The spatially differentiated environmental impacts and associated costs of technological improvement and circular agricultural practices in sugarcane production were assessed. Analysis of the cause-effect relationship between the key processes and substances each helped develop alternative scenarios for impact reduction. PM 2.5 emissions contributed to 92 % of the total human health impacts from open burning of field residues. Freshwater ecotoxicity, mainly due to ametryn emissions from pesticide application, contributed to 47 % of the total damage to the ecosystem. The environmental costs were 116 % higher than the value of sugarcane production, signifying the critical importance of adopting alternative pathways that provide economic benefits from environmental cost reduction compared to the production value. Scenarios considering green cane harvesting and waste management approaches demonstrated high potential for total impact reduction of 99 % and 97 %, respectively, and economic gains of 202 and 225 billion THB, respectively (5.76 and 6.42 billion USD, respectively). The economic benefits of waste utilization were 137 % higher than the value of sugarcane production, demonstrating the potential benefits of product substitution to help mitigate impacts. The core findings highlight the significance of the PM 2.5 impact-related external costs and underscore the benefits of adopting green cane harvesting in conjunction with on-field waste utilization to mitigate the impact of open burning and produce value-added products. Technological improvement and circular agricultural practices coupled with valuation of spatially differentiated impacts can provide useful and more accurate information to policymakers, to prioritize the implementation of mitigation strategies for enhancing the environmental sustainability of sugarcane production.

Electrochemical improvement of methane production via surface engineering of graphitic cathodes in anaerobic sequential batch reactors

Five anaerobic sequential batch reactors (SBR), SBR 1−SBR 5 run in parallel were examined for biogas output trends under varying hydraulic retention times (HRT). SBR 1 was run without biomass for 1 month to study electrode stability and the effect of applied potential on sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) degradation. Polyaniline (PANI/Graphite) modification in reactors SBR 4 and iron-coated PANI (Fe-PANI/Graphite) in SBR 5 increased biogas production by almost 2.5 times compared to SBR 2 without electrodes. SBR 3 equipped with unmodified graphite rods was used as a control for cathode modifications. By decreasing HRT, cumulative methane production increased to 280 and 320 mL at 72 h and 350 and 500 mL at 48 h. Compared to SBR 2, an electric field increased daily biogas production. Methane composition in SBR 5 increased from 44% at 96-h to 71% at 48-h HRT after 30 days. SBR 4 recovered within 7 days after HRT modifications reduced methane output. The methane yield increased significantly with electric current in SBR 3 (2.6 times), SBR 4 (5.4 times), and SBR 5 (7.4 times). The effluent total organic carbon was stabilized at 15 mg/L for SBR 2 and SBR 3 and improved to below 5 mg/L for SBR 4 and SBR 5 during reactor operation. SBR 5, equipped with an Fe-PANI/Graphite cathode showing the lowest charge transfer resistance, developed distinct microbial community structures in both anodic and cathodic biofilms, compared to the other electrically assisted SBRs.

Wastes from landfills originate from many spheres of life. These are produces as a result of human activities either domestically or industrially. The global plastic production increased over years due to the vast applications of plastics in many sectors. The continuous demand of plastics caused the plastic wastes accumulation in the landfill consumed a lot of spaces that contributed to the environmental. In addition, economic growth and development also increased our demand and dependency on plastics which leads to its accumulation in landfills imposing risk on human health, animals and cause environmental pollution problems such as ground water contamination, sanitary related issues, etc. The management and disposal of plastic waste have become a major concern, especially in developing cities. The idea of waste to energy recovery is one of the promising techniques used for managing the waste of plastic. The development of the world economy increases trade, thereby inducing a large amount of goods transportation. In many developing countries, such as Brazil, the transportation system is predominated by the highway mode. Municipal highways, most of time, are part of the main road cargo transportation system, and this makes the traffic of hazardous materials a risk to society and the environment. The goal of the paper is the use of a multi-criteria analysis methodology, for modeling of the environmental risk of Road Transport of Hazardous Materials (RTHM) in Sao Paulo State - Brazil. Therefore, a methodological discussion is presented to explore the issues inherent to the composition of the panel of experts to assign weights to each criterion and to quantify the relative importance of each for risk analysis of environmental damage. © 2014 American Society of civil Engineers.

