In this study, a novel Dynamic Directional Amplifier, namely the DDA, is implemented in an experimental scaled phononic set-up that is constructed using LEGO® technical components. Experimental testing is undertaken as a feasibility assessment of the concept and results indicate the low-frequency wave attenuation properties of the structure. © 2023 Proceedings of the International Congress on Sound and Vibration. Preceding vehicle identification is crucial for establishing cooperative platooning. This paper presents the development of a prototype preceding vehicle identification system (PVIS) and its field evaluation for the assessment of commercial viability. We designed and assembled a prototype consisting of a processing unit (Jetson Nano board), a communication device (Wi-Fi dongle), a GPS unit, and a distance measurement sensor (Terabee sensor). The Jetson Nano integrates the SparkFun GPS-RTK-SMA unit, the Terabee time-of-flight sensor, and the Wi-Fi dongle. The PVIS prototype in the ego vehicle measures the distance to its preceding vehicle and receives the GPS data from potential preceding vehicles with the PVIS prototypes. With these, the PVIS in the ego vehicle determines the connectivity of the preceding vehicle. The field evaluation results showed that the prototype PVIS works as designed, and each successful identification takes about 5.3 seconds. However, it was found that the Terabee (time of flight) sensor, at times, did not properly measure distances, likely due to an angle issue caused by the roadway surface and vibration of the vehicle. During driving, drivers must interact with various objects in the highly dynamic driving environment, in which they need to perceive the traffic hazards and handle safety-critical scenarios. Previous studies have proved the importance of drivers' hazard perception skills and designed corresponding driver training programs. However, due to the lack of a suitable taxonomy for hazards, most driver training programs on hazard perception are simply a collection of various hazardous scenarios but do not guide drivers' hazard perception skills in a systematic way. The existing taxonomies of hazards were mainly based on the characteristics of hazards but did not take the hazard perception procedures into consideration, which can hardly be applied to improve drivers' hazard perception skills. Therefore, in this study, we proposed a taxonomy of traffic hazards based on an analysis of hazard perception procedures. Overall, a four-element taxonomy of traffic hazards (i.e., CH-LSTTM) was proposed, in which the Cues (single-element-based, multiple-element-based, and no-element-based), Hazards (visible vs. invisible), Link Strength (LS, which accounts for the uncertainty between the cues and the hazards during the hazard development process), and Time to Materialization (TTM, which indicates the imminence level of the hazard) were considered. We demonstrated the capability of the proposed taxonomy in depicting and categorizing realworld traffic hazards through a naturalistic driving case study. The proposed taxonomy can support the optimization of driver training programs to improve their hazard perception skills. © 2024 IEEE.

Pipelines are the critical component of energy infrastructure for safely transporting large volumes of oil and hazardous materials over long distances. However, many incidents occurred over the years, leading to shutdowns, disruptions, and economic losses. The Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) maintains those incidents' reports, constituting a valuable resource for better understanding the underlying associations between those incidents' causes and shutdown durations. Most previous studies investigating incident databases are focused on bivariate statistical analyses between cause and effect variables, providing little to no insight into their associations. Also, little research has examined the level of disruptions caused by an incident. This study proposes a novel application of association rule mining to the PHMSA database to extract associations and insights between causal factors, background factors (e.g., materials), and their effects, particularly shutdown duration in this study. The results are expected to help improve pipeline infrastructure's planning, design, and operations. © ASCE *** rights reserved.

Constructing Balanced Datasets for Predicting Failure Modes in Structural systems Under Seismic Hazards

Accurate prediction of structural failure modes under seismic excitations is essential for seismic risk and resilience assessment. Traditional simulation-based approaches often result in imbalanced datasets dominated by non-failure or frequently observed failure scenarios, limiting the effectiveness in machine learning-based prediction. To address this challenge, this study proposes a framework for constructing balanced datasets that include distinct failure modes. The framework consists of three key steps. First, critical ground motion features (GMFs) are identified to effectively represent ground motion time histories. Second, an adaptive algorithm is employed to estimate the probability densities of various failure domains in the space of critical GMFs and structural parameters. Third, samples generated from these probability densities are transformed into ground motion time histories by using a scaling factor optimization process. A balanced dataset is constructed by performing nonlinear response history analyses on structural systems with parameters matching the generated samples, subjected to corresponding transformed ground motion time histories. Deep neural network models are trained on balanced and imbalanced datasets to highlight the importance of dataset balancing. To further evaluate the framework’s applicability, numerical investigations are conducted using two different structural models subjected to recorded and synthetic ground motions. The results demonstrate the framework’s robustness and effectiveness in addressing dataset imbalance and improving machine learning performance in seismic failure mode prediction. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

This paper presents the methodology and results of cradle-To-gate life cycle assessments (LCAs) performed for full-scale, root-inspired ground anchor (RIGA) prototypes, and conventional straight-shaft ground anchors (CGAs). LCAs performed in this study quantified the total environmental emissions of each ground anchor system in lb CO2e emissions per anchor installed, for anchors anticipated to have equivalent ultimate capacities. Based on preliminary load-displacement pullout test results, comparison is made between a temporary 55-foot long CGA and a 38-foot-long RIGA. The CGA is estimated to emit 942 lb CO2e, while the RIGA is estimated to emit 703 lb CO2e per anchor, a 25% reduction. Material savings of 191 lb of cement and 28 lb of ferrous products per anchor are also expected. The deployment of Energy Communities can help to increase the provision of sustainable energy from renewable energy sources at urban, industrial, and commercial levels, granting benefits to all the community members. Their effective integration in the form of microgrids (and nanogrids) will undoubtedly help to decarbonize the energy sector and, at the same time, increase energy resiliency. The main purpose of this book is to provide a systematic framework for the calculation of the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOEn) for Energy Communities proposing a general formulation and its application to three representative real case studies. To the authors’ knowledge, the existing literature does not address this issue yet. This book is intended for researchers, academics and postgraduate students in energy engineering and economics, promoters of energy projects, policymakers and, in general, for anyone interested in energy sustainability and renewable energy integration. Review of Urban Heat Island and Building Energy Modeling Approaches

In this paper, a review of the current literature in modeling urban heat island (UHI) phenomena including its main causes and effects is summarized. The main goal of the review is to assess the current modeling capabilities to accurately determine the impacts of UHI on outdoor comfort levels and urban building energy demands. In particular, the analysis techniques and modeling approaches are overviewed to estimate the mutual thermal interactions between urban atmosphere and buildings. In addition, the applications and the limitations of various modeling methods are discussed to predict outdoor thermal comfort and urban building energy consumption. The specific capabilities of the reviewed modeling approaches are highlighted to assess the effectiveness of mitigation strategies of the UHI effects. As part of the review analysis, recommendations are outlined to improve current modeling approaches to predict more accurately the impacts of UHI phenomena on urban building energy performance. This paper introduces a toolbox for generating virtual trajectories, which we call VT-tools v1.0, to address challenges in analyzing large but imperfect trajectory datasets. VT-tools v1.0 is able to generate virtual trajectories from large raw datasets that are typically challenging to process due to their size. We also provide a set of these virtual trajectories resulting from I–24 MOTION INCEPTION v1.0 data and demonstrate the practical utility of these trajectories in as-sessing speed variability and travel times across different lanes within the INCEPTION dataset. The virtual trajectory toolbox opens future research on traffic waves and their impact on energy. The VT-tools v1.0 Python implementation and sample data are publicly available at https://***.
