System virtualization, which provides good isolation, is now widely used in server consolidation. Meanwhile, one of the hot topics in this field is to extend virtualization for embedded systems. However, current popular virtualization platforms do not support real-time operating systems such as embedded Linux well because the platform is not real-time aware, which will bring low-performance I/O and high scheduling latency. The goal of this paper is to optimize the Xen virtualization platform to be real-time operating system friendly. We improve two aspects of the Xen virtualization platform. First, we improve the xen scheduler to manage the scheduling latency and response time of the real-time operating system. Second, we import multiple real-time operating systems balancing method. Our experiment demonstrates that our enhancement to the Xen virtualization platform support real-time operating system well and the improvement to the real-time performance is about 20%. © 2010 IEEE.

Surveillance is a vital problem for harbor protection, border control or the security of other commercial facilities. It is particularly challenging to protect the vast near-coast sea surface and busy harbor areas from intrusions of unauthorized marine vessels, such as trespassing boats and ships. In this paper, we present an innovative solution for ship intrusion detection. Equipped with three-axis accelerometer sensors, we deploy an experimental wireless sensor network on the sea surface to detect ships. Using signal processing techniques and cooperative signal processing, we can detect the passing ships by distinguishing the ship-generated waves and the ocean waves. We design an intrusion detection system in which we propose to exploit spatial and temporal correlations of the intrusion to increase detection reliability. We conduct evaluations with real data collected by our initial experiments, and provide quantitative analysis on the detection system, such as the successful detection ratio and the estimation of the intruding ship velocity.

GPUs are many-core processors with tremendous computational power. However, as automatic parallelization has not been realized yet, developing high-performance parallel code for GPUs is still very challenging. The paper presents a novel translation framework designed for virtual execution environment based on CPU/GPU architecture. It addresses two major challenges of taking advantage of general purpose computation on graphics processing units (GPGPU) to improve performance: no rewriting the existing source code and resolving binary compatibility issues between different GPUs. The translation framework uses semi-automatic parallelization technology to port existing code to explicitly parallel programming models. It not only offers a mapping strategy from X86 platform to CUDA programming model, but also synchronizes the execution between the CPU and the GPUs. The input to our translation framework is parallelizable part of the program within binary code. With an additional information related to the parallelizable part, the translation framework transforms the sequential code into PTX code and execute it on GPUs. Experimental results on several programs from CUDA SDK Code Samples and Parboil Benchmark Suite show that our translation framework could achieve very high performance, even up to several tens of times speedup over the X86 native version. © 2010 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose an approach for significantly improving the performance of parallel matrix-matrix multiplication using a GPU-accelerated cluster. For one node, we implement a CPUs-GPU parallel double-precision general matrix-matrix multiplication (dgemm) operation and achieve a performance improvement of 32% as compared to the GPU-only case and 56% as compared to the CPUs-only case. For the entire cluster, we use the overlap GPU acceleration solution to high-performance Linpack (HPL), which eliminates the close dependency between the LU decomposition and the dgemm operation, and achieve a performance improvement of 17% as compared to the flat GPU acceleration case. © 2010 IEEE.

Key frame extraction methods aim to obtain a set of frames that can efficiently represent and summarize video contents and be reused in many video retrieval-related applications. An effective set of key frames, viewed as a high-quality summary of the video, should include the major objects and events of the video, and contain little redundancy and overlapped content. In this paper, a new key frame extraction method is presented, which not only is based on the traditional idea of clustering in the feature extraction phase but also effectively reduces redundant frames using the integration of local and global information in videos. Experimental results on the TRECVid 2007 test video dataset have demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed key frame extraction method in terms of the compression rate and retrieval precision. © 2010 IEEE.

With the growing importance of privacy in data access, much research has been done on the privacy protecting technology in recent years. Developing an access control model and related mechanisms to support a selective access data become important. The extensible markup language (XML) is rapidly emerging as the new standard language for semi-structured data representation and exchange on the Internet. And now more and more information is distributed in XML format. In this article, we present a comprehensive approach for privacy preserving access control based on the notion of purpose. In our model, purpose information associated with a given data elements in an XML document specifies the intended use of the data elements. An important issue addressed in this article is the granularity of data labeling for data elements in XML documents and tree databases with which purposes can be associated. We address this issue in XML databases and propose different labeling schemes for XML documents. We also propose an approach to represent purpose information to support access control based on purpose information. Our proposed solution relies on usage access control (UAC) models as well as the components which based on the notions of the purpose information used in subjects and objects. Finally, comparisons with related works are analysed. © 2010 IEEE.

A multimedia data management approach with GeM-Tree

In this paper, we propose a multimedia data management framework using GeM-Tree. GeM-Tree is a multidimensional tree-based index structure which provides a generalized framework to organize and retrieve images and videos seamlessly. In addition to supporting different multimedia data types and diverse representations, the proposed data management framework supports varied multimedia retrieval strategies like content-based image and video retrieval, mixed multimedia data retrieval where crosssimilarity between images and videos is considered, regionbased retrieval, etc. The framework embeds a high-level semantic relationship between multimedia data objects with a construct called Hierarchical Markov Model Mediator via a novel affinity promotion technique to improve query result relevance manifold. Extensive experiments were conducted with different multimedia data types possessing varied representations, different retrieval approaches, and different data sizes. The encouraging results demonstrate a potential solution to the important and complex issue of managing a large volume of multimedia data. © 2010 Academy Publisher.

In this paper, we propose a taxonomy that characterizes and classifies different components of autonomic application management in Grids. We also survey several representative Grid systems developed by various projects world-wide to demonstrate the comprehensiveness of the taxonomy. The taxonomy not only highlights the similarities and differences of state-of-the-art technologies utilized in autonomic application management from the perspective of Grid computing, but also identifies the areas that require further research initiatives.
