E-scooters have become a more dominant mode of transport in recent years. However, the rise in their usage has been accompanied by an increase in injuries, affecting the trust and perceived safety of both users and non-users. Artificial intelligence (AI), as a cutting-edge and widely applied technology, has demonstrated potential to enhance transportation safety, particularly in driver assistance systems. The integration of AI into e-scooters presents a promising approach to addressing these safety concerns. This study aims to explore the factors influencing individuals’ willingness to use AI-assisted e-scooters. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, capturing responses from 405 participants. The questionnaire gathered information on demographic characteristics, micromobility usage frequency, road users’ perception of safety around e-scooters, perceptions of safety in AI-enabled technology, trust in AI-enabled e-scooters, and involvement in e-scooter crash incidents. To examine the impact of demographic factors on participants’ preferences between AI-assisted and regular e-scooters, decision tree analysis is employed, indicating that ethnicity, income, and age significantly influence preferences. To analyze the impact of other factors on the willingness to use AI-enabled e-scooters, a full-scale Structural Equation Model (SEM) is applied, revealing that the perception of safety in AI enabled technology and the level of trust in AI-enabled e-scooters are the strongest predictors. © 2025, CC BY-NC-ND.

In higher education, student retention challenges and advancing student diversity are not new. Such institutional student retention challenges and student diversity promotions continue to require more focus and effort. A means to help address student retention and improve student diversity through faculty engagement in classrooms is inclusive pedagogy. In this study, we inform researchers and practitioners about the current state of inclusive pedagogical research, including gaps addressing further needs of inclusive pedagogical research from a multi-disciplinary perspective, including science, technology, engineering, education, math, humanities, management, and economics. We also share a non_STEM-Focused versus STEM-Focused inclusive pedagogy literature perspective. Using the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning (CIRTL) framework, we reviewed 304 articles to help shed light on existing inclusive pedagogy, focusing on three core competencies: inclusive communications, inclusive pedagogy practices, and the design of inclusive curriculum. Based on our discussion of findings and related implications for future research, we conclude that inclusive pedagogical research warrants improvement across all core competencies and academic disciplines to strengthen improvement of this research field. This study contributes to researchers and practitioners, especially those focusing inclusive pedagogy in classrooms, as well as the body of inclusive pedagogy knowledge. © This is a U.S. Government work and not under copyright protection in the US;foreign copyright protection may apply 2024.

Mobility Behaviors Shift Disparity in Flood Exposure in U.S. Population Groups

Current characterization of flood exposure is largely based on residential location of populations;however, location of residence only partially captures the extent to which populations are exposed to flood. An important, though yet under-recognized, aspect of flood exposure is associated with human mobility patterns and population visitation to places located in flood prone areas. This study analyzed large-scale, high-resolution location-intelligence data to characterize human mobility patterns and the resulting flood exposure in coastal counties of the United States. We developed the metric of mobility-based exposure based on dwell time in places located in the 100-year floodplain. The results of examining the extent of mobility-based flood exposure reveal a significant disparity across race, income, and education level groups. Black and Asian, economically disadvantaged, and undereducated populations are disproportionally exposed to flood due to their daily mobility activities, indicating a pattern contrary to residential flood exposure. The results suggest that mobility behaviors play an important role in extending flood exposure reach disproportionally among socio-demographic groups. Mobility-based flood exposure provides a new perspective regarding the extent to which floods could disrupt people’s life activities and enables a better characterization of disparity in populations’ exposure to flood hazards beyond their place of residence. © 2023, The Authors. Development of an arterial smart corridor digital twin requires the integration of real time data streams, data storage, and simulation model execution. This process may be complex, time consuming, and susceptible to errors. To aid in smart corridor digital twin development this paper seeks to provide a framework, best practices, and development guidance. As such, a three-tier incremental approach to smart corridor digital twin development is presented. The paper highlights practical issues in digital twin construction along with key data challenges based on experiences from the development of digital twins for two large Smart Corridor deployments, one in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and the other in Atlanta, Georgia. The presented three-tier incremental approach includes: 1) development of a prepopulated offline simulation, 2) development of a pseudo digital twin that is driven by archived data, and 3) integration of real time data streams to create the online digital twin model. The three-tiered approach facilitates conducting multiple trials and scenarios with increasing complexity, allowing for incremental error processing and updating of the digital twin.

