This paper is concerned with the axial behavior of the RC columns. Stress-strain relationships of experimentally tested RC columns under concentric loading are compared with the predictions of the Koksal model. Moment-curvature analyses of RC sections are also performed employing the same model in a self-developed moment-curvature program for confined concrete. Results are compared with the output of EXTRACT which uses the Mander concrete model. © 2011 WIT Press.

This paper presents the findings of a study conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in enhancing student learning in structural concrete design courses. In reinforced concrete design, three dimensional (3D) visualization of concrete members can advance students understanding of reinforcement details and rebar-placement. BIM facilitates the usage of 3D views in teaching such courses and provides opportunities to address the challenges faced by the students during the visualization process. A study involving the use of BIM 3D views were conducted in two courses over a one-semester period. In the study, improvements in student performance were observed in several of the problems presented when 3D models were used. BIM has the potential to provide faculty with a tool that can improve teaching of structural design courses in a more visual and interactive way and greatly enhance the educational experience of the students. © 2011 ASCE.

Students completing an engineering technology degree, such as Youngstown State University's civil & construction engineering technology (CCET) bachelor's degree program are expected to be productive in design offices and in engineering departments of construction firms. Accordingly, the curriculum has evolved over the past thirty years to include design projects of varying complexity in many courses. This philosophy has now been expanded to provide a multidisciplinary design experience for engineering technology (ET) majors. This paper describes the planning an implementation of a pair of courses required to be taken concurrently by the civil & construction engineering technology (CCET) and Electrical engineering technology (EET) baccalaureate students during their senior year. Mechanical engineering technology (MET) may elect to take one or both courses as well. These courses serve as a capstone experience that incorporates both individual and team interdisciplinary design projects. CCET 4884 - civil and Structural Facilities Design is an interdisciplinary capstone course that provides an overview of the requirements and design procedures for civil and structural systems including site development, utilities, foundation, wall systems, framing systems and floor system design as well as specifications & estimating. This course has a major interdisciplinary group project. EET 4880 - Electrical and Mechanical Facilities Design is a multidisciplinary course that acquaints the student with physical processes involved in heating, ventilating and air conditioning;plumbing;electrical power distribution;lighting;and communication systems. Several small group labs and studies that are focused on system design are required by this class. These two courses must be taken concurrently. They lay the groundwork for overall facilities design and the assignment of projects in each class that incorporate elements from the other. © American Society for engineering Education, 2008.

Teaching models have evolved as research on learning has progressed. Kolb and Felder championed a learning styles paradigm while Dale developed a "Cone of Learning" model to address teaching styles. To maximize the learning experience for one talented undergraduate, we developed a project that required active leaning by the student and opened the potential for improvement of the civil & construction engineering technology curriculum. Understanding design loading requirements and combinations of loads is a challenging part of the design process, yet it is often not emphasized in undergraduate engineering or engineering technology curriculum. Application of ASCE 7, Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures is often an incidental part of one or more design courses. Its proper application, however, requires significant class time so that students can gain the proper understanding of its many facets. Consideration of transient loads imposed during the construction process receives even less attention. Design for these loads is generally dismissed as "means and methods" which are the responsibility of the contractor. However, many graduates are employed by contractors or consultants working for contractors. Understanding that there is a difference between design loads and construction loads is, therefore, relevant and important. This paper looks at construction loads in accordance with ASCE 37, Design Loads on Structures During construction and is based on an independent project undertaken by a student. He was tasked with researching the topic and preparing a set of notes for presentation to an undergraduate engineering technology class. This paper presents a summary of the topic to show how an undergraduate student would present the material. A review of the material prepared by the student provides insight into the level of understanding of this topic that can be achieved through active independent study and highlights the need for civil and construction e

This paper presents some of the hurdles that the engineering technology programs at Youngstown State University struggled with during the reaccreditation process and are still refining. With less formal direction from TAC-ABET as to what they are focusing on or require for accreditation, it took several iterations along with networking with other institutions to gather insight and suggestions just to begin to understand the depth and breadth of the assessment process and its impact on department resources. Starting at the beginning of the process and continuing through the revisions and the ongoing refinement. The topics discussed include;what to assess and how to assess the criteria identified;development of the assessment rubrics;decisions on how to collect the data;restructuring courses to cover topics that need to be assessed;revising the rubrics and data collection to gather meaningful data;and development of a sustainable internal assessment process. Issues generated from the managing of the ongoing assessment efforts on workload and strategies for developing a sustainable assessment and evaluation process for a multi-program engineering technology department are considered.

