This subject, Urban Wet-Weather Flows, is comprised of three basic subareas - combined-sewer overflows (CSOs), sanitary-sewer overflows (SSOs), and stormwater discharges. Major proceedings related to wet-weather flow (WWF) published during 2004 were the following: (1) WEFTEC 2004, 77th Annual Conference and Exposition (WEF, 2004);(2) Innovative Modeling of Urban Stormwater Systems, Monograph 12 (CHI, 2004);(3) Watersheds 2004 Conference (WEF, 2004);and (4) World Water and Environment Congress of ASCE/EWRI (EWRI, 2004). In addition to the conferences listed above, the 2004 Annual Conference of the American Water Resources Association and the Low-Impact Development Conference had significant sessions on wet-weather flows. However, no paper proceedings were published.

Development in sensitive watersheds continues to pose environmental problems for receiving waters. One contributor to the long-term pollution of sensitive waterways is building and construction materials. However, the long-term effect of many building materials on the environment has not been quantified. Prior testing of these materials in the laboratory has indicated that the potential for release (primarily nutrients, lighter hydrocarbons, pesticides, and metals) is significant. Additional testing for metals' release from aged roofing panels also has shown that the potential for pollutant release still exists after 60 years of exposure to the environment. The data that is missing from a complete evaluation of specific building materials is behavior over the lifespan of the material, including the critical period of initial exposure. This paper provides an overview of the limited literature available on the subject, results from laboratory testing of common building materials and aged roofing panels, and an overview of the next phase of needed research. This paper reviews the background of the newcomers that we are "formally" educating in construction related programs in Mexico. Most of them come from either civilengineering or Architecture, and only a few from Construction engineering or Building Construction programs. Curriculums at these programs in the past have been too rigid, namely a fixed set of courses for all students without or with just few electives. The most recent trend is to educate generalists, who may specialize later in a particular field of their choice, construction for instance. There is evidence that students enrolled in those programs, on the average, take only a few construction related courses, and only a couple of management related courses, after four or five years of college education. However, many of them will incorporate into the construction industry. This raises the question: Is this the proper approach? It appears that today's programs are failing to provide proper education to the future construction actors, at least at the undergraduate level. Moreover, they are not being prepared to carry out properly their roles as construction leaders, particularly in the management arena. What is the solution then? How to combine the needs for educating generalists and at the same time prepare them as future (management) leaders for the construction industry? The authors propose in this paper a perspective that may allow a gradual learning process, both theoretical and practical, for those interested in pursuing a career in construction.

Drinking water quality can undergo dramatic changes in distribution systems. Because of this, many new regulations focus on monitoring water quality within the distribution system, causing utilities to face new challenges in maintaining high quality delivered to the consumer's tap. To help meet these challenges, several groups worldwide have developed computer-modeling tools so that utilities can evaluate and manage water quality in their distribution systems. This paper reviews the water-quality problems that typically occur in distribution systems, the causes of these problems, and the modeling tools that are becoming available to help solve these problems. Measurements describing the evolution of wave energy spectra as waves propagate across a large shoal are described. The shoal is shore oblique, 2 km by 10 km in extent, with relief of up to three meters over bathymetry with ambient depth 10-12 m. The region is sediment starved, and bottom roughness displays spatial variability due to rock outcrops. Field measurements intended to investigate the effects of this shoal on waves, currents, and sediment transport in its lee reveal strong cross-shore gradients in energy density and energy flux, well outside of the surf zone, in conditions of minimal wind, which are attributed to bottom friction. The dissipation displays the expected frequency dependence, in that it decreases in significance as wave frequency increases, but this trend is not as strong as available theoretical predictions would suggest.

Countries emerging from centralised economies presently face the challenge of rapidly adapting their production structures to the market economy. In the last twelve years Poland has consistently evolved in that direction leading to the development of substantial construction investments and to the advent of thousands of small and medium construction companies. However, construction staff does not seem to fully stand for the demands of this shift, especially because of the lack of management skills now required. Portugal benefits from an uninterrupted process of development in a free economic market environment. Nevertheless, the broad nature of civilengineering undergraduate programmes does not allow young construction professionals to get these management skills at this level of studies. However, present requirements of project management expertise in the free European construction market call for the involvement of higher education institutions of both countries to answer industry demands in this field of knowledge. This paper reports the main objectives and findings of a survey conducted in the scope a Leonardo da Vinci project on the Polish education system requirements for technical and managerial skills of construction professionals.

The results of several latest and related stormwater research projects that focused on the treatability of stormwater heavy metals were presented. Results indicated that the heavy metals of concern remain strongly bound to the particulates during long exposures at the extreme pH conditions likely to occur in receiving water sediments. The heavy metals also likely remain strongly bound to the particulates in stormwater control device sumps or detention pond sediments where particulate-bound metals are captured. It was found that the heavy metals can likely remain strongly associated with a variety of organic and inorganic media under varying Eh conditions.