The precast industry offers slab panels of different geometries according to the field conditions. These slab panels are popular in temporary constructions and beneficial in sustainability but have some financial limitations and local constraints. For a long time, the construction industry has used the arch action method, which restricts the stresses to the compression zone in concrete members and develops the required load-carrying capacity. For the same motives, industrial buildings have preferred semi-circular precast roofs, but the morphology was not suitable. For the proposed slab in this research, firstly, the typical industrial precast slab panel was doubled in width to minimize the time and efforts required for its casting, curing, and placement. Secondly, that doubled-in-width slab was provided with the arch action to confine the stresses to compression and benefit from the section entirely. Lastly, the top of the slab was kept flat to take advantage of the roof space. All these changes aimed for structural stability, reduced material's weight, improved load-carrying capacity, appropriate mobilization, and financial viability. A numerical approach and practical testing were adopted using the finite element modeling software, ABAQUS, to analyze load–deflection responses of both slabs through the concrete damage plasticity model. The proposed slab exhibited better performance as its capacity enhanced by about 1.5 times that of a typical slab. Although the volume of the material in the proposed slab increased slightly from 0.040 m³ to 0.045 m³, the reductions in joint filler materials, reinforcements, and efforts required for mixing and lifting machinery compensated for this increase significantly. Hence, the slab can be recommended for the industry to save the costs while taking heavier loads efficiently. © 2024 The Authors

Short-term traffic forecasting is an extensively studied topic in the field of intelligent transportation system. However, most existing forecasting systems are limited by the requirement of real-time probe vehicle data because of their formulation as a time series forecasting problem. Towards this issue, the NeurIPS 2022 Traffic4cast challenge is dedicated to predicting the citywide traffic states with publicly available sparse loop count data. This technical report introduces our second-place winning solution to the extended challenge of ETA prediction. We present a similarity-based feature extraction method using multiple nearest neighbor (NN) filters. Similarity-based features, static features, node flow features and combined features of segments are extracted for training the gradient boosting decision tree model. Experimental results on three cities (including London, Madrid and Melbourne) demonstrate the strong predictive performance of our approach, which outperforms a number of graph-neural-network-based solutions in the task of travel time estimation. The results of examining the extent of mobility-based flood exposure across demographic groups reveal a significant disparity across race, income, and education level groups. The results show that Black and Asian, economically disadvantaged, and undereducated populations in US coastal cities are disproportionally exposed to flood due to their daily mobility activities, indicating a pattern contrary to that of residential flood exposure. The results suggest that mobility behaviors play an important role in extending flood exposure reach disproportionally among different socio-demographic groups. The results highlight that urban flood risk assessments should not only focus on the level of flood exposure to residences, but also should consider mobility-based exposure to better learn the disparities in flood exposure among social groups. Mobility-based flood exposure provides a new perspective regarding the extent to which floods could disrupt people’s life activities and enable a better characterization of disparity in populations’ exposure to flood hazards beyond their place of residence. The Unscented Transform which is the basis of the Unscented Kalman Filter, UKF, is used here to develop a novel predictive controller for non-linear plants, called the Unscented Transform Controller, UTC. The UTC can be seen as the dual of the UKF, the same way as the LQG regulator and the Kalman Filter are related. The UTC is demonstrated on the control of complex maneuvers in free fall of a virtual skydiver the model of which was verified in wind tunnel and free fall experiments.

Understanding the complex and unique requirements of modular construction methods has become crucial given the ongoing increase in popularity of such construction methods. In fact, studying the various modular construction factors and their interconnections to attain successful project performance is perceived to help practitioners choose the modularization strategies that are more suitable for their specific context. To this end, there is a need to better understand the interconnectivities among the various modular construction decision-making factors. As such, the paper aims to enhance the knowledge of the interactions and interdependencies among the various modular construction decision-making factors. To achieve that, the authors identified 50 decision-making factors affecting the use of modular construction in the industry based on an extensive analysis of the literature. Second, a reference matrix reflecting the co-occurrence of the decision-factors in the literature is constructed. Third, spectral clustering algorithms are used to aggregate the decision-factors based on their interconnectivities. Fourth, social network analysis is used to determine the key interconnectivities and combinations of decision-factors in each cluster. The findings show that the 50 identified decision-factors can be categorized into four clusters where each cluster reflects particular interconnected aspects. This paper provides professionals with a proactive approach that enables them to identify interaction and dependencies between the different modular construction aspects. Autonomous driving is a highly anticipated approach toward eliminating roadway fatalities. At the same time, the bar for safety is both high and costly to verify. This work considers the role of remotely-located human operators supervising a fleet of autonomous vehicles (AVs) for safety. Such a ‘scalable supervision’ concept was previously proposed to bridge the gap between still-maturing autonomy technology and the pressure to begin commercial offerings of autonomous driving. The present article proposes DISCES, a framework for Data-Informed Safety-Critical Event Simulation, to investigate the practicality of this concept from a dynamic network loading standpoint. With a focus on the safety-critical context of AVs merging into mixed-autonomy traffic, vehicular arrival processes at 1,097 highway merge points are modeled using microscopic traffic reconstruction with historical data from interstates across three California counties. Combined with a queuing theoretic model, these results characterize the dynamic supervision requirements and thereby scalability of the teleoperation approach. Across all scenarios we find reductions in operator requirements greater than 99% as compared to in-vehicle supervisors for the time period analyzed. The work also demonstrates two methods for reducing these empirical supervision requirements: (i) the use of cooperative connected AVs — which are shown to produce an average 3.67 orders-of-magnitude system reliability improvement across the scenarios studied — and (ii) aggregation across larger regions.
