Undergraduate students were exposed to hands-on novel desalination laboratory experiments in an attempt to generate interest towards research in the broad field of environmental engineering and specifically in the field of water desalination. The laboratory exercises were designed to introduce desalination techniques, enhance their learning experiences, generate interest among them, and prepare them as potential researchers in laboratory settings. The hands-on experience of capacitive deionization (CDI) based laboratory experiments provided foundational and working knowledge of the CDI concept and allowed students to learn basic methodology followed in environmental laboratories to arrive at technical conclusions. Students were given opportunity to desalinate water solutions using commercially available carbon aerogel fiber/paper electrodes at various conditions. Different parameters such as applied voltage, ambient temperature, initial concentration, flow rate, ion radius were varied and effects on desalination performance were observed. The teams were assigned one of these variables and asked to explore the effect its variation on desalination in using a semi-batch mode CDI experiment set up. Students used conductivity meters to develop salinity vs conductivity calibration curves for a given salt type. Each team was asked to prepare and use their calibration curve to measure the salinity levels of 2 to 3 solutions of unknown salinity of the same salt. Each team was asked to adopt a basic CDI reactor and were provided with basic material, equipment and supplies and guidelines for the project. A salt solution was pumped through the reactors in a continuously re-cycled (multi-pass) mode. The conductivity was measured in a reservoir. Students were asked to do mass-balance calculations on total quantity of the salt removed using initial and final concentrations, and the volumes of the solutions used in their experiments. There are so many areas in Indonesia that are prone to landslides. Bogor is the regency with the most frequent landslides. Therefore, high community preparedness is needed to deal with the landslide, especially at the household level because it is the spearhead of preparedness and influence disaster risk. The objective of this research is to measure and analyze the level of household preparedness for facing landslide. The location of this research is in Cibadak Village, Bogor regency where a landslide disaster had happened. This is a quantitative research. The number of the samples were 100 household. Data collection was done by surveying samples and distributing questionnaires. The data would be analyzed with descriptive analysis, and the results of level of household preparedness would be categorized to five levels which were very prepared (80-100), prepared (65-79), almost prepared (55-64), less prepared (40-54), and not prepared (0-39). The results of the research are the average index value of Knowledge and Attitude (KA) parameter is 66.77, Emergency Planning (EP) parameter is 52.24, Warning System (WS) parameter is 64.80, Resources Mobilization Capacity (RMC) parameter is 51.25 and the level of household preparedness for facing landslide is 59.26 or and it is significant at the almost prepared level.

Buildings consume 42.6% of the electricity generated in Brazil, and the residential sector is responsible for 21,4% of that amount, in other words, almost a quarter of the generated electricity. Add to this fact, the housing deficit was almost 6 million in 2019 in the country. The purpose of this article is to analyze the results of the heating and cooling demand of a social residential building designed in an H shape, in Passo Fundo, in southern Brazil, from the perspective of the thermal transmittance limitation of the Brazilian normative (NBR 15575) and the Spanish Technical Code (CTE). The main objective is to verify and analyze the existing differences and potentials in the comparison between the regulations, evaluating the thermal envelope of a typical social housing building. The method used to obtain results was a computer simulation, using EnergyPlus software as an energy calculation engine and Sketchup 2017 for the modeling, with the Euclid plugin, which directly sends data to the energy simulation program. The building was simulated with climate data from the city of Passo Fundo, belonging to the Brazilian Bioclimatic Zone 2 (BZ2), and was compared to the transmittance level required for the D1 climate of Spain, as required by the CTE. Finally, it is possible to evidence that there is a decrease in the building’s energy demand as thermal insulation is incorporated into the walls and roof, to reach the strictest standard requirement levels. This article intends to show the potential for improvement in Brazilian regulations and the path to be followed concerning energy improvement in buildings.

