Countering the effects of urban green gentrification through nature-based solutions: A scoping review

Statement of problem: Green gentrification is an emerging issue, where Urban green space (UGS) upgrades lead to higher living costs, displacing lower-income residents, raising concerns about accessibility, sustainability, and equity. This phenomena challenges the inclusive and equitable development of urban environments. Purpose: Through an integrative analysis of existing literature, this study aims to address a significant gap in current research by exploring how Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) can more effectively counteract the adverse effects of UGS gentrification. Method: Utilizing a scoping literature review, the research analyzes articles from 2015 to 2024 to synthesize insights for a more equitable urban development. Results: Findings reveal diverse lessons learned and strategies for countering green gentrification across different urban settings worldwide. However, a significant number of studies predominantly focus on the Global North, primarily in Europe and North America, which may lead to a regional bias. Practical implications: The results provide insights for policymakers, urban planners, and communities, guiding the creation of more inclusive and sustainable urban green spaces. Future directions: Further research should focus on developing quantitative metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of NbS in mitigating urban gentrification and expanding the geographic focus to include more underrepresented regions. © 2024 The Author(s)

Quantifying the vulnerability of road networks to flood-induced closures using traffic simulation

Disruptions in road networks can significantly impact traffic flow, necessitating the identification and mitigation of vulnerable components. This study presents a methodology to assess the vulnerability and robustness of road networks, addressing the research gap in comprehensive approaches that effectively evaluate both controlled intersections and uncontrolled/free-flow highway segments. The proposed framework employs traffic simulation tools to model road closures within designated study areas, focusing on networks in Qatar. Performance measures such as average control delay and volume to capacity ratios are utilized to calculate vulnerability indices for network components. The two-pronged approach quantifies the impact of simulated closures at both the component and network levels, revealing critical intersections and road segments that markedly affect network performance during disruptions. The findings contribute to the field by providing transportation engineers with an effective quantitative tool to detect vulnerabilities in their road network, guiding design plans and actions to mitigate the potential harmful impacts of disruptive events on transportation infrastructure. The methodology's scalability ensures its applicability to various operational contexts, offering significant insights for transportation planning and infrastructure resilience. By establishing a comprehensive vulnerability analysis framework, this study enhances the understanding and management of road network vulnerabilities in complex urban environments. Further research on integrating dynamic traffic assignment and real-time data is recommended to further enhance the predictive accuracy and applicability of the proposed framework, ultimately improving transportation infrastructure resilience. © 2024 The Author(s)

environmental impacts of small scale industries are still not well investigated, especially for estates where multiple small scale industries are clustered causing cumulative effects potentially impacting most vulnerable groups. This study aimed to investigate the concentrations of heavy metals (Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Pb, Al, Zn, and Cr) and the metalloid (As) in surface soils near the intensely active small-scale industrial area in Thailand, assess the contamination levels in the co-located child care center, and estimate potential human health risks from exposure to the heavy metals. Surface soil heavy metal(loid) elements were evaluated across a background area, area near main roads, a small-scale industrial area, and a child care centre. The concentrations of Al were found be the highest at all investigation sites, with the most elevated concentrations observed in the small-scale industrial area. The concentration of Pb in the industrial area reached 1176 mg/kg, exceeding the national standard and acceptable limit. Moreover, the contamination level for Cu, Pb, and Zn in the industrial area imply a considerable risk with enrichment factor EF > 40, and geo-accumulation index Igeo ≥5. Heavy metal levels (Ni, Cu, Pb) in the soil near the road and the child care center were similar, suggesting shared contamination sources. Conversely, Al, Zn, As, and Cr in the child care center had slightly higher concentrations than near the road but lower than the small-scale industrial area, indicating potential industrial influence on metal levels within the child care center. The principal component analysis showed Mn and Fe distributed in the background, while As, Pb, Ni, Cu, Al, Zn, and Cr accumulated in the small-scale industrial area. The findings indicate that small-scale industrial activities contribute to elevated levels of heavy metals in the soil, particularly within the child care center, posing significant ingestion risks, especially for children (HI > 1). Driven by the need for sustainable construction solutions, there is renewed interest in earth-based materials. Biopolymer stabilizers can enhance the rheological and structural properties of these materials to facilitate their use in 3D printing. This research examined the influence of sodium alginate on the stability, particle interaction, rheology, and 3D printability of kaolinite, a commonly found clay mineral in soils deemed suitable for construction. Findings revealed that sodium alginate could boost electrostatic interactions to enhance the stability of kaolinite suspensions. This rise in repulsive potential energy also reduced storage modulus and yield stress by orders of magnitude. However, as the alginate content increased beyond its cross-linking concentration (0.12% - 0.6%), a reverse trend was observed, which was attributed to the formation of a three-dimensional polymer network. Furthermore, alginate addition shifted the "printability window" of kaolinite suspensions to mixtures with higher solid contents, which has positive implications on strength and shrinkage. © 2023, The Authors. Genji-firefly has been one of the key symbols of rural environmental conservation. The species lives underwater as larvae, in the soil when they pupate, and emerges on the ground as adults. Because the habitat conditions of larvae and adults differ greatly, the habitat requirement of Genji-firefly must be clarified over a wide range from instream to the surrounding riparian environment. In this study, we developed a habitat suitability model for Genji-firefly by relating the number of individuals to local landscape features surveyed in a small river in an agricultural watershed. For habitat modelling, Random Forests, a well-known highly predictive machine learning method, was used to model species distributions and to extract quantitative information on their ecological characteristics. As a result, a good agreement was found between observed and modelled number of individuals, although some issues still remain for the test data. We were able to extract local landscape features that characterize the habitat suitability of adult firefly. In future, we plan to deepen our habitat suitability assessment by taking into account uncertainties such as noise originated from absent data.

