For research on conceptual design of the complex product, it is necessary that a reliable theory is found to decide if the design structure is suit for custom requirement. The correlation matrixes among requirements, functions and structures are proposed. A block diagonal matrix of correlation matrix between functions and structures is given. The mathematical models of multi-object optimization structure design are provided, and then calculated by the hybrid genetic algorithm. An example for solar energy automobile is given to show that this method is able to realize optimization structure design fitting for the requirements. In addition, the approaches can provide good Pareto optimization solutions.

Background: It has been apparent in the last few years that small non coding RNAs (ncRNA) play a very significant role in biological regulation. Among these microRNAs (miRNAs), 22-23 nucleotide small regulatory RNAs, have been a major object of study as these have been found to be involved in some basic biological processes. So far about 706 miRNAs have been identified in humans alone. However, it is expected that there may be many more miRNAs encoded in the human genome. In this report, a "context-sensitive" Hidden Markov Model (CSHMM) to represent miRNA structures has been proposed and tested extensively. We also demonstrate how this model can be used in conjunction with filters as an ab initio method for miRNA identification. Results: The probabilities of the CSHMM model were estimated using known human miRNA sequences. A classifier for miRNAs based on the likelihood score of this "trained" CSHMM was evaluated by: (a) cross-validation estimates using known human sequences, (b) predictions on a dataset of known miRNAs, and (c) prediction on a dataset of non coding RNAs. The CSHMM is compared with two recently developed methods, miPred and CID-miRNA. The results suggest that the CSHMM performs better than these methods. In addition, the CSHMM was used in a pipeline that includes filters that check for the presence of EST matches and the presence of Drosha cutting sites. This pipeline was used to scan and identify potential miRNAs from the human chromosome 19. It was also used to identify novel miRNAs from small RNA sequences of human normal leukocytes obtained by the Deep sequencing (Solexa) methodology. A total of 49 and 308 novel miRNAs were predicted from chromosome 19 and from the small RNA sequences respectively Conclusion: The results suggest that the CSHMM is likely to be a useful tool for miRNA discovery either for analysis of individual sequences or for genome scan. Efficient scheduling is a key concern for the effectual execution of performance driven Grid applications, such as workflows. Many list heuristics have been developed for scheduling workflows in centralized Grid environment. However, in this paper, we present a distributed list heuristic for decentralized scheduling of workflow applications in global Grids. The simulation results show that the proposed scheduling approach is scalable with respect to increased workload on the system. © 2009 IEEE.

In this paper, a reputation-based Grid workflow scheduling algorithm is proposed to counter the effect of inherent unreliability and temporal characteristics of computing resources in large scale, decentralized Grid overlays. The proposed approach builds upon structured peer-to-peer indexing and overlay networking techniques to create a scalable wide-area networking of Grid sites for supporting dependable scheduling of applications. The scheduling algorithm considers reliability of a Grid resource as a statistical property, which is globally computed in the decentralized Grid overlay based on dynamic feedbacks or reputation scores assigned by individual service consumers (Grid Resource Brokers). The proposed algorithm can dynamically adapt to changing resource conditions and offer significant performance gains as compared to traditional approaches in the event of unsuccessful job execution or resource failure. We evaluate and demonstrate the feasibility of our approach through an extensive trace driven simulation. The results show that our scheduling technique can reduce the makespan up to 50% and successfully isolate the failure-prone resources from the system. © 2009 IEEE.

The AAAI-10 workshop program was held on July 11-12, 2010, at the Westin Peachtree Plaza in Atlanta, Georgia. The workshop program included 13 workshops covering a wide range of topics in artificial intelligence. There were several presentations on particular formalisms for combining the levels of planning from the perspectives of classical planning, motion planning, POMDPs, search-based planning, and temporal logic-based constraints. Henry Lieberman from Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media laboratory presented work developing a platform for knowledge acquisition and usage from expert users, built upon experience with eliciting information from nonexperts in a collaborative manner. The objective of the AAAI Workshop on Goal-Directed Autonomy (GDA) was to encourage discussion and novel contributions on intelligent agents that can self-select their goals. Jeremy Baxter from QinetiQ focused on user interaction, while Nick Hawes described a goal-directed reasoning framework for controlling a mobile robot.

In this paper, we propose a novel method to measure the distance between two Gaussian Mixture Models. The proposed distance measure is based on the minimum cost that must paid to transform from one Gaussian Mixture Model into the other. We parameterize the components of a Gaussian Mixture Model which are Gaussian probability density functions (pdf) as positive definite lower triangular transformation matrices. Then we identify that Gaussian pdfs form a Lie group. Based on Lie group theory, the geodesic length can be used to measure the minimum cost that must paid to transform from one Gaussian pdf into the other. Combining geodesic length with the earth mover's distance, we propose the Lie group earth mover's distance for Gaussian Mixture Models. We test our distance measure in image retrieval. The experimental results indicate that our distance measure is more effective than other measures including the Kullback-Liebler divergence. Copyright 2009 ACM.

cloud resource providers in a market face dynamic and unpredictable consumer behavior. The way, how prices are set in a dynamic environment, can influence the demand behavior of price sensitive customers. A cloud resource provider has to decide on how to allocate his scarce resources in order to maximize his profit. The application of bid price control for evaluating incoming service requests is a common approach for capacity control in network revenue management. In this paper we introduce a customized version of the concept of self-adjusting bid prices and apply it to the area of cloud computing. Furthermore, we perform a simulation in order to test the efficiency of the proposed model.

It has become almost a truism that students learn more from working on projects than from lectures. This is reflected in pedagogical approaches such as Problem-based Learning, Project-based Learning (PBL) and Work-based Learning. A problem in PBL, underrated in the literature, is that while trivial tasks hold limited potential for learning, students may not succeed in solving nontrivial ones. We suggest that the solution lies in appropriate scaffolding: providing support for the learner to gradually master what is needed to complete a task. The empirical background for the study is a two-semester Software Engineering (SE) course at the Norwegian school of IT, with data collected over five years. We conclude that PBL in this setting may be successfully scaffolded by a formal, iterative and incremental SE method. As our main contribution we point to six types of scaffolding addressing essential aspects of SE project work. Copyright © 2009 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

The accelerated development in Grid computing has positioned it as the promising next generation of computing platforms. Grid computing involves resource management, task scheduling, security problems, information management and so on. In particular, scheduling is one of the core issues to take in consideration in order to exploit the capabilities of Grid systems. In this paper we present a Multi-Objective Particle Swarm (MOPSO) based schedulers for efficiently allocating jobs to resources in a Grid system. The experimental study showed that MOPSO-based schedulers outperform existing GA implementations in the literature for the problem and also revealed their efficiency when makespan and flowtime are minimized. This paper presents a 3D traffic animation system that provides features of vehicle interaction and storm surge response to emulate realistic scenarios in a hurricane affected area. The proposed system constructs road objects based on a series of line segments. Vehicles on the roads are animated by keeping them coherent with the direction of the road segment and adjusting their speeds with respect to one another. The vehicle speed is controlled based upon a collision-circumventing policy and they automatically respond to flood water caused by a storm surge. The system can automatically plant lamp posts along the roads, which also respond to surge flooding. An implementation conducted with the 3D scenes on a couple of south Florida's surge-susceptible areas demonstrates the system's excellence in animating real traffic scenes and impacts of storm surge on coastal regions.
