insoluble starch xanthate process

The effectiveness of insoluble starch xanthate (ISX) for removal and recovery of heavy metals [Cd(II), Cu(II), Hg(II), and Ni(II)] from simulated wastewater was evaluated. The metal-xanthate interaction is considered as sorption process involving two simultaneous reactions: (1) complexation of metal with xanthate groups;and (2) decomposition of xanthates. The kinetics and equilibrium studies indicate that the rate of metal uptake by ISX is quite rapid and the Freundlich constants indicate that the interaction is chemisorption. The metal uptake capacity of ISX remains almost the same in the pH range 5-7. The affinity, and also the selectivity of metals for xanthate, follow the reciprocal of metal-ethylxanthate solubility product. The aqueous phase conditions and ISX dosage can be controlled to selectively remove metals from the aqueous phase containing mixtures of metals [Cd(II), Cu(II), Hg(II), and Ni(II)]. Also selective recovery of metals from ISX sludge containing the metals is feasible. © 2008 ASCE.

Based on a series of experiments under both ice-covered and free surface conditions, the present article discusses the role of flow velocity and critical shear Reynolds number for incipient motion of bed material. The influence of the resistance coefficients of both the underside of the ice cover and the channel bed on the location of the maximum velocity has been discussed. In addition, the impacts of ice and composite resistance coefficients on flow velocity for incipient motion of bed material have been assessed. The diagram describing the critical shear Reynolds number and the dimensionless shear stress for the incipient motion of sediment under ice covered conditions with different under cover resistance coefficient has been established. The effects of grain size on densimetric Froude number for incipient motion of bed material have been investigated. A relationship between the densimetric Froude number for incipient motion of bed material and the median grain size of bed material as well as the roughness coefficient of channel bed and roughness coefficient of ice cover has been established.

Students completing an engineering technology degree, such as Youngstown State University's civil & Construction engineering technology (CCET) bachelor's degree program are expected to be productive in design offices and in engineering departments of construction firms. Accordingly, the curriculum has evolved over the past thirty years to include design projects of varying complexity in many courses. This philosophy has now been expanded to provide a multidisciplinary design experience for engineering technology (ET) majors. This paper describes the planning an implementation of a pair of courses required to be taken concurrently by the civil & Construction engineering technology (CCET) and Electrical engineering technology (EET) baccalaureate students during their senior year. Mechanical engineering technology (MET) may elect to take one or both courses as well. These courses serve as a capstone experience that incorporates both individual and team interdisciplinary design projects. CCET 4884 - civil and Structural Facilities Design is an interdisciplinary capstone course that provides an overview of the requirements and design procedures for civil and structural systems including site development, utilities, foundation, wall systems, framing systems and floor system design as well as specifications & estimating. This course has a major interdisciplinary group project. EET 4880 - Electrical and Mechanical Facilities Design is a multidisciplinary course that acquaints the student with physical processes involved in heating, ventilating and air conditioning;plumbing;electrical power distribution;lighting;and communication systems. Several small group labs and studies that are focused on system design are required by this class. These two courses must be taken concurrently. They lay the groundwork for overall facilities design and the assignment of projects in each class that incorporate elements from the other. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

The future of America's global competitiveness depends upon a well-educated, technologically literate workforce. However, if proactive measures are not taken in the near future, the United States will face a serious shortage of scientists, engineers, technologists, and mathematicians because high school students, especially those from underrepresented groups, are increasingly losing interest in these subjects. The key in reversing this trend lies in our ability to promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects and professions in a more socially relevant, real-world context and to recognize the differences in learning styles and self-efficacy between males, females and minorities. In an effort to increase the number and diversity of students pursuing engineering related majors, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte has adopted a comprehensive and integrated approach involving three separate National Science Foundation (NSF) funded projects. Together, the projects are designed to raise the engineering awareness of middle and high school students, teachers and guidance counselors. The central project is the Enhancing Diversity in engineering technology (EDIET) project which focuses on the establishment and support of North Carolina Junior engineering and technology (NCJETS) clubs at local area high schools. In order to receive project support, a high school club must have a population of at least 50% non-traditional engineering student types. The clubs compete in regional competitions such as balsa wood bridge building, trebuchets, robotics, and math tests, etc. The EDIET project also sponsors week long summer engineering technology camps hosted by the university. To reinforce the impact of the EDIET project, the Teaching engineering to Counselors and Teachers (TECT) project was developed to strengthen the way in which high school teachers and counselors approach the integration of engineering based materials into their courses and counseling

This paper presents some of the hurdles that the engineering technology programs at Youngstown State University struggled with during the reaccreditation process and are still refining. With less formal direction from TAC-ABET as to what they are focusing on or require for accreditation, it took several iterations along with networking with other institutions to gather insight and suggestions just to begin to understand the depth and breadth of the assessment process and its impact on department resources. Starting at the beginning of the process and continuing through the revisions and the ongoing refinement. The topics discussed include;what to assess and how to assess the criteria identified;development of the assessment rubrics;decisions on how to collect the data;restructuring courses to cover topics that need to be assessed;revising the rubrics and data collection to gather meaningful data;and development of a sustainable internal assessment process. Issues generated from the managing of the ongoing assessment efforts on workload and strategies for developing a sustainable assessment and evaluation process for a multi-program engineering technology department are considered.

Teaching models have evolved as research on learning has progressed. Kolb and Felder championed a learning styles paradigm while Dale developed a "Cone of Learning" model to address teaching styles. To maximize the learning experience for one talented undergraduate, we developed a project that required active leaning by the student and opened the potential for improvement of the civil & Construction engineering technology curriculum. Understanding design loading requirements and combinations of loads is a challenging part of the design process, yet it is often not emphasized in undergraduate engineering or engineering technology curriculum. Application of ASCE 7, Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures is often an incidental part of one or more design courses. Its proper application, however, requires significant class time so that students can gain the proper understanding of its many facets. Consideration of transient loads imposed during the construction process receives even less attention. Design for these loads is generally dismissed as "means and methods" which are the responsibility of the contractor. However, many graduates are employed by contractors or consultants working for contractors. Understanding that there is a difference between design loads and construction loads is, therefore, relevant and important. This paper looks at construction loads in accordance with ASCE 37, Design Loads on Structures During Construction and is based on an independent project undertaken by a student. He was tasked with researching the topic and preparing a set of notes for presentation to an undergraduate engineering technology class. This paper presents a summary of the topic to show how an undergraduate student would present the material. A review of the material prepared by the student provides insight into the level of understanding of this topic that can be achieved through active independent study and highlights the need for civil and construction e
