This comparative analysis offers valuable insights into both countries' ongoing development of disaster management systems and highlights potential areas for mutual learning and improvement in disaster risk reduction strategies. Controlled diesel-mixed soils for roadway embankments: laboratory and ultrasonic characterization

Soils contaminated with hydrocarbons is a repetitive site condition that may occur at locations adjacent to underground fuel tanks and other facilities. The main purpose of this study is to characterize and assess possibilities of reusing contaminated soil in useful applications such as roadway embankments. Accordingly, controlled amounts of diesel were mixed with clays and sands using percentages ranging from 0 to 13.5%. Unconfined compression, direct shear, California bearing ratio, and other tests were conducted on the diesel-mixed soil, along with the ultrasonic test. The ultrasonic test provided measures for the pulse wave velocity and received frequency, which was correlated with other soil parameters such as elastic modulus, resilient modulus, and California bearing ratio. From the main outcomes, it was found that small amounts of diesel can help improved soil shear strength. For instance, adding 5% diesel increased the soil cohesion by 63% and the unconfined compressive strength from 0.14 to 0.21 N/mm2. In sands, the California bearing ratio increased by almost double by adding 5% diesel, which is essential for roadway embankments especially in remote locations. Damping coefficient of soil was determined at different levels of diesel using the ultrasonic wave decay envelops. The ultrasonic waves were analyzed using fast Fourier transform to determine useful correlations between the wave frequency and the diesel content starting from 0 to 13.5%, and it was realized that an uncomplicated ultrasonic test can be acceptably used to assess static and dynamic properties of clean as well as contaminated soils.

Analysis of Farm Pond Detention and Disaster Prevention Potential and Activation Improvement Strategy

Given the increasing rate of climate change in recent years, this study investigated the flood detention capacity of traditional farm ponds. The HEC-HMS model was used to evaluate the farm ponds in the water catchment areas of Neili, Lunshan, Dapo, and the Anyexi and Chaoyong Rivers. The investigation also cooperated with detailed survey operations to screen 76 farm ponds for flood detention potential and to estimate their inflow. The peak reduction rate in the 50-year return period was determined to be 83%, and the peak delay time was determined to be 27%. The peak reduction rate has increased significantly, indicating that farm ponds offer considerable potential for flood detention and disaster prevention. They can be regarded as a possible solution for the general dispersal of flood runoff and for reducing the impact of future natural disasters. © 2022 Chinese Soil and Water Conservation Society. Experimental and numerical characterization of EPS using elastoplastic response in ABAQUS

Expanded polystyrene (EPS) is an attractive research area in the field of construction engineering. Its ultra-lightweight properties, high compressibility , and environmental-friendly characteristics make it ideal for the use as a compressible backfilling material for embankments, a filling material behind retaining walls and many other applications. Consequently, the compressive strength is one of the important properties for engineers. To this end, this paper aims to create a simplified elastoplastic model for the uniaxial unconfined compressive behavior of EPS. The developed model can predict the plastic stress–strain behavior of EPS using only its elastic modulus . A mathematical curve fitting model was developed by testing several 50 × 50 × 50 mm cube specimens under the test setup of a 50 kN uniaxial loading machine. Then, the proposed model was validated through the elastoplastic behavior in ABAQUS, by creating a finite element model for the described test setup. It was found that the proposed experimental test setup resulted in reasonable stress–strain behavior for EPS, similar to that indicated in the literature. Also, the presented mathematical model can accurately predict the stress–strain behavior of EPS, which was validated using the elastoplastic response in ABAQUS.

Finite element optimization of Pratt trusses using trial and error

Steel production is considered one of the most material and energy-consuming industries, and using less energy is considered vital to promote environmental sustainability. Steel is used as the main building material in the construction of factories, hangars, and workshops in the form of trusses. A truss system is a set of structural elements connected at pin joints , with different types, shapes, and weights. Optimizing truss systems for max strength and minimum weight is a sustainable approach to reducing steel production and promoting environmental sustainability. In this paper 27 Pratt trusses were optimized by trial and error using finite element analysis (FEM) to predict the optimum topology for various cross-sections. Correlations between the span length, cross-sectional area, and height of the trusses were developed to conclude the ideal topology of the Pratt truss that gives minimum compression and tension stresses. The effect of topology on the reaction forces was also addressed. Results showed that the optimum horizontal span length between joints ranged between 3.4 and 3.6 m for minimal compressive stresses and minimum horizontal and vertical reaction forces at supports, and from 3.0 to 3.6 m for minimal tensile stresses .

