This study attempted to investigate the removal of biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), ammonia-nitrogen (NH4-N), and total phosphorus (TP) from secondary treated domestic wastewater using algal photo-bioreactor. A semi-pilot plant was constructed and operated for 112 days under continuous flow conditions at Zenin wastewater treatment plant, Giza, Egypt (WWTP) which consists of an algal photo-bioreactor with an effective volume of 188 litters and a lamella settler. The removal of the studied parameters was studied at different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) and mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentrations. A continuous illumination of the photo-bioreactor was maintained using sunlight in the morning and incandescent lamps at night. The best overall organic and nutrients removal efficiency was recorded at HRT of 16.1 hours. Artificial neural network (ANN) with a structure of 3-10-1 was used to predict the BOD, COD, TSS, NH4-N, and TP removal efficiencies. It was revealed that the ANN model adequately predicted the studied parameters removal efficiencies with r2 greater than 90%. © 2019 American Institute of Chemical Engineers. All rights reserved.

Considering the significant thermal influence green spaces have on built environments, this paper aims to present the results of a data-driven analysis to identify statistically significant spatiotemporal trends of green heat losses and surface temperature increases in the urban area of a small municipality. The Brazilian municipality of Feliz was selected for the case study. Landsat-5, Landsat-7, and Landsat-8 images were used to identify Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) cold spots and Land Surface Temperature (LST) hot spots. A data mining tool was employed to identify emerging physical patterns, making it possible to highlight areas where increases in temperature might be associated with specific characteristics of built environments. The urban area presents a particular dynamic, where specific persistent LST hot spots can be associated with historical or diminishing NDVI cold spots. Additionally, LST hot spots, which contribute towards the formation of new urban heat islands were found to correspond to 10% of the detectable emerging patterns in the urban areas. It is expected that the present spatial analysis, by highlighting priority areas for intervention, could provide information to decision-makers and urban planners that would assist in the reorientation of urban occupation, thus contributing to more sustainable and efficient urban planning. © 2022, The Authors. The effect of using asbuton with used waste diesel oil on the stability of the porus asphalt mix with hot mix cold laid method

The abundant availability of Asbuton in Indonesia should be proportional to the percentage of its use, however, in the implementation of pavement works, it is still dominated by petroleum asphalt, the price of which tends to be higher than the Asbuton. If you look at the elements in Asbuton, namely minerals and bitumen, it should be superior to petroleum asphalt. One of the factors where the use of Asbuton is not optimal is that the stability value of the mixture using Asbuton is still low compared to the mixture using petroleum asphalt. So this research aims to analyze the stability value of the porous asphalt mixture using Asbuton and waste oil as a rejuvenating agent with hot mix cold laid method. The research method was carried out by carrying out test objects with variations in Asbuton content of 5%, 5.5% and 6% with variations in fuel wastage rate of 0%, 2%, 3% and 4%. The total number of test objects is 36 samples. Then the Marshall test was tested to determine its stability value. The results obtained based on the test results are the highest average stability value at the variation of the levels of Asbuton 6%, 5.5% and 5% respectively 1295.3 Kg with 4% waste oil content; 1238 Kg with 3% used oil; and 773 kg with a waste oil content of 2%. Adding the Asbuton content increases the stability value; however, the level of used oil in the best results still varies. It can therefore be concluded that the highest stability value of a hollow asphalt mixture using an Asbuton content of 6% and a waste oil content of 4% with a value of 1295.3 Kg, meets the specification of the Road engineering Association of Malaysia (REAM).

This paper introduces three case-based modules for teaching civil engineering students about decision making for sustainability. The purpose of these modules is to connect civil engineering design to recent advances in behavioral decision science. Students who recognize their own decision biases will be better able to manage their decisions and be better able to recognize how their designs influence stakeholder decisions in the future. The three case studies varied in design topic and behavioral decision science concepts, from land development (choice overload) to renewable energy (status quo bias) to wastewater infrastructure (risk aversion). The case-based modules were developed using structured interviews with engineering design teams from each of the case projects. Relevant concepts from behavioral decision science were identified while interviewing the engineering design teams. The developed modules were tested with over 280 undergraduate engineering students. Methods to evaluate learning include pre and post-module surveys and free-response questions. After the module, students were more likely to mention and articulate the role that humans' mental barriers, like choice overload, bounded rationality, and satisficing play in decision making for sustainability. They also recognized how tools like Envision can help reduce these cognitive biases. In addition to integrating diverse topics and disciplines into a unified and relevant teaching module, the intention is that other faculty can also use these cases. Slides (either one or two-day instruction), teaching notes, and grading rubrics are available for other instructors to download and use and can be found in the Center for Sustainable engineering repository. © American Society for engineering Education, 2018.

