Digital Terrain Models (DTM) and Digital Elevation Models (DEM) are important for obtaining the Index of Connectivity, as they provide valuable information to assess the possibility of sediments reaching the riverbed in watershed basins. This is crucial for proactive management, as it allows the adoption of preventive and mitigating measures. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the effect of the spatial resolution of DEMs with resolutions of 5 m and 2 m, and between the DTM and DEM at 2 m, in determining the Index of Connectivity (IC). Additionally, it was investigated whether it is possible to use only one spatial resolution of digital models to assess the geospatial distribution of IC for all hydrogeomorphological landscapes of the Duas Bocas River watershed, located in the Metropolitan Region of Greater Vitória, in the state of Espírito Santo, Southeast Brazil. For this study, the Borselli Index of Connectivity model (et al., 2008) was used, originally developed for rural areas of Italy and widely applied in different regions worldwide. The data used, including Digital Elevation and Terrain Models and land use and cover information, were obtained from the Integrated Geospatial Base System of the State of Espírito Santo (Brazil), which is publicly *** results indicate that a better geospatial representation of IC occurs when changing the spatial resolution of DEMs from a 5 m pixel to a 2 m pixel and when using the 2 m DTM instead of the 2 m DEM. When analyzing the relationship between IC and the hydrogeomorphological landscapes in the basin, it was observed that, in the absence of models with an even finer pixel resolution, the 2 m DTM is the most suitable option, as it presented IC values consistent within and between landscapes in the Escalated Terraces of Southern Espírito Santo, Coastal Hills and Massifs, and Coastal Plateaus sectors. INSITU TREATMENT OF SOIL FOR THE EXTRACTION OF ORGANIC CONTAMINANTS

The initial progress of an ongoing laboratory investigation is described in which phenol and aniline were mixed into a slightly organic, loamy soil and various aqueous solutions used to attempt to extract these organic contaminants. Extraction compounds consisted of deionized water, hydrogen peroxide at varying concentration and sodium hydroxide at varying pH. Two methods were used to affect desorption. The first method, which is simple and quick, has been termed the ''successive reverse isotherm'' (SRI) method, and the second method, which is very labor intensive and time-consuming, but which represents better the conditions that exist in an in situ extraction operation, was the permeation method. The SRI method indicated that an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide in concentration of 200 to 500 mg/L extracted about 45% of the phenol, while an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide at a pH of 10 extracted in excess of 70% of the phenol. On the other hand, none of the solutions extracted more than 25% of the aniline. Further tests conducted in permeameters indicated that approximately 80% of phenol was recovered by permeation with either hydrogen peroxide or sodium hydroxide and that both were measurably more effective than deionized water. Neither the phenol nor any of the decontaminants had any major effect on hydraulic conductivity or physical index properties of the soil. From the results of the tests to date, the SRI test appears to provide a viable method of predicting whether permeameter tests will yield productive results.

The increasing CO2 concentration in the atmosphere has substantial impacts on the global temperature. For energy sustainability and minimization of the effects of global warming, an approach to understand CO2 capturing and a carbon neutral culture is extremely essential in the present circumstances. The CO2 emission from vehicles and industries can be minimized using energy cost-effective techniques and can be converted more selectively into reusable fuels via thermochemical, electrochemical, photochemical, photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, biological and inorganic carbonate-based approaches. In this review article, we have discussed the effects of increased global temperature on human beings, economy and climate change. Further, we have discussed the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 (PC-CO2) into gaseous and liquid fuels under solar light driven photocatalysis. The adsorption and activation of CO2, its conversion into various intermediates, their stability and selectivity of the final products have been elaborated comprehensively. The conversion mechanisms of CO2 into CO, CH4, alcohol, aldehyde and carboxylic acid have been discussed in detail. The role of defects and exposed facets of photocatalysts, effect of metal and non-metal dopants, and the additive role of co-catalyst on the mechanisms and selectivity of the conversion products have been discussed comprehensively. Finally, future perspective is discussed to highlight the research gap in the PC-CO2. We hope that this article will help to understand the mechanisms of PC-CO2 and will direct researchers to add their role in the reduction of CO2 to control global warming and make life easier on earth in the coming years. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

