Identification of T – pier construction work activities on the elevated railway project to develop work breakdown structure

The development of elevated railway infrastructures in Indonesia is going rapidly. The uniqueness of the T-Pier construction in the elevated railway project is the construction method that causes many activities to execute. The explained activities in the construction method were not clear, neither treated in much detail. In line with the problem, this research aim is to identify T-Piers construction work activities specifically. The project sample was MRT Jakarta CP 103 elevated section and T-Pier construction was the object of the case study. The first stage of this research was archive analysis, expert validation, and surveying of 100 bridge engineers. The collected data were analyzed by the descriptive analysis method. Then the work breakdown structure tree diagram was developed and shown the activities development. There were 31 activities identified starting from preparation until finishing and grouped into the main section group of activities i.e. pile cap, pier column, installation, and dismantling of temporary shoring, and pier head group activities. All the experts agreed that the activities identified were valid and almost all respondents 100% agree. The activities identified were at level 5 in the work breakdown structure development. The detailed activities can be standardized as a reference in future similar projects.

Early detection and repair of airfield pavement distresses are essential aspects of preserving airport pavements for the full spans of their design periods and maintaining their structural integrity, ride quality, and safety. In recent years, various studies have been conducted for pavement distress detection and mapping using alternate data collection methodologies, including small uncrewed aerial systems (sUAS). This study evaluates the usefulness of red-green-blue (RGB) orthophoto and digital elevation models (DEMs) generated from sUAS data in detecting various airfield Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement distress. Fourteen airfield PCC pavement distresses with different severities were studied using RGB orthophotos with resolutions ranging from 0.8 mm/pixel to 21 mm/pixel and DEM resolutions ranging from 3.0 mm/pixel to 84 mm/pixel. The analysis showed that the RGB optical orthophotos and DEM were useful for detecting 13 out of 14 PCC pavement distresses and confirmation of the location of 11 out of 14 distresses, respectively. © ASCE. Indonesia is active in infrastructure development, especially the railway infrastructure. Currently, there are a lot of elevated railway construction projects and there are many construction accidents in elevated construction. Different construction methods in elevated construction lead to different safety risks. Therefore, it is necessary to identify safety risks, especially high risks. The main objective of this research is to identify high safety risks in box girder construction on elevated railway projects. This research was designed in 3 main stages, starting from risk identification, expert validation, and risk assessment survey. The main variable is the safety risk in box girder construction with launching gantry, heavy shoring, and cast in situ method. The project reviewed is the Double Track (DDT) Railway Project in Jakarta. The result of the analysis shows that there were some high safety risks in box girder construction with launching gantry method, heavy shoring method, and cast in situ method i.e. traffic accident, hit by heavy equipment, fall from a height, struck down by material, wire hanger broke, formwork collapse, heavy shoring collapse, heavy equipment overturned and collapsed and struck down by box girder. The result of this research can be a determinant in the development of good construction safety planning for the next elevated railway project.

Effect of frequency content of ground motion on seismic response of buildings with variable aspect ratio including soil-structure interaction

Soil-structure interaction (SSI) may lead to reduction, amplification or negligible change in structural responses depending on the relationship between the nature of excitations and subsoil conditions. Since neglecting SSI effects may cause uncertainties in seismic design, it is crucial to consider them during the design process. Another important factor affecting the dynamic behavior of structures interacting with the ground is the dynamic properties of the structures. To consider this effect, three buildings with 4, 8, and 12 stories designed in accordance with the Turkish Building Earthquake Code (TBEC-2018) are analyzed. The aspect ratios of these structures are 2, 4, and 6, corresponding to squat, ordinary, and slender structures, respectively. The primary objective of this study is to simulate the combined effects of these key parameters on the dynamic response of reinforced concrete structures. In the time history analyses, six ground motions classified by three different frequency contents are considered. 3D finite element models of SSI systems are established using ANSYS software. The usability of the numerical models is demonstrated for both SSI and fixed-base cases through three different analytical approaches. The displacement, acceleration, and stress responses are examined through time history analyses. The results indicate that the SSI is not negligible and neglecting the SSI is an oversimplification that does not lead to always-conservative predictions. Moreover, both the frequency content of the excitation and the structural aspect ratio are found to be decisive parameters in seismic response.

