Surface chloride concentration (Cs) is one of the parameters that feed models used to simulate chloride ingress into concrete. Therefore, understanding its behaviour over time is important for a more accurate forecasting. This work is part of a larger researcher project that aims to analyse the transport of chlorides into concrete in marine atmosphere zone based on long-term field exposures. The present paper focuses on the behaviour of Cs along 12.5 years. Prismatic concrete specimens with three different mixtures were exposed at places located at four different distances from the sea. Climatic variables and chloride deposition on the wet candle were parameters used to characterise the environment. Periodically, samples from concrete surface were extracted from the specimens and chemically analysed. Results show that Cs increases along the years and suggests a tendency of stabilisation over time, although this level could not be reached in the present exposure period. The relationship between Cs and chloride deposition rate on the wet candle was analysed and it was observed that the function Cs = C0+ kcs(Dac)nis the one that best fits to experimental data. © The authors.

Geothermal reservoirs are significant sources of renewable energy. Accurate geometric modeling of these reservoirs is essential for understanding the distribution of heat and fluid dynamics within them. This study aims to develop a geometric model of the Sibayak geothermal field using borehole data. Borehole data provide detailed geological information, which is crucial for constructing a realistic geometric model. The methodology of this research involves several key steps: the collection of borehole data from the Sibayak geothermal field, the construction of a 3D geometric model of the reservoir using COMSOL Multiphysics based on the borehole data, and the validation of the model through comparison with field data and previous research findings. The results indicate that the developed geometric model successfully identifies zones with high geothermal potential and provides an accurate depiction of the reservoir's boundaries and characteristics. Modeling the geometry of geothermal reservoirs using borehole data offers profound insights into the internal dynamics of the reservoir and can serve as a valuable tool for planning and optimizing geothermal energy exploitation. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing. The function of the basement is to carry the weight of the upper structure into the soil and to resist lateral loads around the basement wall. One aspect of geotechnical engineering that often a problem in basement wall planning is the determination of lateral ground pressure in the basement wall due to earthquake which must be held by the basement wall. In this study, an analysis of the effects of local soil conditions due to dynamic loads is done through analysis of soil-structure interaction. The analysis is done by modeling the local soil with variations in basement depth and the adjacent basement distance to get the lateral pressure distribution due to dynamic load. The analyzed soil conditions are considered homogeneous at land sites SE (soft soil) with the dynamic load input from earthquake loads uses a 10% probability of exceedance in 50 years (500 years). The most influential parameter for soil displacement is the distance of the basement and then the depth of the basement. The most influential parameter on lateral forces is the depth of the basement followed by the distance of the basement. © 2020 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

Each year in the past seven years, a summer camp at North Dakota State University has attracted tribal college students and tribal high school graduates from the Indian Reservations in North Dakota to learn science, technology, and engineering. One of the activities of the camp is to engage the participants in exploring specific science/engineering subjects through hands-on activities. Students are provided with opportunities to select topics they are interested in. They are divided into small groups, usually 2 to 3 students in a group, and spend one week with university professors working on different projects. Professors from 5 engineering departments and 2 science departments have participated in this activity. Through the years, various topics have been selected to connect students to key subjects of different disciplines, to expose them to contemporary engineering issues and challenges, and to attract them to engineering programs. Professors are encouraged to develop project activities that cover fundamental science/engineering concepts, stimulate critical thinking of the students, and introduce students to procedures of scientific thinking and research. Based on experiences and lessons learned from working with Native American students, professors have been constantly looking for methods to connect with these students by improving hands-on activities to engage them in exploratory learning. In this paper, a set of instructional projects are used as examples to illustrate different approaches and activities that have been used to involve students in active learning through experimental studies. Methods and materials developed in this program have received positive responses from participating students and professors and are applicable to other student groups who are interested in learning science and engineering. © American Society for engineering Education, 2007.

A feasibility study of recycling of construction and demolition waste for structural purposes

The environmental problems related to construction and demolition waste involve their final dis-posal and the use of raw materials. The main goal of this research was to manage on site con-struction and demolition waste and generate concrete for structural purposes by processing concrete and mortar wastes. A Construction and Demolition Waste Management Plan (CDWMP) was developed for this study and applied by means of the implementation of recy-cling procedures. This plan included quantifying wastes and analyzing their generation. The concrete and mortar wastes were separated for recycling to produce concrete in which these wastes, respectively, replaced fractions of coarse aggregate (crushed stone) and fine aggre-gate (sand). Tests were carried out to characterize the resulting concrete and the aggregates used. The strength of the concrete generated varied from 6 MPa to 21.4 MPa, for the same mixture. It was observed that structural concretes can be produced using recycled aggregates, however this cost is higher compared to that of concrete produced with conventional aggre-gates. It was also concluded that despite the cost of concrete production, there were environmental and economic advantages to performing and applying the CDWMP to this specific con-struction site. The NANOOS-Pilot project (Northwest Association of Networked Ocean Observing Systems) is an ongoing effort to develop coastal ocean observing assets for the integrated observation of the estuaries and shorelines of the Pacific Northwest. The project is actively building nowcast and predictive capabilities for this environment, as well as interactive access to archival data, real-time data, and selected forecasts. In addition to the potential benefits accrued to the many sectors that depend upon the coastal waters of the Pacific Northwest, there are a number of education opportunities related to ocean observatories involving undergraduate and graduate institutions, K-12 schools and adult literacy programs. In this work, we describe some ocean technology applications of the NANOOS-Pilot and focus on the educational use of the system in a senior-level civil engineering course on Coastal Infrastructure. © American Society for engineering Education, 2006.

The interest of many research groups regarding manufacture of composite materials by using natural fibers is increasing world-wide. The main objectives involve the improvement of mechanical properties, mainly those related to resistance and elasticity. In the present study in a first stage, polymer concrete specimens were elaborated by using an unsaturated polyester resin, silica sand and luffa fibers; after, they were gamma irradiated at different doses and their mechanical properties were evaluated. Two different silica particle sizes (0.15 mm and 0.6 mm), and four different luffa fiber concentrations (0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2 wt%) were used, as well as 50 and 100 kGy of radiation dose. The results show a gradually diminution of compressive strength and modulus of elasticity when adding luffa fiber concentration. Nevertheless, such mechanical features are increasing when polymer concrete is gamma irradiated.

D-SRGAN: DEM Super-Resolution with Generative Adversarial Networks

Digital elevation model (DEM) is a critical data source for variety of applications such as road extraction, hydrological modeling, flood mapping, and many geospatial studies. The usage of high-resolution DEMs as inputs in many application areas improves the overall reliability and accuracy of the raw dataset. The goal of this study is to develop a machine learning model that increases the spatial resolution of DEM without additional information. In this paper, a GAN based model (D-SRGAN), inspired by single image super-resolution methods, is developed and evaluated to increase the resolution of DEMs. The experiment results show that D-SRGAN produces promising results while constructing 3 feet high-resolution DEMs from 50 feet low-resolution DEMs. It outperforms common statistical interpolation methods and neural network *** study shows that it is possible to use the power of artificial neural networks to increase the resolution of the DEMs. The study also demonstrates that approaches from single image super-resolution can be applied for DEM super-resolution. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. part of Springer Nature.
