The Architecture, engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry will benefit significantly from integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Extended Reality (XR) technologies. This paper explores the immense potential of AI-enhanced XR in tackling the industry challenges. While AI and XR are currently employed independently, this paper proposes a framework for their integration, aiming to optimize resource allocation, elevate safety protocols, and enhance project accuracy. Supported by a SWOT analysis, the study presents practical implications and proposed use cases showcasing the application of AI and XR in AEC projects. The paper provides a strategic roadmap for integrating AI-driven XR, emphasizing its potential to drive immediate and sustainable advancements in construction practices and set new industry benchmarks for innovation and efficiency. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

When confronted with unforeseen challenges, practicing informed decision making is crucial for enhancing resilience in the built environment. While scan-to-building information modeling (BIM) is a well-established approach for creating detailed digital representations of physical assets, its application in assessing and improving infrastructure resilience remains underexplored. This study addresses this gap by proposing a novel application of scan-to-BIM, namely, scan-to-BIM-to-digital twin (S-BIM-DT) workflow. By integrating reality capture and digital twin technologies, this workflow creates continuously updated and accurate digital representations of physical assets, enabling the generation of various scenarios. Unlike traditional methods, the S-BIM-DT workflow facilitates continuous model refinement, supporting informed resilience strategies. By combining these technologies into a cohesive process, the workflow facilitates decision making under uncertainty, enabling stakeholders to evaluate and respond to various scenarios effectively. We demonstrate the implementation of the S-BIM-DT workflow through two use cases that highlight its capability to enhance resilience at different scales. The first use case involves the Combined Transportation, Emergency, and Communications Center (CTECC) in Austin, Texas. BIM-enriched computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling simulates airflow and develops alternative scenarios for optimizing the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. This approach enhances resilience against airborne health threats in a postCOVID context. The second use case focuses on designated areas within Beaumont, Texas, as part of the Southeast Texas Urban Integrated Field Laboratory (SETx-UIFL) research. By developing inundation maps to assess extreme weather events, this modeling aids in preparedness efforts and informs the development of climate-resilient infrastructure in vulnerable neighborhoods. In this experiment, we study the scale free network property of an organizational communication network. We used social network analysis methods during organizational crisis period that captures the dynamics of communication networks. We did not find any significant fluctuation between the actor prominence in daily and aggregated networks. We found that email communication network displays a high degree of scale free behavior described by power law.

A multiobjective optimization model for project selection with probabilistic considerations

When faced with limited resources, project managers must determine which projects to fund at what levels from a pool of potential ones. This problem of project selection is inherently multiobjective since various factors, such as the available budget, the chance of success, and the efficient allocation of the project team, must be considered simultaneously. The uncertainty of the data at the time decisions are made further complicates project selection. In this paper, a multiobjective, integer-constrained optimization model with competing objectives for project selection is formulated using probability distributions to describe costs. The objectives correspond to important project criteria, such as: rank (value), managerial labor needed, and average cost. The subjective rank is determined via the Analytic Hierarchy Process. The model is applied to a data set from a US government agency that involves 84 separate projects. The results indicate improved budgetary efficiency compared to the actual project selection, thus supporting use of the model for public sector project selection. The model is unique since it integrates multiobjective optimization, Monte Carlo simulation, and the Analytic Hierarchy Process. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Clustering is an unsupervised learning method that provides insights by investigating unknown structures in a dataset without exploiting any ground truth target information. For constructing an as-built Building Information Models (BIM) from captured laser-scanned datasets, the segmentation process precedes modeling, which provides a baseline to be traced for obtaining 3D models from point clouds. For the segmentation process, a clustering algorithm can be effectively applied so that it can group the points having similar features without predefined criteria which, in turn, segments can be easily separated from the entire scene. Amongst various types of clustering algorithms, Hierarchical Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (HDBSCAN) was developed as a density-based and hierarchical clustering algorithm which provides a simplified tree of significant clusters. This algorithm has several distinct advantages over other clustering algorithms: (1) avoids "flat" (i.e. non-hierarchical) labeling of data objects, (2) automatically simplifies the hierarchy into the most significant clusters, and (3) requires a single input parameter (i.e. minimum number of points) for density threshold. However, this algorithm has an overall computation time complexity represented as a quadratic form (i.e., O (dn2) ) which suffers from the computational efficiency issue especially for massive amounts of data such as those found in 3D point clouds. To ease the applicability of HDBSCAN to Scan-to-BIM applications, this research aims to parallelize major time-consuming components of HDBSCAN algorithm. OpenMP interface was adopted for thread parallelization and parallel efficiency was measured by calculating speedup and efficiency from strong and weak scaling results. © 2023, Canadian Society for civil engineering.