Inner City communities have traditionally been overlooked and often forgotten in the satellite and ground-based remote sensing revolution. For too long, undergraduate minority students from these communities have been marginalized, ostracized, and unprepared to participate in the plethora of remote sensing applications that yet remain new, foreign, and mysterious. Even basic understanding of the amazing tool of remote sensing is unknown to them. These students lack the exposure, the awareness, the understanding, and the engagement in the foray of remote sensing and the unique lens it provides to probe and unearth new ways of gaining knowledge about the environment. To adequately prepare inner-city students to become members of the next generation of geoscientists, to empower and sustain underserved neighborhoods, and to assist in replenishing the geoscience workforce, unique paradigms of teaching and learning about remote sensing are *** the Center for Remote Sensing and Earth System Sciences (ReSESS) at the New York City College of technology (City Tech), remote sensing is being used as a catalyst to attract and to engage students from underserved communities in studying urban climate within their local neighborhoods. Results indicate that this approach of using remote sensing to attract students to urban climate increased awareness and understanding in the geosciences, and it motivated students to share their newfound knowledge in environmental sustainability initiatives with their fellow local citizens.

Profenofos is a widely used organophophorous pesticide for several crops and is detected in drinking water sources. This study investigated the degradation of profenofos using vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) compared with ultraviolet (UV). The factors affecting the degradation performance including pH, profenofos concentration, bicarbonate, nitrate, nitrite, natural organic matter (NOM), and aeration were examined. Profenofos removal efficiencies were 84% and 52% by VUV and UV after 7 min of irradiation, respectively (Initial profenofos concentration of 2 mg/L). Degradation of profenofos by VUV were 3 times faster than UV. The degradation rates decreased with increasing initial profenofos concentration. Direct photolysis at 185 nm and OH • played major roles for profenofos removal by VUV. Aeration enhanced the profenofos degradation and mineralization by VUV but not UV. Bicarbonate inhibited the profenofos degradation while nitrate (≤50 mg-NO 3 - /L) acted as a photosensitizer enhancing profenofos degradation. NOM from groundwater and surface water sources also inhibited the profenofos removal by VUV as high as 39% compared to deionized water. However, NOM promoted the profenofos removal by UV because degradation by OH • formed via NOM photolysis became the main degradation mechanism. The result of profenofos degradation under isolated NOM fractions elucidated that hydrophobic fractions had less inhibition compared to hydrophilic fractions. Identified products suggested the pathway of profenofos photodegradation were the breaking of the O-P bond and reduction of Br. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Among various natural hazards, those induced by hydrological and meteorological factors have emerged as the most frequent and damaging. India is at the second from the top, after Bangladesh, of flood hazard-affected countries of the world, causing immense damage to life and property every year. The Middle Ganga Plain in the country is one of the most severely affected regions due to the convergence of Himalayan rivers in the Ganga (Ganges) plain. This study focuses on optimizing novel ensemble models to enhance the mapping of flood hazard susceptibility in specific topoclimatic setting, characterized by a low-altitude-range, sub-tropical monsoonal climate, and a riverine floodplain environment of the tectonically active Middle Ganga Plain. This region forms part of the Ganga Foreland Basin prone to frequent floods. We employ a comprehensive flood inventory and twelve selected flood conditioning factors and is the first study that has developed these ensemble models in low relief riverine floodplain environmental setting with high resolution geomorphology as one of the conditioning factors. Four artificial intelligence ensemble models were employed in this work: Logistic Regression-Evidential Belief Function (LR-EBF), Logistic Regression-Frequency Ratio (LR-FR), Multi-Layer Perceptron-Evidential Belief Function (MLP-EBF), and Multi-Layer Perceptron-Frequency Ratio (MLP-FR). Results showed that LR-based ensembles outperformed MLP-based ensembles in the studied topoclimatic setting, with LR-EBF model achieving 87.2% and 84.7% success and prediction rates respectively. Our results reveal consistent performance differences between LR-based ensembles with FR and EBF models across different environmental settings. MLP-based ensembles, particularly with Frequency Ratio, displayed more significant performance variations.
