The current research set out to find out how different kinds of collaborative training affected students' ability to make socioscientific decisions and their metacognitive abilities in a science classroom setting. Both presenting socioscientific issues and proposing and evaluating solutions to such difficulties are part of socioscientific decision making. We looked at two different collaborative training techniques that were built using the IMPROVE method and had different embedded metacognitive instructions. Three hundred and thirty-five seniors from three different high schools participated: one in a traditional collaborative learning context (COLED), another in which metacognitive questions were embedded (COLED+EMB), and a control group that did not receive any kind of intervention. On both aspects of socioscientific decision making, the results show that students in the two training circumstances fared better than students in the control group. Students in the COLED+EMB condition were not more successful than those in the COLED condition, nevertheless. All conditions showed an improvement in students' learning outcomes on the regulatory component of metacognition over time. The posttest results showed that students in the COLED+EMB condition performed the best on average, but these findings were not statistically significant. The discussion centres on the potential consequences of incorporating metacognitive instruction into scientific courses. © 2024 IEEE.

Transmission Benefits and Cost Allocation under Ambiguity

Disputes over cost allocation can present a significant barrier to investment in shared infrastructure. While it may be desirable to allocate cost in a way that corresponds to expected benefits, investments in long-lived projects are made under conditions of substantial uncertainty. In the context of electricity transmission, uncertainty combined with the inherent complexity of power systems analysis prevents the calculation of an estimated distribution of benefits that is agreeable to all participants. To analyze aspects of the cost allocation problem, we construct a model for transmission and generation expansion planning under uncertainty, enabling the identification of transmission investments as well as the calculation of benefits for users of the network. Numerical tests confirm the potential for realized benefits at the participant level to differ significantly from ex ante estimates. Based on the model and numerical tests we discuss several issues, including 1) establishing a valid counterfactual against which to measure benefits, 2) allocating cost to new and incumbent generators vs. solely allocating to loads, 3) calculating benefits at the portfolio vs. the individual project level, 4) identifying losers in a surplus-enhancing transmission expansion, and 5) quantifying the divergence between cost allocation decisions made ex ante and benefits realized ex post. In Japan, the determination of support patterns (CI, CII, DI, DII) in NATM tunnels plays an important role in the construction of mountain tunnels. Conventional methods of rock mass evaluation include grading the rock by experienced experts with a point-based system in 9 criteria as regulated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). However, discrepancy in judgement by these experts based on field experiences and subjective standards means that the current method of evaluation is ambiguous. Therefore, this research proposes a standardized evaluation method by verifying the applicability of machine learning to rock surface evaluation. Support vector machine (SVM) is implemented to build the model for the classification of four support patterns based on data collected from different tunnel construction sites. As a result, the proposed model has shown high accuracy. Furthermore, by taking into account the current system of evaluation of the tunnel cutting face, the classification accuracy significantly improved. Thus, the proposed model has shown strong candidacy as a standardized evaluation method. © 2022 ARMA, American Rock Mechanics Association.

Fundamental Study on Impacts of Steel Fibers on Rebar Corrosion at a Crack of Steel Fiber Reinforced Concrete

Experimental studies were conducted to clarify mechanisms of corrosion inhibition of rebar by steel fibers in steel fiber reinforced concrete, SFRC. Test specimens with an artificial crack were made from concrete and SFRC, and steel fibers were arranged in the crack for some of concrete specimens. Specimens were exposure under wet-dry cycle and salt water were poured through the artificial crack when wet condition. After prescribed cycles, rebar corrosion was evaluated and impacts of steel fibers on that were discussed. As the results, it was confirmed that steel fibers inhibited the rebar corrosion, and its effect was appeared when fibers existed in the artificial crack mostly. The corrosion inhibition was shown for large crack specimens as well as small crack ones. An electrochemical factor due to corrosion of steel fibers themselves was supposed as main mechanisms of corrosion inhibition from the experimental results. ©2023 The Society of Materials Science, Japan.

Location-Based Service (LBS) Data Quality Metrics and Effects on Mobility Inference

Today, GPS-equipped mobile devices are ubiquitous, and they generate Location-Based Service (LBS) data, which has become a critical resource for understanding human mobility. However, inherent limitations in LBS datasets, primarily characterized by discontinuity and sparsity, may introduce significant biases in representing individual movement patterns. This study develops data quality metrics for LBS data, examines their disparities among different populations, and quantifies their effects on inferred individual movement, stays in particular, in the Boston Metropolitan Area. We find that data from higher-income, more educated, and predominantly white census block groups (CBGs) show higher sampling rates but paradoxically lower data quality. This contradiction may stem from greater privacy awareness in these communities. Additionally, we propose a new framework to resample LBS data and quantitatively evaluate the inferential biases associated with data of varying quality. This versatile framework can analyze the impacts originating from different data processing workflows with LBS data. Using linear regression models with clustered standard error, we assess the impact of data quality metrics on inferring the number of stay points. The results show that better data quality, characterized by the number of observations and temporal occupancy, can significantly reduce the bias when calculating the stay points of an individual. The introduction of additional data quality metrics into the regression model can further explain the bias. Overall, this study provides insights into how data quality can influence our understanding of human mobility patterns, highlighting the importance of carefully handling LBS data in research. © 2024, CC BY.