Potential impact of climate change on water resources availability in Bantaeng District, South Sulawesi Province

As a result of climate change, the condition of the rain pattern will be more extreme, where in the rainy season, the rainfall will be higher so that it can trigger more floods and landslides; while in the dry season, the rainfall will be less added by increasing evaporation due to increased temperatures which can trigger drought disasters. The objective of this research was to what extent the impact of climate change on water availability which will be used as the main raw material for Municipal Water in Bantaeng Regency. The research method was descriptive qualitative with cross sectional approach. The results of climate change projections showed that the potential monthly average surface water discharge in Bantaeng Regency, especially the watershed used by PDAM, changed fluctuatively. During the rainy season, the projected run-off discharge increased by around 15%; while during the dry season it decreased by around 13% in the Nipa-Nipa, Gusung, and Kaili Watershed. This indicated that the vulnerability of surface water resources during the peak of the dry season (August) to the watershed with Municipal Water intakes, however, in general, the availability of surface water resources in the three watersheds was relatively safe as indicated by the projection results of the run-off discharge average annual rate increased by 4%

Concrete is a construction material that is extensively used to build various infrastructures. The increasing of basic human facilities and the resulting infrastructures in increasing needs of concrete and cement concrete as the material forming. Many problems in the concrete producing industry are not sustainable. Because of concrete production uses enormous natural resources and the main binding material in concrete is cement. Cement is the result of calcination of lime roomates in the process results in the release of carbon dioxide (CO2). To mitigate this problem and for sustainability concrete, many researches have been done to find a replacement for cement. Geopolymer concrete is an alternative to reduce part of cement. Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBFS) that consist of silica and alumina can be used as a binder to replace part of the Portland Composite Cement (PCC). In this study, concrete compressive strength tests were carried out on 48 specimens of concrete cylinder 15x30 cm. The ratio of substitution GGBFS/PCC used were 0/100, 40/60, 50/50 and 60/40. The specimens were cured at room temperature then tested at the age of 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. The results show that the average compressive strength of concrete at the age of 28 days that GGBFS/PCC ratio of 0/100, 40/60, 50/50 and 60/40 were 26.50, 23.01, 26.65 and 22.56 MPa, respectively. Based on the analysis, 50% substitution of GGBFS can be used to partially replace cement because has the same as normal compressive strength of concrete and can be classified as environmentally friendly or green concrete.

The Study of Sedimentation at Jongkong Reservoir in District Central of Bangka through Erosion of Catchment Area

Jongkong reservoir creates a reservoir of water that is used for the purposes of raw water as fundamental media for improvement of drinking water production especially at dry season for the District of Koba. The advantage of being able to hold water in wet season and releasing it in dry season will be detained if the life storage of the reservoir can be utilized effectively, but sedimentation problem will decrease its volume which can influence the life time of reservoir. Finally the reservoir becomes less effective, so it is very important to study. The method which is used to predict an average erosion rate in the catchment area considers factors of rain erosivity, soil erodibility, ground inclination of slope or slope length, management of crop and land, soil conservation. Calculation was done by using the USLE equation (Universal Soil Loss Equation) which was developed by Wischmeier and Smith (1965, 1978). From this research result, the prediction of surface erosion rate in the basin catchment area in the year 2019 is equal to 53.20 mm/year or equivalent with 62,491.92 m3/year, and the value of Sediment Delivery Ratio (SDR) is equal to 32,28 %. The number of material which eroded is equal to 957.59 Ton/Ha/year so it is classified into the medium erosion class category. The dead storage of 5% of the the volume of the reservoir cage will be fully charged in the year 2022 or for 3 The next year and the total volume of the reservoir Ridge will be full of sediment in the year 2062 or 43 years.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as antimicrobial agents have gained extensive popularity due to their broad-spectrum action. Recently, AgNPs have been combined with photosensitizers (PS) to develop a synergistic antimicrobial effect. This synergy is associated with the light-activated increase in the release of Ag, which drives the antibacterial mechanism against antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB). A factor typically not considered in the performance of AgNPs is the environmental conditions, such as salt and protein content, that significantly impact their bactericidal effect. In this work, we used protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) as a PS to synthesize PpIX-AgNPs. We elucidated the critical role of environmental conditions on the colloidal stability of PpIX-AgNPs in different bacterial culture media. We also determined the impact of the culture media on the light-activated release kinetics of Ag. We found that cell media with lower protein and higher salt content drive the colloidal stability and release kinetics of Ag from AgNPs. Furthermore, we have shown that the multiple-irradiation approach of this light-controlled platform maximizes the release of Ag and promotes effective antibacterial action. We successfully tested this multiple-irradiation strategy in methicillin-resistant (MRSA) demonstrating ∼7-log-unit reduction at 1.5 μg mL of PpIX-AgNP. A 6-log-unit MRSA inhibition was achieved in the nutrient broth (NB) media under the same irradiation strategy. We envision that this light-activated PpIX-AgNPs system can overcome major issues with the elimination of ARB and reduce side effects.
