Integrating On-demand Ride-sharing with Mass Transit at-Scale

We are in the midst of a technology-driven transformation of the urban mobility landscape. However, unfortunately these new innovations are still dominated by car-centric personal mobility, which leads to concerns such as environmental sustainability, congestion, and equity. On the other hand, mass transit provides a means to move large amounts of travelers very efficiently, but is not very versatile and depends on an adequate concentration of demand. In this context, our overarching goal is to explore opportunities for new technologies such as ride-sharing to integrate with mass transit and provide a better service. More specifically, we envision a hybrid system that uses on-demand shuttles in conjunction with mass transit to move passengers efficiently, and provide an algorithmic framework for operational optimization. Our approach extends a state-of-the-art trip-vehicle assignment model to the multi-modal setting, where we develop a new integer-linear programming formulation to solve the problem efficiently. A comprehensive study covering five major cities in the United States based on real-world data is carried out to verify the advantages of such a system and the effectiveness of our algorithms. We show that our hybrid system provides significant improvements in comparison to a purely on-demand model by exploiting the efficiencies of the mass transit system. © 2024, CC BY.

Smart cities seek to leverage data from advanced information, communication, and sensor technologies (ICSTs) for achieving their transportation-related sustainability goals. However, the multi-source, multi-timescale nature of these disparate data sets introduces many challenges to community decision-makers, hindering the use of these technologies in an efficient, effective, and holistic manner. Here, using statistical and machine learning methods, we present a visualization platform developed for the City of Peachtree Corners, GA, comprising nine integrated data sets. This platform can capture dynamic interactions between data from different sources and has the potential to support decision-makers in developing different solution options for contemporary transportation-related problems in a smart city environment.

Disputes over cost allocation can present a significant barrier to investment in shared infrastructure. While it may be desirable to allocate cost in a way that corresponds to expected benefits, investments in long-lived projects are made under conditions of substantial uncertainty. In the context of electricity transmission, uncertainty combined with the inherent complexity of power systems analysis prevents the calculation of an estimated distribution of benefits that is agreeable to all participants. To analyze aspects of the cost allocation problem, we construct a model for transmission and generation expansion planning under uncertainty, enabling the identification of transmission investments as well as the calculation of benefits for users of the network. Numerical tests confirm the potential for realized benefits at the participant level to differ significantly from ex ante estimates. Based on the model and numerical tests we discuss several issues, including 1) establishing a valid counterfactual against which to measure benefits, 2) allocating cost to new and incumbent generators vs. solely allocating to loads, 3) calculating benefits at the portfolio vs. the individual project level, 4) identifying losers in a surplus-enhancing transmission expansion, and 5) quantifying the divergence between cost allocation decisions made ex ante and benefits realized ex post. © 2024, The Authors. Landslides are one of the major global geohazards, contributing to significant economic and social losses to private and public properties. In this paper, we deployed a Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) interrogator to measure soil movement and identify the soil movement location. The method was analyzed experimentally, detecting the soil movement location at around 935 m to 955 m of fiber. In addition, the system's sensitivity was analyzed for soil movement within the displacement range of 0 mm to 4 0 mm, with increments of 5 mm. The experimental result shows that the frequency shift of 1.66 MHz corresponds to 1 mm, and the tensile strain of 31.4 μϵ corresponds to 1 mm. Moreover, the high reliability of measurement accuracy, demonstrated by an average of nine measurements with an error of 2.76 MHz, further supports the effectiveness of the system for detecting and monitoring soil movement in real-world applications. © 2024 IEEE.

In today's world, technology is booming, and people are more aware of how their actions affect the environment. One big change we are seeing is the rise of electric vehicles (EVs). The surge in EV adoption necessitates efficient and fast EV charging stations, but challenges such as extended charging times, limited facilities, and their impact on power systems must be addressed. This paper proposes an optimized pricing model, considering the integrated operation of the transportation network and the power distribution system. This model accounts for both competitive and non-competitive charging demand. The proposed model can effectively reduce peak demand, ensure power system stability, increase EV charging station profit and decrease EV users' waiting time for charging.

