Many applications in federated Grids have quality-of-service (QoS) constraints such as deadline. Admission control mechanisms assure QoS constraints of the applications by limiting the number of user requests accepted by a resource provider. However, in order to maximize their profit, resource owners are interested in accepting as many requests as possible. In these circumstances, the question that arises is: what is the effective number of requests that can be accepted by a resource provider in a way that the number of accepted external requests is maximized and, at the same time, QoS violations are minimized. In this paper, we answer this question in the context of a virtualized federated Grid environment, where each Grid serves requests from external users along with its local users and requests of local users have preemptive priority over external requests. We apply analytical queuing model to address this question. Additionally, we derive a preemption-aware admission control policy based on the proposed model. Simulation results under realistic working conditions indicate that the proposed policy improves the number of completed external requests (up to 25%). In terms of QoS violations, the 95% confidence interval of the average difference with other policies is between (14.79%, 18.56%).

cloud computing providers are now offering their unused resources for leasing in the spot market, which has been considered the first step towards a full-fledged market economy for computational resources. Spot instances are virtual machines (VMs) available at lower prices than their standard on-demand counterparts. These VMs will run for as long as the current price is lower than the maximum bid price users are willing to pay per hour. Spot instances have been increasingly used for executing compute-intensive applications. In spite of an apparent economical advantage, due to an intermittent nature of biddable resources, application execution times may be prolonged or they may not finish at all. This paper proposes a resource allocation strategy that addresses the problem of running compute-intensive jobs on a pool of intermittent virtual machines, while also aiming to run applications in a fast and economical way. To mitigate potential unavailability periods, a multifaceted fault-aware resource provisioning policy is proposed. Our solution employs price and runtime estimation mechanisms, as well as three fault-tolerance techniques, namely check pointing, task duplication and migration. We evaluate our strategies using trace-driven simulations, which take as input real price variation traces, as well as an application trace from the Parallel Workload Archive. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of executing applications on spot instances, respecting QoS constraints, despite occasional failures.

The integration of post-wimp computer interfaces arises as an alternative to meet individual limitations of each one, considering both interaction components and feedbacks to users. Tangible interfaces can present restrictions referring to physical space on tabletop architectures, which limits the manipulation of objects and deprecates the interactive process. Hence, this paper proposes the integration of techniques of mobile Augmented Reality with tabletop tangible architecture for blending real and virtual components on its surface, aiming to make the interactive process richer, seamless and more complete. © 2012 ACM.

Background: Size features such as lines of code and function points are deemed essential for effort estimation. No one questions under what conditions size features are actually a "must". Aim: To question the need for size features and to propose a method that compensates their absence. Method: A baseline analogy-based estimation method (1NN) and a state-of-the-art learner (CART) are run on reduced (with no size features) and full (with all features) versions of 13 SEE data sets. 1NN is augmented with a popularity-based pre-processor to create "pop1NN". The performance of pop1NN is compared to 1NN and CART using 10-way cross validation w.r.t. MMRE, MdMRE, MAR, PRED(25), MBRE, MIBRE, and MMER. Results: Without any pre-processor, removal of size features decreases the performance of 1NN and CART. For 11 out of 13 data sets, pop1NN removes the necessity of size features. pop1NN (using reduced data) has a comparable performance to CART (using full data). Conclusion: Size features are important and their use is endorsed. However, if there are insufficient means to collect software size metrics, then the use of methods like pop1NN may compensate for size metrics with only a small loss in estimation accuracy. MapReduce is currently an attractive model for data intensive application due to easy interface of programming, high scalability and fault tolerance capability. It is well suited for applications requiring processing large data with distributed processing resources such as web data analysis, bio informatics, and high performance computing area. There are many studies of job scheduling mechanism in shared cluster for MapReduce. However there is a need for scheduling workflow service composed of multiple MapReduce tasks with precedence dependency in multiple processing nodes. The contribution of this paper is proposing a scheduling mechanism for a workflow service containing multiple MapReduce jobs. The workflow application has precedence dependency constraints among multiple tasks, represented as directed acyclic graph (DAG). Also, for less data transfer cost in limited bisection bandwidth, data dependency criterion should be considered for scheduling multiple map-reduce jobs in a workflow. The proposed scheduling mechanism provides 1) scheduling MapReduce tasks regarding precedence constraints and 2) pre-data placement method considering data dependency constraints for saving data transfer cost over network.

The rotation matrix estimation problem is a keypoint for mobile robot localization, navigation, and control. Based on the quaternion theory and the epipolar geometry, an extended Kalman filter (EKF) algorithm is proposed to estimate the rotation matrix by using a single-axis gyroscope and the image points correspondence from a monocular camera. The experimental results show that the precision of mobile robot s yaw angle estimated by the proposed EKF algorithm is much better than the results given by the image-only and gyroscope-only method, which demonstrates that our method is a preferable way to estimate the rotation for the autonomous mobile robot applications.

The Self-Organizing Feature Map (or SOM), has been used to analyse a dataset consisting of oceanographic modelling output images, in order to identify patterns in the hydrodynamic behaviour of the south-east Tasmanian (SETas) coastal region over a 360-day period between August 2009 and August 2010. The SOM provided a visualization of the dataset, distributed across a 5x7 two- dimensional grid, which enabled an oceanographer to identify significant hydrodynamic patterns being exhibited by the SETas region over that period. Four prototype (typical) states were identified by the oceanographer, who then interpreted each of these states in terms of the major ocean currents which impact on the region, the East Australian Current and the Zeehan Current. These results indicate that SOM analysis can be a useful technique for identifying patterns in large oceanographic datasets, such as those now being provided by remote sensing, ocean modelling and marine sensor network technologies. © 2012 IEEE.