During food processing, large amounts of waste are generated, which compromise the environment and society. The valorization of agri-food by-products has been investigated as a solution to obtain clean energy and value-added materials, improving food security and production profitability. This research focuses on the by-products of baru (Dipteryx alata Vog.) and monguba (Pachira aquatica Aubl.), discussing their applications and biotechnological perspectives. A critical review of the parameters related to the valorization of these by-products was conducted, using publications from 2013 to 2023, prioritizing studies that presented new knowledge. An increase in publications on the topic was observed starting in 2020, with Brazil leading, followed by India, Portugal, and Singapore. Although still underexplored, eight areas of knowledge were identified, with emphasis on food science and chemistry. Monguba lacks technological exploitation and economic value, while baru, despite being more documented, remains underutilized. Both fruits have fractions (epicarp, mesocarp, and endocarp) that are often considered waste but are of scientific interest. The mesocarp of baru is rich in proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and phenolic compounds with high antioxidant capacity. The by-products of baru and monguba can be used in the extraction of nutraceutical compounds, in the transformation into biomaterials for water impurity removal, in renewable energy production, in food enrichment, and as ingredients in animal feed, improving the quality of eggs and meat. The use of these by-products offers economic and environmental advantages, reducing contamination caused by the improper disposal of agro-industrial waste. It is essential to promote their commercial exploitation and potential applications. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.

Relative importance of pathologies in the severity of facade degradation

The facade is the main protective barrier against the atmospheric agents acting in a building. Many times, as a result of these agents, the facade manifests pathologies that lead to the loss of performance of the external wall claddings. This article aims to establish and score the importance of the pathologies involved in the cement mortars rendering. The probable causes and the influence on the performance decrease over time are analyzed. The methodology is based on the survey and mapping of the pathologies observed in field survey, correlating these pathologies with probable causes and implications for the system performance. Among the active pathologies, cracks had both a higher intensity of occurrence and a greater gravity compared to the others. Some pathologies, such as detachment and efflorescence, although of great importance in the degradation, are little observed in the studied buildings. As a result, is presented a scale of importance of pathologies, which has great application for the development of facade degradation models. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Flamingos use their L-shaped beak and morphing feet to induce vortical traps for prey capture

Flamingos feature one of the most sophisticated filter-feeding systems among birds, characterized by upside-down feeding, comb-like lamellae, and a piston-like tongue. However, the hydrodynamic functions of their L-shaped chattering beak, S-curved neck, and distinct behaviors such as stomping and feeding against the flow remain a mystery. Combining live flamingo experiments with live brine shrimp and passive particles, bioinspired physical models, and 3D CFD simulations, we show that flamingos generate self-induced vortical traps using their heads, beaks, and feet to capture agile planktonic prey in harsh fluid environments. When retracting their heads rapidly (~40 cm/s), flamingos generate tornado-like vortices that stir up and upwell bottom sediments and live shrimp aided by their L-shaped beak. Remarkably, they also induce directional flows (~7 cm/s) through asymmetric beak chattering underwater (~12 Hz). Their morphing feet create horizontal eddies during stomping, lifting, and concentrating sediments and brine shrimp, while trapping fast-swimming invertebrates, as confirmed by using a 3D-printed morphing foot model. During interfacial skimming, flamingos produce a vortical recirculation zone at the beak's tip, aiding in prey capture. Experiments using a flamingo-inspired particle collection system indicate that beak chattering improves capture rates by ~7×. These findings offer design principles for bioinspired particle collection systems that may be applied to remove pollutants and harmful microorganisms from water bodies.

