Manggarai Gate is one of the most important flood control structures of the Jakarta Flood Control System. Its performance capacity is a compulsory parameter for flood risk reduction of the Jakarta Flood Prone Area. This paper aims to evaluate the contribution of the capacity improvement of Manggarai Gate to reduce the flood hazard at Manggarai flood-prone areas located in the upper part of this gate. An additional gate section was conducted in 2015 as the structural flood hazard reduction effort to increase the capacity of this gate from 330 m3/s to 507 m3/s. Recorded floods characteristic event before and after this improvement was compared to determine the flood hazard changes during the flood observation period. Based on this determination results it is found that the contribution of the increment capacity of Manggarai gates in reducing the flood hazard depends on the sustainability of the river capacity, river water quality, and flood control operation. It could also be concluded the sustainability of the river capacity and river water quality is very sensitive to the social behavior of the community and the river stakeholder along the river catchment area in addressing the environmental condition of the river catchment area. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Marine pollution by various debris is rising in the context of increasing urbanization, industrialization and worldwide trade. Here, we review marine macro-litter with focus on sources, abundance, distribution, and impact on aquatic wildlife, human health, and the economy. We observe that about 75–80% of marine litter originates from land-based sources, including poorly managed landfills and improper disposal. Macro-litter ingestion by marine life is of growing concern, in particular concerning the presence of plastics and associated pollutants, e.g., bisphenol A and phthalates, in fishes. These pollutants are accumulated and transferred to human via seafood. Marine plastic pollution induces a substantial rise of economic costs due to the decline of ecosystem services. Mitigation of marine plastic pollution should be done by following the ten Rs principles of refuse, rethink, reduce, re-use, repair, refurbish, remanufacture, repurpose, recycle, and recover. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

Recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) is widely used as an alternative recycled material in engineering, while para-wood ash (PWA) is a natural agricultural waste product. To advance sustainable construction, it is crucial to thoroughly examine their impact on concrete’s mechanical properties to ensure safety in engineering applications. This paper conducts a series of experiments on recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) with PWA to investigate these replacement effects. RCA replaces natural coarse aggregate (NCA) at 0%, 50%, and 100%, while PWA substitutes cement at 0%, 10%, and 20%. The experiments include compression tests on mortar as well as compressive, tensile, and flexural tests on RAC, along with microstructure investigations. The results indicate a decrease in strength with higher proportions of RCA and PWA. Microstructure investigations were conducted via scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM/EDX). SEM provides micro images of the testing specimens, while EDX offers insight into their chemical compositions. The EDX results reveal a direct correlation between the Ca/Si ratio and the strengths of mortar and RAC. Correlation studies between compressive strength-replacement parameters, tensile-compressive strength, and flexural-compressive strength demonstrate that the proposed equations accurately predict the experimental data with R2 values of 0.60 (for mortar), and 0.94, 0.95, and 0.71 (for RAC), respectively. Two numerical simulations validate the proposed model and showcase potential engineering applications. Finally, a 10% replacement of PWA for cement can reduce the embodied energy value (EEV) by approximately 9.46% for mortar mixed with PWA and around 10% for RAC mixed with RCA and PWA. © 2024, The Authors. The current study aims to develop a holistic hydrodynamic flood modelling framework for the Mithi catchment of Mumbai city, India, which is subjected to flooding almost every year causing huge losses and inconvenience. A one-dimensional flood model (MIKE 11) which accounts for the river discharge along with stormwater drainage discharge is coupled with a two-dimensional flood model (MIKE 21) which simulates the overland flow in the MIKE FLOOD platform along with the major flood influencers such as rainfall and tidal elevation to develop a three-way coupled flood modelling framework. The flood parameters obtained from this framework are translated into flood inundation maps which account for flood depth and flood hazard maps which account for flood depth along with spatial velocity and can help to identify the potential areas at risk. However, hydrodynamic flood modelling is highly data-intensive and requires good resolution meteorological, hydraulic, and topographical data sets. Therefore, the unavailability of long-term and reliable data sets in developing and underdeveloping countries cause a major hindrance for modelling in such catchments. The current study also adapts alternate robust methods to address the challenge of data scarcity of rainfall, discharge, tidal elevation, and drainage network. The Application of Artificial Neural Network Model to Predicting the Acid Mine Drainage from Long-Term Lab Scale Kinetic Test