In the last few years, the application of VR has exponentially grown to give visually large field-of-view from planning to execution stages of any types of civil infrastructure systems. Handling the complexity and uncertainty of construction projects, however, requires well-prepared architects and engineers. Architecture and civil engineering students are also expected to go through the proper training to be well-equipped for this challenge. VR has proved a helpful tool for architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) education environments with the aim to leave a lasting impact on a student's learning and experience. The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief review of the most recent VR systems in the design and construction industry and the education environment. The paper also evaluates the use of VR in a two-pronged approach by conducting a comprehensive literature review and interviewing students in the master of project management (MPM) program. This paper could provide a roadmap for future efforts to implement VR into the architectural and construction industry as well as the education environment. © 2019 American Society of civil Engineers.

The Japanese concept 'poka yoke', translated into English as 'mistake proofing,' has been mentioned at previous IGLC conferences. This notwithstanding, mistake proofing appears to not have been (nor be) systematically researched or practiced in the lean construction community. To raise awareness of opportunities provided by thinking with mistake proofing in mind as a means to build quality into project delivery, this paper summarizes the philosophy that underlies mistake proofing. Examples illustrate how mistake proofing applies to the work done within one specialty trade, how manufacturers and fabricators can design their products so they cannot be constructed defectively, and how architects and engineers may conceive of system designs that are less likely to fail during construction or in a product's life cycle. Given that a construction site is both temporary and unique, the outcome of every construction project is dependent on having all of the proper resources delivered to the site at the appropriate time. Although construction supply chains, logistics, and materials management systems have been scrutinized in recent years, the full range of potential late deliverables has not yet been investigated. Further, the true effects of these late deliverables are much more far-reaching and less understood. This paper, part of a larger research project being developed by the Construction Industry Institute Research Team 300, describes the process followed to list and categorize common late deliverables to industrial construction sites using team knowledge, expert interviews, industry surveys, and indepth case studies, as well as a review of the existing literature on the topic. This information will serve as a starting point for an investigation into how these late deliverables affect the cost, schedule, quality, and safety performance of construction projects along with the effects on the organizations involved. The enumeration and classification of these project effects incorporating the perspectives of both owners and contractors, are also described in this paper. © 2014 American Society of civil Engineers.

Current estimates indicate an illegal immigrant population of over 11 million residing in the United States;an estimated 19% of this total works in the construction industry. There are several draft bills currently making their way through the US federal legislative process. All of them tighten immigration rules and enforcement, which will ultimately affect the available immigrant workforce. Enforcement of current law will no doubt have a measurable impact on the availability of illegal immigrant workers. Amnesty or some version of a "guest-worker" program would also have a significant impact on the immigrant workforce. Regardless of the scope and breadth of immigration reform, there will be a considerable impact on labour resources for the construction industry. The research will analyse the current hiring practices of immigrants within the construction industry and predict the effects of impending immigration reform on industry economics. Initial predictions of the direction of immigration reform indicate that labour shortages are unlikely;however, increased labour costs are likely due to a prevailing wage provision in the proposed law. Increased costs of around 1% are predicted for projects in the DC metro region.

Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste is unavoidable in any society and is common to the Alberta construction industry as well. C&D waste comprises of bulky materials such as wood, bricks, drywalls, plastics, etc. having slow degradation rates consuming a lot of landfill space. The management of C&D waste has become a huge issue, since almost all of the C&D waste is disposed in landfills which are having limited capacity. Therefore it is a growing concern for planners, municipalities, governments, and environmental organizations that needs to be addressed promptly. This paper reviews currently available C&D waste management tools and practices particularly focusing on Alberta construction industry. It is intended to identify the limitations of currently available tools/models and to provide guidance/suggestions for future research activities. Involvement of all the stakeholders in the process of accomplishing the goals of C&D waste management is also emphasized.
