Surfaces of commercially available membrane filters were modified by the dispersion of poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK), graphene (G), poly(N-vinylcarbazole) -graphene (PVK-G), graphene oxide (GO), and poly(N-vinylcarbazole)-graphene oxide (PVK-GO) in order to impart antibacterial properties. The successful coatings of the membranes were demonstrated through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Investigations carried out on the surface-modified membrane filters using Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis showed that the presence of graphene-based nanomaterials significantly improved the antibacterial properties of the membrane filters. One of the mechanisms for this improved antimicrobial property of the filter was attributed to the production of reactive oxygen species by the nanomaterials. Among the nanomaterials used in this study, the PVK-GO-modified membrane filter exhibited the best removal of B. subtilis and E. coli with 4 and 3 log removals, respectively. The different levels of E. coli and B. subtilis removals were attributed to the differences in their cell structures and composition. This study has demonstrated that the use of graphene-based nanomaterials to modify the surfaces of membrane filters is an effective method of imparting antibacterial properties that can find useful application in water and wastewater treatment. © 2014 American Chemical Society.

Influence of Shape and Dimensions of Lamina on Shear and Bending Strength of Vertically Glue Laminated Bamboo Beam

The strength of the bamboo increases from innner surface layer (endodermis) to outer surface layer (exodermis). The strength of bamboo can be utilized optimally by making glue laminated bamboo beams. The curved bamboo lamina as part of the glue laminated beam may be made by peeling off slightly the outer surface layer that contains high strength of fibers. The lamina thickness is made by disposing inner layer of the bamboo. The bamboo used in this work belongs to the species of Bambusa Dendrocalamus asper (local name: bambu Petung). This research aims to improve the shear and flexural strength of the glue laminated bamboo beams by modifying the shape of the cross section of the lamina (curved) rather than ordinary rectangular shape of the lamina. The dimensions of the cross-section of the lamina were of 7/20 mm and 9/20 mm. The laminas were preserved by immersing them in a hot water having chemical solution namely “Natrium Tetrabonat or CCB4” with a concentration of 10%. Having dry air the laminas were glued using adhesive type PVAC and were staked under 2.5 MPa. The cross section dimensions of the beam specimen in shear and bending were of 70/100-900 mm and of 70/100-285 mm, and of 750 mm and 2700 mm long respectively. The simply supported glue laminated beams were tested upon two point loads at a distance of 1/3 the length of the span. The results showed that the glue laminated bamboo beams having curved type of laminas are stronger, more rigid, and more ductile compared to rectangular lamina type. Likewise, the glue laminated bamboo beams having 7 mm thick of lamina are stronger, stiffer, and ductile compared to the glue laminated beam with laminas of 9 mm thick. The interest of many research groups regarding manufacture of composite materials by using natural fibers is increasing world-wide. The main objectives involve the improvement of mechanical properties, mainly those related to resistance and elasticity. In the present study in a first stage, polymer concrete specimens were elaborated by using an unsaturated polyester resin, silica sand and luffa fibers; after, they were gamma irradiated at different doses and their mechanical properties were evaluated. Two different silica particle sizes (0.15 mm and 0.6 mm), and four different luffa fiber concentrations (0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2 wt%) were used, as well as 50 and 100 kGy of radiation dose. The results show a gradually diminution of compressive strength and modulus of elasticity when adding luffa fiber concentration. Nevertheless, such mechanical features are increasing when polymer concrete is gamma irradiated.

Studies have shown that the presence of people modify the dynamic behavior of structures due to the addition of mass to the structure and also due to the ability of the human body to absorb energy, acting on the structure as a dynamic system of the type mass-spring-damper and justifying their representation through biodynamic models. The effect that people cause on the structure becomes more pronounced when the mass of persons is significant in comparison to the mass of the structure, as in the case of temporary grandstands. These types of structures have the lowest stiffness in the transverse direction. Thus, this study aims to examine the effect that the presence of people causes on the dynamic response of a temporary grandstand in the transverse direction, focusing on changes of the natural frequencies. A prototype of a temporary grandstand was assembled in the laboratory, with a capacity of about one hundred people. Modal tests were performed, and a finite element (FE) model of the structure was developed using the software ANSYS. Experimental data and results of the FE model of the grandstand with 5, 8 and 12 people seated were correlated to calibrate a biodynamic model representing each spectator. Such a model was a single degree of freedom (SDOF) system, departing from a biodynamic model proposed in literature, which was adapted to the condition of people in grandstands. Investigations were then performed on the vibrating properties of the structure when it was gradually filled with models representing the spectators. The results show significant changes on the transverse natural frequency when compared to that of the empty structure, demonstrating the importance of considering the effect of people in temporary grandstands and its representation through biodynamic models.