Recognizing wildfires as a multiscale planetary emergency, this paper describes a systems analysis of technology countermeasures, with special attention to Sicily, California, and several other regions. The paper describes a framework for systems integration of firefighting, satellites, fixed imaging, and aerial vehicles, with mathematical simulation and machine learning, to support both policy mitigations and responses to incidents. The approach includes (1) the characterization of the planetary emergency of wildfires, (2) early identification of dangerous wildfires and means for their control, and (3) reduction of risks to population centers in both rural and urban areas. Societal metrics of success include human health and safety, environment and ecology, critical food and industrial supply chains, geopolitical security, and others. Several technology and policy countermeasures of particular interest are regional fuel management, distributed sensors, computational intelligence, advanced firefighting materials, protocols, and automatic and semiautonomous responses, benefiting from the latest advancements in information technologies including artificial intelligence, machine learning, and others. © 2024 This work is made available under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license.

This study presents an Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) to evaluate the management strategies for Human-Orangutan Conflict (HOC) in Aceh, Indonesia. Utilizing an IPA Grid, the research categorizes various management strategies into four quadrants, each reflecting different levels of community-perceived importance and performance. Strategies like “Orangutan-Safe Fences” and “Community-Based Natural Resource management (CBNRM) for Orangutans” in Quadrant A are both important and performing well, underscoring the effectiveness of current efforts in these areas. Significantly, “Traditional Measures for Orangutan Deterrence,” which include non-harmful, traditional methods such as the use of specific noise deterrents, physical barriers, and community-led patrols to discourage orangutans from entering human areas, alongside “Quick Response program for Orangutan Incidents,” are placed in Quadrant B. In Quadrant C, “Strengthen Law Enforcement and Conservation Policies” are deemed less crucial and underperforming, suggesting a lower priority for immediate resource allocation. Lastly, Quadrant D includes well-performing but less critical strategies like “Early Warning Systems for Orangutan Presence” and “Raise Local Awareness About Orangutans,” pointing to potential over-investment. The study's findings advocate for a strategic reallocation of resources and highlight the importance of aligning conservation efforts with community priorities for effective and sustainable HOC management. © 2024 The Author(s)

This study examines the application of Ultra-High Performance Concrete (UHPC) in precast beam-column joints to improve structural performance. The studied joints included both adequately and inadequately reinforced conditions (strong and weak joints), constructed using UHPC and deformed rebars. The strong joints allowed the rebars to reach their yield strength under the design bending moment, effectively transferring loads and maintaining structural integrity during service conditions. These well-detailed joints exhibited ductile failure behavior, which is a desired characteristic in reinforced concrete design. In contrast, the weak joints experienced premature and brittle failures, underscoring the importance of proper detailing and reinforcement length. Finally, a practical design scheme was developed to determine the appropriate rebar lengths in UHPC connections to ensure structural integrity and safety. Overall, the integration of UHPC into precast concrete joints significantly enhanced bond performance, improved load transfer mechanisms, and contributed to more resilient and reliable construction practices. © 2025 The Authors

This study attempted to investigate the removal of biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), ammonia-nitrogen (NH4-N), and total phosphorus (TP) from secondary treated domestic wastewater using algal photo-bioreactor. A semi-pilot plant was constructed and operated for 112 days under continuous flow conditions at Zenin wastewater treatment plant, Giza, Egypt (WWTP) which consists of an algal photo-bioreactor with an effective volume of 188 litters and a lamella settler. The removal of the studied parameters was studied at different hydraulic retention times (HRTs) and mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) concentrations. A continuous illumination of the photo-bioreactor was maintained using sunlight in the morning and incandescent lamps at night. The best overall organic and nutrients removal efficiency was recorded at HRT of 16.1 hours. Artificial neural network (ANN) with a structure of 3-10-1 was used to predict the BOD, COD, TSS, NH4-N, and TP removal efficiencies. It was revealed that the ANN model adequately predicted the studied parameters removal efficiencies with r2 greater than 90%. © 2019 American Institute of Chemical Engineers. All rights reserved.