Understanding the nature of traffic heterogeneity is of major importance, given the widespread adoption of micromobility in cities. Based on massive field data and a nonequilibrium model, we demonstrate that heterogeneous, multispecies traffic is a member of an inherently nonequilibrium universality class associated with porous flows, namely directed percolation (DP) in one spatial dimension. Our central finding is that, macroscopically, multispecies traffic behaves like water percolating through a porous medium. This hypothesis remained unresolved for years mainly due to the incompatibility of equilibrium approaches with phenomena that are quite far from equilibrium and the limited resonance of complexity theory in the transportation literature. DP entails the existence of a nontrivial phase transition from a disordered subcritical phase to an ordered supercritical phase that depends on a temperature-like control parameter and is governed by a universal power-law. Our model explains the large scatter found in experimental data by taking into account the nonlinear, stochastic perturbations present in multispecies traffic configurations due to coupling of a predominantly lane-based host system with a layer of lane-free parasitic flows. © 2025, CC BY.

Bauxite residue (i.e., red mud) is a highly alkaline and an abundant solid waste with a complex chemical composition. We recently showed that the desilication product (DSP) of red mud can be converted to amorphous products with polymerized tetrahedral and octahedral sheets following a simple, low-temperature, aqueous process. This study characterizes the synthesized products based on water vapor sorption behavior, sorption capacity, and post-transition (i.e., transition from adsorption to condensation) water content, compares the results with that of natural clayey soils (including two bentonites, one kaolinite, and thirteen natural clays with a range of surface properties) and polymeric materials (including one commercial polyacrylamide, one polymer used in geosynthetic clay liners, one biopolymer used in soil improvement, and one biofilm), and discusses the potential of using the synthesized products in soil improvement. The sorption capacity of synthesized products fell between that of bentonite and kaolinite and the post-transition water content of the synthesized products fell between clayey soils and polymers. The results indicated that the synthesized products show water retention characteristics of polymers, but a strong hydrogel structure is not achieved upon wetting, unlike the synthetic polymers. The synthesized products improved the unconfined compressive strength of fine sand by 17 kPa, which showed promise to be used in mechanical soil improvement applications. © ASCE.

Neural Operators for Stochastic Modeling of Nonlinear Structural System Response to Natural Hazards

Traditionally, neural networks have been employed to learn the mapping between finite-dimensional Euclidean spaces. However, recent research has opened up new horizons, focusing on the utilization of deep neural networks to learn operators capable of mapping infinite-dimensional function spaces. In this work, we employ two state-of-the-art neural operators, the deep operator network (DeepONet) and the Fourier neural operator (FNO) for the prediction of the nonlinear time history response of structural systems exposed to natural hazards, such as earthquakes and wind. Specifically, we propose two architectures, a self-adaptive FNO and a Fast Fourier Transform-based DeepONet (DeepFNOnet), where we employ a FNO beyond the DeepONet to learn the discrepancy between the ground truth and the solution predicted by the DeepONet. To demonstrate the efficiency and applicability of the architectures, two problems are considered. In the first, we use the proposed model to predict the seismic nonlinear dynamic response of a six-story shear building subject to stochastic ground motions. In the second problem, we employ the operators to predict the wind-induced nonlinear dynamic response of a high-rise building while explicitly accounting for the stochastic nature of the wind excitation. In both cases, the trained metamodels achieve high accuracy while being orders of magnitude faster than their corresponding high-fidelity models. © 2025, CC BY.

Automated vehicle technologies offer a promising avenue for enhancing traffic efficiency, safety, and energy consumption. Among these, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) systems stand out as a prevalent form of automation on today’s roads, with their time gap settings holding paramount importance. While decreasing the average time headway tends to enhance traffic capacity, it simultaneously raises concerns regarding safety and string stability. This study introduces a novel variable time gap feedback control policy aimed at striking a balance between maintaining a minimum time gap setting under equilibrium car-following conditions, thereby improving traffic capacity, while ensuring string stability to mitigate disturbances away from the equilibrium flow. Leveraging nonlinear H∞ control technique, the strategy employs a variable time gap component as the manipulated control signal, complemented by a constant time gap component that predominates during car-following equilibrium. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is evaluated against its constant time-gap counterpart calibrated using field platoon data from the OpenACC dataset. Through numerical and traffic simulations, our findings illustrate that the proposed algorithm effectively dampens perturbations within vehicle platoons, leading to a more efficient and safer mixed traffic flow. © 2024, CC BY.