As antimicrobial resistance continues to pose a significant threat to global health, this study provided a focused examination of the prevalence and behavior of key antibiotic resistance genes in aquatic environments. We investigated the quantitative distribution of intI1, sul1, blaTEM, blaNDM, blaVIM, mcr-1, tetQ, and crAssphage within wastewater influents (n=12), effluents (n=12) and river water samples (n=12), from three municipal wastewater treatment plants and three river locations in an urbanized watershed in Central Thailand over dry and wet seasons. The qPCR method demonstrated that intI1, sul1, blaTEM, and tetQ were most abundant in all samples (6.12 – 7.89 mean log10copies/100 mL), with all genes consistently uniform levels across diverse locations, suggesting the potential for any site to act as a monitoring sentinel. Although there is a significant reduction of ARG concentrations by WWTPs, the persistence of these genes in effluents points to the limited effectiveness of existing treatment methodologies. Temporal data indicated stable ARG concentrations over time, but tetQ levels rose during the wet season, in alignment with the monsoonal climate in Thailand. Additionally, we identified crAssphage, a marker of human sewage contamination, exhibited strong correlations with the more abundant ARGs, implying that human waste contributes significantly to the environmental burden of ARGs. The results of this research highlight the widespread nature of ARGs in water systems and the need for improved treatment and sanitation strategies to mitigate the public health threat posed by antimicrobial resistance. © 2024, The Authors. Despite the fact that densified mixture design algorithm (DMDA) has been identified as a promising tool for green concrete mix design, its use in real practice has still been minimal worldwide. Due to the lack of precise information on DMDA computation in earlier studies, this work proposes DMDA including fly ash and ground granulated blast-furnace slag as a viable way to improve the long-term performance of green concrete. To encourage the use of DMDA, this study offers a detailed description of the DMDA mix design, as well as a step-by-step standard operating procedure and an empirical example of the computation. Assessments of the long-term performance of green mixtures (self-consolidating concrete and high-performance concrete) and ordinary Portland cement concrete (designed using the conventional method of American Concrete Institute, ACI) were made. Performances of the ACI (O6000 mixture) and DMDA concretes (S6000 and H6000 mixtures) were then compared in terms of compressive strength, elastic modulus, shrinkage, and creep strain. As a result, all of the concrete samples attained the target strength of above 41 MPa (6000 psi) after only 28 days. Moreover, compressive strength, elastic modulus, shrinkage, and creep strain increased significantly in all of the concretes over curing time. Importantly, the experimental results confirmed that both types of DMDA concrete exhibited higher compressive strength and better long-term performance than the ACI concrete under elastic modulus, creep, and shrinkage aspects. © 2023 American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
