Sludge-fly ash geopolymer is a green material, which does not require cement as a cementitious binder. Sludge and fly ash (FA) are both by-products from Bang Khen water treatment plants and Mae Moh power plants, respectively. A liquid alkaline activator, L is a mixture of sodium silicate solution (Na2SiO3) and sodium hydroxide solution (NaOH). This article investigates the influence of compression energy (E) on the Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) of a novel sludge-fly ash geopolymer. The optimal liquid alkaline activator (L) content, sodium silicate solution to sodium hydroxide solution ratio (Na2SiO3/NaOH), heat temperature (T) and heat duration (D), providing the maximum UCS for each E is also investigated. Test results indicate that the optimal UFA ratio decreases as E increases. The optimal L/FA ratios for E = 592.5, 1346.6 and 2693.3 kJ/m3 are 1.5, 1.4 and 1.3, respectively. The Na2SiO3/NaOH ratio of 80:20 is considered as optimal for all E tested. The UCS of sludge-FA geopolymer at all E values tested increases with an increase of heat duration until a heat duration of 72 hours, after which the UCS becomes almost constant. The heat temperature accelerates the geopolymerization reaction and therefore enhances the strength. However, overheating results in micro-cracks in the samples due to the loss of moisture. As such, the optimal temperature is controlled by liquid content;the higher L/FA results in the lower optimal heat temperature. Since the optimal L/FA ratio decreases as E increases, the optimal T subsequently decreases with an increase in E;i.e., its values are 75, 85 and 95 °C for E = 2693.3, 1346.6 and 592.5 kJ/m3, respectively. The maximum UCS values of sludge-FA geopolymer at optimal ingredient and heat condition are 20, 18 and 16 MPa for E = 2693.3, 1346.6 and 592.5 kJ/m3, respectively, which meet the strength requirement of bearing masonry units as specified by the Thailand Industrial Standard (TIS).

Pollution and consumption of water are important during construction activities and the life cycle of buildings. Promoting water efficiency in buildings supports the sustainable use of water. Green building certification systems award credits to these efforts. The LEED certification system is generally based on rules, codes and regulations that are in effect in the US. However, its credibility and popularity encourages professionals in other countries to use LEED too. For global consistency, United States Green Building Council (USGBC) is supporting regional approaches. Practitioners in some countries apply LEED as is and some have adapted it by considering regional differences caused by geographical location and local conditions. The "water efficiency" category accounts for approximately 10% of the points that a building can receive in the LEED system. In this study, the "water efficiency" category of LEED is reviewed with respect to its adaptation in developing countries. The ways water efficiency are achieved under different conditions than those in the US are explored. A review of water efficiency practices in India, Abu Dhabi, and Turkey is presented. Practitioners in developing countries are expected to benefit from these observations. Copyright © 2013 by Research Publishing Services.

Indoor air quality and thermal comfort are important considerations in green building design because they are related to users' health, comfort, environmental satisfaction, and productivity. In the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification system, the "indoor environmental quality" category covers air quality and thermal comfort and accounts for approximately 15% of the points that a building can receive for LEED certification;it constitutes the third biggest category among the seven major categories in LEED 2009 for New construction and Major Renovation. LEED is used in some countries as is, and is modified in some other countries to fit the local conditions. In this study, the "indoor environmental quality" category of LEED is reviewed with respect to its adaptation to local conditions in developing countries. The status of the codes, standards, and regulations in "indoor environment quality" in developing countries are investigated. Suggestions are made for an easier implementation of LEED requirements in developing countries. Copyright © 2013 by Research Publishing Services.

Recent researches propose the integration of performance analysis to early stages of the design process in order to obtain the building's best final performance (Kolarevric;Malkawi, 2005;Holzer, 2010;Oxman, 2007). Thus, choosing the appropriate set of solutions and digital tools to develop this task is of high complexity and responsibility. The main objective of this paper is to identify and characterize the evaluation of different performances in social housing design stage, through the development of a model containing appropriate abstractions, for the representation of valid and accurate analytical data as inputs and outputs to specific simulations. This study was developed as field study involving experts in the area of thermal comfort, acoustic comfort, lighting comfort, materials conservation, water conservation and accessibility. The results show strengths and difficulties for integrating performance analysis focusing the information modelling and interoperability between computational simulations. A sequence for performing simulations considering inter-influences is proposed. This paper contributes with the characterization of the ideal information model to be use in different simulation tools, during the design stage of social housing solutions;promoting quality improvement related to social housing and the use of BIM (Building Information Modeling). Sustainable building projects deal with a multitude of technical, environmental, economic, social, organizational, and innovation-related issues, to name but a few. Achieving sustainability goals depends on how well these issues are handled. While some sustainable building projects are quite successful, some are not. It is therefore important to learn lessons from past projects. This research aims to reveal the key lessons concerning sustainability-related issues in building projects. To that end, challenges in the achievement of sustainability goals of building projects are discussed, and lessons learned systems are examined. After that, the events experienced by project managers in a large number of sustainable building projects are obtained from a major public agency's website and are analyzed. The findings show the key lessons that have an important impact on the success/failure of sustainable building projects. The expected contribution of the study is to foster advanced solutions for future sustainable projects. © 2013 American Society of civil Engineers.