The time-dependent developments of the strain observed on the slope surface in pre-failure stages are often expressed in analogy with the development of strain at creep fracture of metals. Therefore, several equations for prediction of slope failure using the creep models have been proposed and used. In this study, multi-layered shear model test apparatus was developed to observe detailed movement of the surface layer of slope before failure. Automatic detection of flocculation kinetic mechanisms and total hydraulic retention time (THRT) in multi-chamber systems in series is essential for seamless water treatment modelling. This study presents the first open-source tool for modelling flocculation kinetics and THRT in multi-chambers systems, with their sensitivity to image analysis. This study introduces three key novelties: (1) a non-derivative Secant method for simulating THRT, (2) use of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to facilitate curve fitting technique for modelling flocculation kinetic coefficients, and (3) automatic retention time modelling directly from floc images, including sensitivity to threshold-based image segmentation. The proposed Secant method demonstrated greater robustness compared to the existing Newton-Raphson method (N-R), as it avoided convergence in cases where the N-R produced negative retention times. The PSO algorithm produced results comparable to the Bayesian approach, with aggregation coefficients of 2.773 × 10⁻⁴ and 1.905 × 10⁻⁴, and breakage coefficients of 1.186 × 10⁻⁶ and 2.656 × 10⁻⁶, at low and high velocity gradients (G), respectively. Flocculation kinetics at low G has steady aggregation followed by a dynamic equilibrium, while high G exhibited rapid formation of fragile flocs, followed by dominant breakage mechanism, and a later lower equilibrium. Scaled G for multi-chamber systems showed that reactor configurations with an immediate low G in the second chamber resulted in an average 50 % decrease in THRT. Finally, aggregation and breakage coefficients were sensitive to image segmentation thresholds, but THRT sensitivity is limited. Remote Sensing Applied to the Extraction of Road Geometric Features Based on Optimum Path Forest Classifiers, Northeastern Brazil

One of the principal difficulties related to road safety management in Brazil is the lack of data on road projects, especially those on rural roads, which makes it difficult to use road safety studies and models from other countries as a reference. Updating road networks through the use of hyperspectral remote sensing images can be a good alternative. However, accurately recognizing and extracting hyperspectral images from roads has been recognized as a challenging task in the processing of hyperspectral data. In order to solve the aforementioned challenges, Hyperion hyperspectral images were combined with the Optimum Forest Path (OPF) algorithm for supervised classification of rural roads and the effectiveness of the OPF and SVM classifiers when applied to these areas was compared. Both classifiers produced reasonable results, however, the OPF algorithm outperformed SVM. The higher classification accuracy obtained by the OPF was mainly attributed to the ability to better distinguish between regions of exposed soil and unpaved roads.

This study seeks to understand and estimate atmospheric longwave irradiance (R_ld) and surface net radiation (R_n) using parameterized models applied to semi-arid regions of northeastern Brazil. Studies on surface energy flows are of interest to areas such as environmental and agricultural sciences, and are of great importance in analyzing and managing water resources. Thus, this research could benefit the study region, which constantly experiences periods of water scarcity that affect agricultural activities and the lives of communities. An exploration of data gathered from micrometeorological stations spanning the period from 2014 to 2016 within various caatinga vegetation areas exhibiting distinct levels of preservation. This exploration involved comparative analyses between methods available in existing literature and those proposed by the authors. The biome under study is unique to Brazil and remains relatively underexplored in terms of comprehensive research and studies. In the R_ld analysis, parameterizations for days with clear and cloudy skies were considered, and the proposed models presented results that surpassed the results of most of the tested models in the literature. Among the models examined, the Crawford and Duchon (1999) model displayed remarkable efficiency in estimating R_ld within the study area. Furthermore, the models were fine-tuned to estimate the surface R_n for the respective areas of each micrometeorological station. These calibrations factored in both dry and rainy seasons for the R_n analyses. The calibration results were satisfactory, with r² values for the proposed models greater than 0.90 for R_ld for clear sky conditions and 0.94 for all conditions, and a high agreement was shown with values greater than 0.96 according to the criteria of Willmott et al.