One of the main skills of engineers is to be able to solve problems. It is generally recognized that real-world engineering problems are inherently ill-structured in that they are complex, defined by non-engineering constraints, are missing information, and contain conflicting information. Therefore, it is very important to prepare future engineering students to be able to anticipate the occurrence of such problems, and to be prepared to solve them. However, most courses are taught by academic professors and lecturers whose focus is on didactic teaching of fundamental principles and code-based design approaches leading to predetermined "right" answers. Most classroom-taught methods to solve well-structured problems and the methods needed to solve ill-structured problems are strikingly different. The focus of our current effort is to compare and contrast the problem solving approaches employed by students, academics and practicing professionals in an attempt to determine if students are developing the necessary skills to tackle ill-structured problems. To accomplish this, an ill-structured problem is developed, which will later be used to determine, based on analysis of oral and written responses of participants in semi-structured interviews, attributes of the gap between student, faculty, and professional approaches to ill-structured problem solving. Based on the results of this analysis, we will identify what pedagogical approaches may limit and help students' abilities to develop fully-formed solutions to ill-structured problems. This project is currently ongoing. This work-in-progress paper will present the study and proposed methods. Based on feedback obtained at the conference from the broader research community, the studies will be refined. The current phase includes three parts, (1) problem formulation;(2) protocol development;and (3) pilot study. Nanoparticles especially iron nanoparticles has proved to be effective in wastewater treatment due to large surface area and reactivity. The main purpose of this study is to prepare and characterize low cost iron nanoparticles that produced by reduction of iron cations using extracted phenolic compounds from black tea to produce carbide compounds also to use iron carbide nanoparticles for phosphate removal from aqueous solution. The iron carbide was characterized by using XRD, SEM and EDAX. The effect of iron carbide on phosphate removal was studied at different contact time, absorbent dose, pH, stirring rate, and initial phosphate concentration. The results indicated that iron carbide is effective in the removal of aqueous phosphate, where a removal efficiency of 82% was achieved for 5 mg/L phosphate solution after 30 min of contact time using dose 0.6 g/L at pH 3 and stirring rate 250 rpm. The removal efficiency of phosphate solutions ranged from 66 to 92% for initial phosphate concentration of 10 and 1 mg/L, respectively, at the same environmental conditions. The equilibrium isotherm of phosphate was determined using different models and the results showed that Hill model with the lowest Chi error 0.0637 was the best fitting model. Modeling results showed that artificial neural network (ANN) with a structure of 5 - 2 - 1 and a sum of squares error of 0.33 and 0.623 for testing and training, respectively, is reliable in describing the adsorption of phosphate onto the iron carbide nanoparticles. This paper presents the design of the new Thammapakon Pho Klang Nursing Home, Nakhon Ratchasima, as a modern model for Thai nursing homes. The nursing home is based on green-building, energy-saving and human-factors engineering principles and covers an area of 102,000 m2 (2,520 acres). The model includes the site design and the buildings of the nursing home, which conforms with green-building and energy-saving principles. The novel nursing home represents a practical approach to the optimization of building use and building resources in the areas of building utilization, water management, waste management, environmentally friendly materials selection, the effect of buildings on the health of building users and the environment, construction, operations, maintenance, and final demolition. The designed buildings include an office building, a hospital, a dormitory for the elderly, a canteen and a multipurpose building. The elderly’s facility design is based on universal design and human-factors engineering. Google’s SketchUp 8 program was used to design the layout of the buildings, the style and size of the openings around the buildings, the building envelope materials, and the position and types of vegetation around the building according to sun direction. It was determined that the overall thermal transmission values (OTTV) and the roof thermal transmission values (RTTV) of the designed buildings are within the prescribed energy-efficient building standard (OTTV 2 and RTTV 2). © 2018 International Association of Lowland technology. Prioritizing rural roads projects in north-eastern Thailand by analytical hierarchy process (AHP)

This paper presents the application of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) in rural roads prioritization. The paper exhibits the concept and process of the plan for rural road development and application of multiple criteria decision analysis using AHP for prioritizing rural roads on a rational basis. Rural road network was grouped on strategic issues and strategies of Department of Rural Roads. There are three main factors to be used as an indicator to assess the importance of routes of each type of road: Transport and Traffic engineering, Accessibility and Other. The result of criteria weights was determined by Expert Choice software according to the AHP model. The results of weight factor analysis can be divided into 2 groups: The Transportation and Traffic engineering dominant road (Logistics, Traffic Reduction and Country's Border Road) and the Accessibility dominant road (Tourism and Rural Area Accessibility Road). This study will be able to prioritize rural roads and allocate limited budget for development in the future. The master plan obtained from AHP application shows that this plan is consistent, and links with the country strategic plan under the Department of Rural Roads year 2017-2026, which is a longterm plan (10 years), and the Strategic Plan Framework Development of Rural Roads year 2017 - 2020, which is a medium-term plan (4 years). The main goal of the Rural Roads Development Plan in the area is to develop a rural road network to connect the Development of National Infrastructure and the Northeast Development Plan perfectly. © 2018 International Association of Lowland technology. In general, the process of building construction makes the inevitable wastes such as nails, formwork, steel and concrete. In order to reduce these wastes, parts of building have therefore been produced by using the manufacturing process. This process can improve construction process with minimum wastes and time of construction. However, the manufacturing process is not completely effective for building construction. There is also an additional cost for the transportation from manufactory to the construction site. For this reason, to set the exact time of the construction process, to avoid material waste and to effectively reduce the construction cost, all the production processes of manufacturing building should be started and ended at construction sites. This research has studied the Lean Manufacturing Process (LMP) and applied to the process of the construction which is called "the building with the on-site manufacturing process, BMP" to reduce instable human resource by machines which provides three advantages as follows: 1) the better quality, 2) minimum constructing cost and 3) minimum constructing period. © 2018 International Association of Lowland technology. Nowadays, nanotechnology and filtration using membranes have proven to be effective in wastewater treatment. Nanoparticles are highly reactive and effective redox and anti-microbial materials, while membrane filtration techniques reduce wastewater contaminants throughout the filtration process in an economical and fast manner. This study merges membrane technology and nanotechnology together through preparation of entrapped nano Zero Valent Iron (nZVI) into cellulose acetate (CA) membranes. The prepared nZVI was characterized by XRD and UV spectrophotometer, while the prepared membrane was characterized by measuring the water content, chemical compatibility, oil resistance, and membrane strength. The prepared membrane was tested for domestic wastewater treatment at different operating parameters pH, entrapped nZVI dose, and different flow rates. The efficiency of treatment was evaluated according to the reduction in turbidity, total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biological oxygen demand (BOD), ammonia, nitrate, total solids (TS), total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), and iron concentrations. The associated reductions were recorded as 92, 70, 69, 80, 73, 37, 33, 36, 28, 77 and 64%, respectively for pH between 7 and 8 using nZVI dosage of 0.2 g/100 mL CA and a flow rate of 100 mL/min.