In this work it was studied the influence of recycled fine aggregate obtained from construction and demolition waste (CDW) on the rheological properties of Portland cement mortars. The CDW was initially separate in their main constituents (mortar, ceramic and concrete debris) at the laboratory and then grinded separately to the sand size in order to generate more homogeneous fine aggregates. The characterization of the natural and recycled sands was carried out through physical tests, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and image analysis (shape and texture description parameters). A conventional mortar and three mortars containing recycled sands were produced with a sand/cement ratio of 4 and consistency index of 255±5 mm. The consistency was kept constant by ranging the water-cement ratio from 0.58 to 1.14. The rheological study was performed using a rotating viscometer to obtain torque-rotation ratio and to calculate the yield stress and plastic viscosity. The results indicate that the presence of recycled aggregate causes a lowering of both yield stress and plastic viscosity with respect to the mortar containing natural aggregate. © (2014) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

The theory of constraints thinking process, created by Israeli physicist Eliyahu M. Goldratt, has emerged as a tool for achieving competitive advantage. Many researches also focused on the application of lean thinking developed by Toyota and proposed by Ohno. This philosophy has been proven to be effective in several production processes. This paper aims to propose a method of problem solving through the integration of theory of constraints thinking process and the principles of lean production. As a tool for problem identification, the method defends the use of current reality tree and, to solve problems, the lean thinking tools, proposed by Picchi. The developed method was implemented in a contractor. The research methodology was research-action. Among the results, there was a realistic diagnosis about the core problems in company. According to this, the core problem of the contractor is “the lack of commitment of manpower” that results in the main problem “the financial loss”. The principle of perfection was verbalized as a proposal to solve the problems and the tools to be implemented for solving problems were “commitment of senior management to employees” and “simplicity in communication”.

Finite Element Modelling of Steel Beams with Web Openings

Height limitations are not uncommon in multi-storey buildings due to economic requirements and esthetical considerations. Substantial spaces are normally required to enable the passage of large pipes and ducts beneath steel beams leading to uneconomic floor heights. The most adopted solution for this issue is the use of steel beam web openings to provide the required space for services. These openings could lead to a significant decrease of the beam load carrying capacity depending on the adopted openings shape, size and location. These aspects motivated the present study based on FE simulations calibrated against numerical and test results. The results accuracy enabled a comprehensive parametric analysis of beams with web openings to be made focused on the profile size, web opening location, among others. The study also investigated the efficiency of longitudinal stiffeners welded at the opening region and benefits of using an adequate edge concordance radius in beams with rectangular and square openings. The obtained results showed the need of using welded longitudinal stiffeners in order to increase the beams ultimate load carrying capacity. This adoption can double or even triple the ultimate load of beams with rectangular and square opening heights equal to 0.75 H, respectively.

Biological invasion is one of the main threats to native biodiversity. For a species to become invasive, it must be voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into a nonnative habitat. Mammals were among first taxa to be introduced worldwide for game, meat, and labor, yet the number of species introduced in the Neotropics remains unknown. In this data set, we make available occurrence and abundance data on mammal species that (1) transposed a geographical barrier and (2) were voluntarily or involuntarily introduced by humans into the Neotropics. Our data set is composed of 73,738 historical and current georeferenced records on alien mammal species of which around 96% correspond to occurrence data on 77 species belonging to eight orders and 26 families. Data cover 26 continental countries in the Neotropics, ranging from Mexico and its frontier regions (southern Florida and coastal-central Florida in the southeast United States) to Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay, and the 13 countries of Caribbean islands. Our data set also includes neotropical species (e.g., Callithrix sp., Myocastor coypus, Nasua nasua) considered alien in particular areas of Neotropics. The most numerous species in terms of records are from Bos sp. (n = 37,782), Sus scrofa (n = 6,730), and Canis familiaris (n = 10,084);17 species were represented by only one record (e.g., Syncerus caffer, Cervus timorensis, Cervus unicolor, Canis latrans). Primates have the highest number of species in the data set (n = 20 species), partly because of uncertainties regarding taxonomic identification of the genera Callithrix, which includes the species Callithrix aurita, Callithrix flaviceps, Callithrix geoffroyi, Callithrix jacchus, Callithrix kuhlii, Callithrix penicillata, and their hybrids.
