Experimental and Reproduction Analysis on the Time-Dependent Characteristics of Strength and Deformation Properties of Polymer Concrete Subjected to Humid Environment

It is known that the bending strength of polymer concrete decreases with increasing the water content due to water penetration. Therefore, the structural performance of the polymer concrete product like a manhole under service condition should be evaluated considering time-dependent change in mechanical properties of the polymer concrete according to water ingress. This study experimentally clarifies how the compressive, tensile, bending strengths and stress-strain relationship of the polymer concrete subjected to water penetration changes over time by means of the systematic acceleration laboratory test. It was found that the time-dependent change of the water content and associated strength and stress-strain relationship of the polymer concrete specimens and can be numerically simulated by water penetration analysis based on a diffusion mode and the assumption of the correlation between the local water content and the mechanical properties. © 2025 The Society of Materials Science, Japan.

Smart cities seek to leverage data from advanced information, communication, and sensor technologies (ICSTs) for achieving their transportation-related sustainability goals. However, the multi-source, multi-timescale nature of these disparate data sets introduces many challenges to community decision-makers, hindering the use of these technologies in an efficient, effective, and holistic manner. Here, using statistical and machine learning methods, we present a visualization platform developed for the City of Peachtree Corners, GA, comprising nine integrated data sets. This platform can capture dynamic interactions between data from different sources and has the potential to support decision-makers in developing different solution options for contemporary transportation-related problems in a smart city environment. © 2023 IEEE.

Study of Test Method for Direct Tensile Strength of Polymer Concrete

A direct tensile strength test was developed to determine the tensile strength and tensile stress-strain relationship of polymer concrete. Referring to previous studies of direct tensile tests on cement concrete, the test method was developed by focusing on the method of transmitting tensile force from the testing machine to the specimen and the shape of the specimen. As a method of transmitting tensile force, a cylindrical specimen was inserted into a cylindrical jig and fixed by tightening a nut on the tightening ring with a torque wrench. Secondary bending was reduced by placing spherical seats at both ends of all threaded rods in the cylindrical jig. The specimen shape was a dog-bone-shaped cylindrical with a narrower diameter at the test section. It was confirmed that the fracture zone could be guided into the test section and that strain could be measured well in the test section. The tensile strength of the polymer concrete measured by the developed direct tensile test method was almost consistent with the split tensile strength. © 2025 The Society of Materials Science, Japan.

As electric vehicles (EVs) gain popularity, the demand for efficient EV routing and innovative charging solutions is increasing. This study proposes a novel integration of Temporal Multimodal Multivariate Learning (TMML) and the Time-Dependent Shortest Path (TDSP) algorithm to dynamically optimize EV routing while incorporating stationary and wireless charging systems. TMML continuously updates travel time distributions based on real-time observations, reducing uncertainties and enabling more accurate predictions. These updated distributions are utilized by TDSP to determine the most efficient routes, considering time-dependent travel times, and the availability of charging infrastructure. The methodology integrates Mobile Energy Distributors (MEDs) and Dynamic Inductive Charging (DIC). MED dynamically dispatches portable charging units, while DIC enables on-the-move charging through road-embedded systems. Real-world data from the Washington, DC metropolitan area, sourced from Regional Integrated Transportation Information System (***), provides granular insights into traffic patterns and charging infrastructure performance. This hybrid system operates by extracting feasible routes, evaluating them using TMML and TDSP, and selecting the optimal path to minimize travel time, waiting time, and charging costs. © 2025 IEEE.

The ISSMGE TC309/TC304/TC222 and ASCE Geo-Institute Risk Assessment Management Committee Fourth Machine Learning (ML) in Geotechnics Dialogue was held at the Okayama Convention Center on 5 December 2023. The dialogue focused on “machine learning supremacy projects”, which involve the use of novel ML techniques to analyse emerging data, potentially bringing disruptive value to transform research and practice. The discussions centred around four real-world projects covering tunnelling, pile foundations, and geophysical investigation, to showcase the latest developments and implementations of ML, exchange views on the associated technical and non-technical challenges, and explore further developments to transform practice on a broader scale. These projects highlight the need for efficient ML techniques to analyse large volumes of real-time data for 3D heterogeneous soil/rock domains, and the benefits of standardising data formats among practitioners and researchers. Meanwhile, as data become valuable assets, there is a need to establish guidelines or protocols to protect data privacy and ensure data trustworthiness while creating incentives for owners to share data. Several recommendations include (1) creating benchmark examples using real data and Class A prediction (i.e. prediction made before the event) exercises from real projects to accelerate research in ML methods and (2) involving regulators in future dialogue and exploring the incorporation of data-driven approaches in design codes to complement traditional methods. © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

The unsafe behavior of the construction workforce is one of the leading causes of accidents in the construction industry. It has been shown that construction laborers perceive the safety behavior of their co-workers and adjust their personal safety attitudes accordingly. Thus, there has been an increasing attention to studying the impacts of the social influence and norms on the safety behavior of construction workers. While existing studies examined the factors that influence the safety behavior of the construction workforce, there is little-to-no research that specifically focused on modeling the role of social influence on the safety behavior of the workers. This paper addresses this knowledge gap by modeling construction sites as a social interaction environment, where the construction workers often adopt the prevailing behavior of their neighbors. More specifically, this paper used agent-based modeling to simulate the safety behavior of the construction workforce based on a two-dimensional, two-state cellular automaton. Four different social influence rules that could impact the safety behavior of construction workers were considered and compared in the developed simulation model. The results showed that modeling the process of conforming to the safety behavior of the neighboring workers could lead to the formation of clusters of construction laborers having identical safety behavior. The paper also identified the most representative social rule that influences the safety behavior of construction workers. This paper adds to the body of knowledge by enabling contractors better understand the safety behavior of their workers and ultimately improve the safety performance in projects. © ASCE *** rights reserved.

This paper introduces an eco-friendly approach to developing cementitious materials using reclaimed cement obtained from demolished structures or disaster debris as a partial replacement for virgin cement, with a focus on the properties of the resulting cement paste. This innovative practice aims to reduce the demand for new cement in the building and construction industry, thereby contributing to a more sustainable and carbon-neutral built environment. Specimens with varying proportions of reclaimed cement, ranging from 0 to 20%, were prepared and analyzed for both fresh and hardened properties. The findings reveal that cement paste containing up to 20% reclaimed cement shows comparable performance to control specimens made solely with ordinary Portland cement (OPC), indicating their potential suitability for various built environment applications. © 2024 IABSE Symposium Manchester 2024: Construction's Role for a World in Emergency. Preliminary results of vibration serviceability evaluation of a new, modular steel floor framing system for commercial building structures are presented. The proposed system intends to increase the speed of construction by eliminating the placing of a concrete deck and thus reduce the time from conception to occupancy for steel building structures. The relatively lightweight floor system has been studied for vibration serviceability, and the results presented herein are a summary of the analytical research conducted before the experimental phase of the project. The analytical work presented in this study includes the vibration serviceability assessment per AISC Design Guide 11 (Vibrations of Steel-Framed Structural systems Due to Human Activity) and computational simulations using finite element software. © 2024, The Society for Experimental Mechanics, Inc.