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is one of the common environmental problems in the coal mining industry that was formed by the oxidation of sulfide minerals in the overburden or waste rock. The prediction of acid generation through AMD is important to do in overburden management and planning the post-mining land use. One of the methods used to predict AMD is a lab-scale kinetic test to determine the rate of acid formation over time using representative samples in the field. However, this test requires a long-time procedure and large amount of chemical reagents lead to inefficient cost. On the other hand, there is potential for machine learning to learn the pattern behind the lab-scale kinetic test data. This study describes an approach to use artificial neural network (ANN) modeling to predict the result from lab-scale kinetic tests. Various ANN model is used based on 83 weeks experiments of lab-scale kinetic tests with 100% potential acid-forming rock. The model approaches the monitoring of pH, ORP, conductivity, TDS, sulfate, and heavy metals (Fe and Mn). The overall Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) obtained in this study was 0.99 on training and validation data, indicating a strong correlation and accurate prediction compared to the actual lab-scale kinetic tests data. This show the ANN ability to learn patterns, trends, and seasonality from past data for accurate forecasting, thereby highlighting its significant contribution to solving AMD problems. This research is also expected to establish the foundation for a new approach to predict AMD, with time efficient, accurate, and cost-effectiveness in future applications. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

Nowadays, in order to decrease environmental impacts such as exhaustion of natural resources and CO2 discharge, the partial replacement of cement by fly ash and coarse aggregate by crushed fine aggregate in concrete have been attracted many researchers. This study concentrated on an experimental examination of the mechanical properties of fine-grained concrete using fine-red sand placement for crushed sand. Experimental tests were performed to investigate compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strength. The results reveal that the compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strength increased with curing time for all mixtures. The increase in the amount of fine-red sand replacement caused a decrease in all mixtures. It was also found that there is a strong correlation between compressive and splitting tensile strength with a high coefficient of determination. Besides, the results of compressive, splitting tensile, and flexural strength satisfied the requirement of concrete used for pavement. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Advancing the monitoring of seasonal snow, a natural reservoir of fresh water, is crucial for hydrological and climatological research. The utilization of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems for this purpose has gained prominence due to its improved capabilities and advantages over alternative methods. The study aims to improve snow depth estimation in the Western Himalayas by taking into account the influence of other variables on the relationship between Sentinel-1 C-band backscatter and snow depth. For this purpose, a preliminary study is done using random forest machine learning algorithm. The model parameters are optimized through grid search and cross-validation on temporally independent folds of data and evaluated on spatially independent data, revealing the model's capability to estimate snow depth with an RMSE of 89.34 cm and MAE of 67.56 cm. The study highlights the potential for improving snow depth estimates, particularly for deeper snowpacks, through the analysis and inclusion of variables that influence snowpack properties in complex topography.

Mixotrophic Chlorella pyrenoidosa biofilm with enhanced biomass production, microalgal activity, and nutrient removal from nutrient-rich wastewater

Microalgae possess significant advantages in nitrogen and phosphorus removal from nutrient-rich wastewater that are highly efficient and independent of the C/N ratio. However, challenges such as low biomass productivity, high variability in nutrient removal under different trophic types, and difficulty in harvesting biomass limits the large-scale application of microalgae wastewater treatment. This study attempted to employ mixotrophic microalgae biofilm to address these issues. The biomass production, microalgal activity, and nutrient removal of Chlorella pyrenoidosa biofilms with different trophic types were compared for nutrient-rich wastewater treatment. The results showed that the biomass productivity of the mixotrophic microalgal biofilm (0.215 g/(L·d)) was 2.3, 8.6, and 6.0 times higher than that of photoautotrophic microalgal biofilm, heterotrophic microalgal biofilm, and photoautotrophic suspended microalga, respectively. Additionally, the dehydrogenase activity (DHA), indicating microalgal activity, of the mixotrophic biofilm was 2.3 and 16.5 times higher than that of photoautotrophic and heterotrophic biofilms, respectively. Meanwhile, the mixotrophic biofilm removed 96.0 % of NH4+-N and 99.2 % of PO43–-P, more efficient than that with other types of biofilms and suspended microalgae. In an open-ended air-lift photobioreactor, the mixotrophic microalgal biofilm produced biomass at 0.12 g/(L·d) and removed 90.0 % of NH4+-N and 97.6 % of PO43–-P. This study suggests that the mixotrophic microalgal biofilm shows promise in treating nutrient-rich wastewater and producing microalgal biomass for value-added products. © 2024

Plasticrusts manifest as a coating on intertidal rocks due to environmental exposure. They refer to crushed plastic debris that blankets rocks found along intertidal shorelines. This study significantly contributes to a better understanding of the occurrence of these novel plastic formations, shedding light on their potential pathways of formation during the Anthropocene era. The research provides comprehensive insights into the composition, origins, challenges, and effective management strategies for removing coastal plastic litter. The findings of this investigation offer valuable evidence regarding the formation and impact of these recently discovered plastic items in coastal regions, prompting discussions about their formation processes and their effects on the marine ecosystem. Recognizing that these newly emerged plastic litter pose a considerable threat to the marine environment is crucial. With their emergence, we face an environmental challenge, especially concerning the health of coastal ecosystems. Plasticrusts, when degraded, can release microplastics (MPs) and nanoparticles (NPs) into the surrounding environment. These micro- and nano-sized plastic particles pose significant ecological risks as they persist in ecosystems, potentially harming wildlife and entering the food chain, causing widespread environmental contamination. Significantly, it outlines strategies to minimize the impact of this emerging plastic debris and its source. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