The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between the internal curing effect of roof-tile waste aggregate and frost damage resistance, and to investigate the effects of the replacement ratio of roof-tile waste aggregate as well as curing conditions on the frost damage resistance of concrete. Five types of concrete using Portland blast-furnace slag cement were prepared with a water-to-cement ratio of 0.50 and different replacement ratios of roof-tile waste coarse aggregate (20% and 50% by volume) and roof-tile waste fine aggregate (23% and 58% by volume). Concrete specimens were cured at 20 °C under sealed condition for 3, 7, or 28 days, and they were subsequently exposed to air at 20 °C and 60%R.H. until the age of 28 days. Then, the tests for resistance of concrete to freezing and thawing were carried out for 300 cycles in water, and the relative dynamic modulus of elasticity as well as the mass loss was assessed at the designated periods. As a result, it was found that sufficient frost damage resistance could be secured when the replacement ratio of roof-tile waste aggregate was approximately 20% by volume, and the improvement in frost damage resistance was observed especially when fine aggregate was replaced. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In this paper, the design of austenitic stainless steel channel sections subjected to minor axis bending, specifically with tension in the web ("u" orientation) is analyzed. The values of moment resistance are predicted using Eurocode 3 criteria and the Continuous Strength Method (CSM), which are then compared with numerical models to assess effectiveness. The modeling is performed through ANSYS and calibrated with literature tests. It was found that Eurocode presents a considerable disparity in results, as well as an overly cautious response (on average, half the numerical load). The CSM reflects the performance more accurately but still with a certain level of conservatism (on average, around 35% lower). © 2024 Ernst & Sohn GmbH.

The frequency-time finite element model TEA-NL is used to investigate tidal propagation and circulation in the English Channel and the southern North Sea, in the context of the Tidal Flow Forum benchmark. Quality of TEA-NL simulations, relative to both field data and simulations by other numerical models is discussed. Sensitivity analyses are performed with regard to the effect on accuracy of bottom friction, and the effect on computational cost of the strategy used to harmonically decompose and iterate non-linear loading terms in the shallow water equations.

Molecular diffusion can transport ions from the leachate through a compacted soil barrier in landfills since it depends only on the concentration gradient. This mechanism is described by equations that depend on the effective diffusion coefficient in soils for each chemical element. Laboratory tests are necessary to estimate this coefficient, by testing a compacted soil layer subject to a contaminating solute, which results in curves of the variation of the concentration over time and along the soil thickness. The purpose of the paper is to apply the semi-analytical method called Equivalent Contaminated Layer Solution (ECL) for determining the diffusion and sorption coefficients for specific contaminants. It was adjusted a computational model that allows the calibration and visualization of diffusive tests in time and space, with a three-dimensional surface. The methodology was carried out using the software Wolfram Mathematica. The experimental data used were taken from previous studies. It was modelled the diffusion of chloride, chrome, cadmium, nickel and copper. The results of the models were validated for a hypothetical compacted clayey liner. The method applied allowed us to analyse the ion migration in compacted clayey liners from solid waste landfills. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Understanding the strength behavior and leaching characteristics of mining tailings stabilized with alkali-activated cements in the short, medium, and long term is crucial for the feasibility of material applications. In this context, this study assessed the stabilization/solidification of iron ore tailings (IOT) using alkali-activated binder (AAB) composed of sugarcane bagasse ash and eggshell lime at curing times of 7, 28, 60, 90, 180, and 365 days. Additionally, leaching tests were conducted, along with the examination of possible changes in the chemical and mineralogical composition resulting from exposure to acidic environments. Tests included unconfined compression strength (UCS), leaching, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy for the IOT-AAB mixtures. The highest increase in UCS was observed between 7 and 60 days, reaching 6.47 MPa, with minimal variation thereafter. The AAB-bonded IOT exhibited no metal toxicity over time. Elements Ba, Mn, Pb, and Zn present in IOT and ash were encapsulated in the cemented matrix, with complete encapsulation of all metals observed from 90 days of curing time. The mineralogy of the stabilized/solidified tailings showed no changes resulting from leaching tests. Characteristic bands associated with the presence of N-A-S–H gel were identified in both pre-leaching and post-leaching samples for all curing times analyzed. Exposure to acidic environments altered bands related to carbonate bonds formed in the IOT-AAB mixture. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.