Cost estimation model for semiconductor hookup construction projects

Hookup construction is one of the major tasks for a semiconductor facility construction project. The data required for conducting cost estimations of the hookup construction task are often incomplete because the whole project is undertaken in a short time or in a fast-track situation. Consequently, poor cost estimation is very likely resulted. Properly predicting the cost of a hookup construction project is crucial to control the total cost of a whole facility project. Thus, this study proposes a new cost estimation method for semiconductor hookup construction by integrating three existing approaches, including component ratios, fuzzy adaptive learning control network (FALCON), and fast messy genetic algorithm (fmGA). The proposed model is applied to 27 case projects. The results show that the average accuracy rate of the cost estimations for these case projects is around 84.85%. The accuracy rate of the proposed model has increased for about 6.07%~14.83% when comparing to those calculated by the conventional averaging method, the component ratios method and regression analysis method, respectively.

The architecture, engineering, construction and facility management (AECFM) industry has been experiencing many changes since inexpensive networked, mobile computing devices have become ubiquitous. With the rising amount of information and data generated in the life cycle of capital projects, information modeling and data interoperability have become a critical element in design, engineering, construction, and maintenance of capital facilities. Recent advances in Visualization, Information Modeling, and Simulation (VIMS) have the potential to address a number of these pressing challenges. The objective of this vision paper is to identify grand challenges related to Information Modeling. This is a companion paper to two others, which will address the areas of Visualization and Simulation. This paper examines the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as platforms to capture imagery at the neighborhood and individual building level for use in post-disaster field studies. Applications of UAVs in recent disasters as described in the literature are reviewed, and a case study investigating UAV capabilities for imagery collection following the EF-3 tornado impacting northern Alabama on March 2, 2012 is presented. Topics addressed include the multi-rotor UAV equipment and setup, imagery devices, flight considerations and capabilities, and imagery and metadata collection capabilities of the unmanned aerial system (UAS). Sample post-tornado imagery of building damage is shown, demonstrating the order of magnitude improvement in imagery resolution compared to typical postdisaster aerial photography. © ASCE and ATC 2013.

The increase on the competitiveness, the search on the customer satisfaction, the search by reducing waste in civil construction were facts that helped entrepreneurs and companies to seek new ways of working, being lean construction one of the ways to get that. Studies report that the application of the Lean tools in construction was carried out in an isolated way. This type of application was pointed as a major fact limiting the extent of achievement in implementing Lean principles. The aim of this studies is to identify opportunities to implement the principles of Lean Production in the service department of a construction company in Goiás, proposing routines that try to implement the continuous improvement of its processes, eliminating waste, reducing the Lead Time, allowing it to perform the mapping processes, improving the way records of requests for technical assistance, among others. For data collection it was carried out a semi-structured interview in four construction companies. Through the analysis of the responses, some Lean tools were developed like flowchart mapping of activities, an action plan for preventive maintenance and an application form for technical assistance, focusing on helping small and medium construction building companies to structure a Post Work construction Department ruled on the Lean principles (pull, perfection, value stream). It was concluded pointing out some difficulties in the implementation of lean principles in the department and emphasizing the Lean concepts that can be presented within the activities of the Post Work construction Department.

A steady growth in the application of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) for strengthening of masonry structures against earthquake hazard and static overloading is therefore beneficial for the maintenance of the architectural cultural heritage. The aim of this paper is to present a practical modeling approach for the nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEA) of FRP-confined masonry columns under concentric loading. A computational study using the finite element program LUSAS on the fracture behavior of concrete elements confined with CFRP jackets has been conducted by the application of Drucker-Prager criterion to the FRP-confined masonry columns tested by Krevaikas and Triatafillou (2005). Modeling aspects and detailed analysis results for square masonry columns are presented and discussed with a view toward assessing the capabilities of the structural modeling. © civil-Comp Press, 2011.