The future of America's global competitiveness depends upon a well-educated, technologically literate workforce. However, if proactive measures are not taken in the near future, the United States will face a serious shortage of scientists, engineers, technologists, and mathematicians because high school students, especially those from underrepresented groups, are increasingly losing interest in these subjects. The key in reversing this trend lies in our ability to promote science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects and professions in a more socially relevant, real-world context and to recognize the differences in learning styles and self-efficacy between males, females and minorities. In an effort to increase the number and diversity of students pursuing engineering related majors, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte has adopted a comprehensive and integrated approach involving three separate National Science Foundation (NSF) funded projects. Together, the projects are designed to raise the engineering awareness of middle and high school students, teachers and guidance counselors. The central project is the Enhancing Diversity in engineering technology (EDIET) project which focuses on the establishment and support of North Carolina Junior engineering and technology (NCJETS) clubs at local area high schools. In order to receive project support, a high school club must have a population of at least 50% non-traditional engineering student types. The clubs compete in regional competitions such as balsa wood bridge building, trebuchets, robotics, and math tests, etc. The EDIET project also sponsors week long summer engineering technology camps hosted by the university. To reinforce the impact of the EDIET project, the Teaching engineering to Counselors and Teachers (TECT) project was developed to strengthen the way in which high school teachers and counselors approach the integration of engineering based materials into their courses and counseling

This study investigates the potential application of high powered ultrasonics as a liquefaction pretreatment of sugary-2 corn slurry. Ground sugary-2 corn (Zea Mays L.) slurry was treated with ultrasonics at 20kHz and amplitudes of 192-320mpp(***-peak) for 5, 10, 15, 20 and 40 seconds. After sonication, enzymes (Stargen001) were added to the samples to hydrolyze the starch into fermentable sugars. It was found that the reducing sugar released in the treated samples were 6-fold higher than in the non-treated samples. Scanning electron microscopy images revealed that the sugary starch was partially gelatinized during sonication. This observation was confirmed by polarized-light microscopic images, where deformed "Maltese crosses" were found. The swelling rate of sonicated samples was nearly 66 times higher than when applying conventional heating. This result confirms better gelatinization capability of ultrasonics compared to conventional heating. The maximum relative net energy gain (additional chemically released energy) of the sonicated samples was at 5s of sonication time with a power setting between 248-330W. The findings in this study indicated ultrasonics as a promising pretreatment step in sugary-2 corn hydrolysis.

This paper highlights research that explores the key factors that affect the attraction and retention of minority faculty in engineering and technology programs in rural communities, in particular southern rural communities. It is well known that the pool of minority applicants, specifically black applicants, for faculty positions in engineering and technology programs is very small. Furthermore, the attraction and retention of qualified minority faculty to teach in engineering and technology programs in rural communities (that is, communities with a population of less than 30,000) is even more limited. There are several factors that contribute to this phenomenon, including university classification, department culture, student demographics, and geographical location. We focus on the attraction and retention problem of minority engineering faculty at a comprehensive university in a rural community in southeast Georgia. The target institution has successfully recruited and retained minority faculty members at a steady rate over the last five years. Approximately, 16% of its total faculty are minorities. These observations initiated the basis of this study. We began to question the nature of this phenomenon and ponder the unique characteristics of this university that fueled these results. Appropriate data was collected, analyzed and used to identify contributing factors that lead to the attraction and retention of minority more specifically, black engineering and technology faculty members at this institution. Using several data analysis techniques, we show that there is a high correlation between diversity (in terms of students, faculty and the academic learning environment) and the attraction and retention of black engineering and technology faculty members. These data indicate that the diversity model implemented at this university is successful in attracting and retaining minority faculty members. The US Federal Agencies, including the Federal Highway Administration, recommend and in some case require rehabilitation alternatives before replacing a facility or bridge structure to effectively use available federal funds. The goal of facility management is to assess the structures most critically in need of repairstrengthening, decide the appropriate retrofit, and control cost. A project-level analysis is needed to assess costs associated with alternative repair procedures for specific facility and infrastructure treatments. The objective of this paper is to report the design and conceptual basis of a project-level cost-benefit model for infrastructure and facility management. This modelling approach addresses the process of constructing the repair, providing resulting costs, that build on the patented Parametric Automated Cost engineering System and contributes new and fundamental interdisciplinary systems-based knowledge applicable to facilities and bridge infrastructure systems. This model design provides: economically smart repairstrengthening options;a fundamentally new process documenting the decision processes;an audit trail on repair alternatives;and the basis for documenting lessons learned. The context of this paper uses the most recent applications to bridge repair, but builds on over 15 years experiences of usage and application of this modelling approach to vertical (buildings) and horizontal (infrastructure) facility management. © 2007 PalgraveMacMillan Ltd.