Water security in arid and semi-arid Middle Eastern climates has been severely impacted by effects of climate change such as reduced precipitation, diminished storage, increased evapotranspiration, and prolonged heat waves. These climate effects are compounded in Iraq, where populations, agriculture, industry, and energy rely heavily on varying transboundary water flows to meet water demands. Iraq’s most profitable sector, energy, is especially threatened by insufficient water supply, which complicates government decision making in energy infrastructure development. The goal of this paper is to develop a scenario-based multi-criteria analysis framework to prioritize infrastructure investments in the context of climate change and scarcity of natural resources. Infrastructure facilities are evaluated against social, economic, climate, and hydrologic criteria across a set of disruptive climatological, economic, and social scenarios to identify robust initiatives and the most and least disruptive scenarios to the system. A particular innovation of this paper is the evaluation of hydrology data derived from satellites in determining water scarcity impact on individual energy facilities. The methods are demonstrated for a critical sector of Iraq’s economy: oil and natural gas. The demonstration includes 13 system-order criteria, 44 oil and gas initiatives within Iraq, and seven risk scenarios. The results include an accounting of the most and least disruptive scenarios to energy sector priorities and scenario-based system orderings to guide stakeholders in investment prioritization. © The Author(s) 2024.

Buyer-driven commodity chains are characterized by commercial relationships between buyers and sellers that may obscure accountability due to complexity, thereby undermining sustainability efforts. Conventional methods to trace production, including ineffective human-led audits, risk reorienting global corporate governance towards the interests of private business and away from social benefit by limiting the role of objective data in the process. This study examines the relevant features of private, permissioned blockchain towards harnessing the transparency challenge by demonstrating the efficacy of our proposed framework against a simulation of a real-world multi-tier apparel supply chain. The simulation integrates a set of functional and operational requirements achieved through a combination of programmable smart contracts and underlying blockchain architecture. We then evaluate the framework both qualitatively and quantitatively before discussing the limitations of our work.

Concrete-filled steel deck floors are the most commonly used diaphragm system in steel buildings. While a considerable amount of testing has been performed on bare steel deck diaphragms, a limited amount of data exists on concrete-filled steel deck floor diaphragms subjected to cyclic loads. As part of a testing program at Virginia Tech, a total of eight cantilever diaphragm tests were performed on diaphragm specimens that were 5.2 m by 4.1 m with varied parameters such as deck height, total concrete thickness, concrete type (lightweight and normal weight), layout of headed shear studs, and reinforcement. Three of the specimens included reinforcing steel: two with reinforcing bars and one with welded wire mesh. The goal of this paper is to investigate strength predictions for these concrete-filled steel deck diaphragms with varying types of steel reinforcement. A prediction model for the shear strength of concrete-filled steel deck diaphragms was proposed and validated using the results of this experimental program, as well as the results of a testing program performed at Iowa State University. © 2023 Ernst & Sohn GmbH.

Off-Policy Evaluation for Sequential Persuasion Process with Unobserved Confounding

In this paper, we expand the Bayesian persuasion framework to account for unobserved confounding variables in sender-receiver interactions. While traditional models typically assume that belief updates follow Bayesian principles, real-world scenarios often involve hidden variables that impact the receiver’s belief formation and decision-making. We conceptualize this as a sequential decision-making problem, where the sender and receiver interact over multiple rounds. In each round, the sender communicates with the receiver, who also interacts with the environment. Crucially, the receiver’s belief update is affected by an unobserved confounding variable. By reformulating this scenario as a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP), we capture the sender’s incomplete information regarding both the dynamics of the receiver’s beliefs and the unobserved confounder. We prove that finding an optimal observation-based policy in this POMDP is equivalent to solving for an optimal signaling strategy in the original persuasion framework. Furthermore, we demonstrate how this reformulation facilitates the application of proximal learning for off-policy evaluation (OPE) in the persuasion process. This advancement enables the sender to evaluate alternative signaling strategies using only observational data from a behavioral policy, thus eliminating the necessity for costly new experiments. The global and national spending on public infrastructure projects continues to increase tremendously. Accordingly, contractors need to adopt efficient bidding strategies to cope with the legal requirement of competitive bidding within the public infrastructure projects. Moreover, contractors usually acquire the services of subcontractors to handle large projects. However, despite the previous research efforts on developing bidding models, there is still a lack of research that tackles the multi-stage construction bidding, where subcontractors submit quotations/bids first and general contractors bid second for the whole project. As such, this paper aims to develop a game-theoretic bidding model for multi-stage construction bidding. To this end, the authors utilized an interrelated methodology comprised of: (1) investigating existing bidding models that are based on a game theory approach;(2) deriving of a bid function for the multi-stage construction bidding following the low bid method where the lowest bidder is the winner;(3) simulating multi-stage bidding environment;and (4) validating the derived bid function and simulation model utilizing data of 808 US public infrastructure projects. Results indicate that the derived bid function gives general contractors a competitive advantage by reducing the occurrence and magnitude of earning negative profits (known as the winner's curse) while winning a reasonable number of projects;and hence, resulting in a higher expected profit. Ultimately, this study adds to the body of knowledge by providing a bidding model for the multi-stage construction bidding that shall aid contractors in dealing with the uncertainties within the associated decision-making process. © 2022 ASCE.
