The last decade has seen explosive growth in the development of mobile applications. This has increased the demand on the wireless communication services. The capability to achieve wireless access anywhere, anytime, and anyplace has become common expectation as it provides significant flexibility and freedom in mobility. But to achieve global mobility in heterogeneous networks for any mobile device requires seamless connectivity using vertical handoff. Since none of the existing wireless frameworks provide practical solutions for vertical handoff. End-to-End Vertical Handoff (E2EVH) proposed in this paper offers a new concept to perform vertical handoff between heterogeneous wireless networks. To deliver network services without interruption, E2EVH present a novel design to monitor the network availability, it then picks the best accessible network for application layer. Since this approach relies only on existing technologies, deployed protocols and lightweight calculations, our approach can be easily implemented. In this paper, we present a proof-of-concept of E2EVH, and preliminary simulation results using OPNET Modeler 14.5. The results for different tested scenarios indicate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Future research activities will integrate several additional wireless technologies that are presented and discussed in the paper.

The use of blogs in educational contexts has been gaining popularity in recent years. While there are many case studies already available, few have been investigating the relationship between students' learning styles and their blogging behavior. In this paper, we use the Felder-Silverman learning style model to empirically analyze effects on blogging behavior in an undergraduate computer science course on software architectures and web technologies. While results show that blogging behavior is generally not much affected by learning style, we found some significant differences in the type of participation in blogging activities between active and reflective learners and between sequential and global learners.

Traditionally, adaptive multimedia streaming schemes aim to adjust features such as bandwidth to respond to changing network conditions, in the hope the the user perceptual impact of any quality loss is, if not unnoticed, minimised. However, current solutions equally affect the whole viewing area of the multimedia frames, despite research showing that there are regions of the frame which are perceptually more relevant than others. This paper presents a novel eye-tracking-based adaptive scheme (ETAS) for multimedia streaming that performs transmission-related quality adjustments by selectively degrading the quality of those regions of the viewers are the least interested in, leaving perceptually relevant regions unchanged.

In this paper, a reputation-based Grid workflow scheduling algorithm is proposed to counter the effect of inherent unreliability and temporal characteristics of computing resources in large scale, decentralized Grid overlays. The proposed approach builds upon structured peer-to-peer indexing and overlay networking techniques to create a scalable wide-area networking of Grid sites for supporting dependable scheduling of applications. The scheduling algorithm considers reliability of a Grid resource as a statistical property, which is globally computed in the decentralized Grid overlay based on dynamic feedbacks or reputation scores assigned by individual service consumers (Grid Resource Brokers). The proposed algorithm can dynamically adapt to changing resource conditions and offer significant performance gains as compared to traditional approaches in the event of unsuccessful job execution or resource failure. We evaluate and demonstrate the feasibility of our approach through an extensive trace driven simulation. The results show that our scheduling technique can reduce the makespan up to 50% and successfully isolate the failure-prone resources from the system.

Efficient scheduling is a key concern for the effectual execution of performance driven Grid applications, such as workflows. Many list heuristics have been developed for scheduling workflows in centralized Grid environment. However, in this paper, we present a distributed list heuristic for decentralized scheduling of workflow applications in global Grids. The simulation results show that the proposed scheduling approach is scalable with respect to increased workload on the system.

The capability to efficiently retrieve knowledge in response to specific user queries offers the potential to create decision support systems of unprecedented utility, i.e., systems which can accelerate the learning process. This paper presents such an architecture, the Type 2 Knowledge Amplification by structured expert randomization (T2K) system. This system differs from traditional expert systems in the way knowledge rules are matched with queries. The T2K has the ability to acquire knowledge from corresponding domains to answer queries from domains in which the system has less knowledge. This system also solves the word mismatch problem by modifying queries using word substitutions. This is done through creative transformations and optimizations of knowledge rule antecedents and consequents. By pairing rules with identical antecedents or consequents, we are able to induce new rules from existing knowledge without explicit elicitation from the user. The technique presented in this paper attempts to transform both the rules in the knowledge base as well as the query in order to find a matching action for a specified query.

As the World Wide Web expands and more users join, it becomes an increasingly attractive means of distributing malware. Malicious javascript frequently serves as the initial infection vector for malware. We train several classifiers to detect malicious javascript and evaluate their performance. We propose features focused on detecting obfuscation, a common technique to bypass traditional malware detectors. As the classifiers show a high detection rate and a low false alarm rate, we propose several uses for the classifiers, including selectively suppressing potentially malicious javascript based on the classifier's recommendations, achieving a compromise between usability and security.

Commercial-Off-The-Shelf Simulation Packages (CSPs) are widely used in industry to simulate discrete-event models. Interoperability of CSPs requires the use of distributed simulation techniques. Literature presents us with many examples of achieving CSP interoperability using bespoke solutions. However, for the wider adoption of CSP-based distributed simulation it is essential that, first and foremost, a standard for CSP interoperability be created, and secondly, these standards are adhered to by the CSP vendors. This advanced tutorial is on an emerging standard relating to CSP interoperability. It gives an overview of this standard and presents case studies that implement some of the proposed standards. Furthermore, interoperability is discussed in relation to large and complex models developed using CSPs that require large amount of computing resources. It is hoped that this tutorial will inform the simulation community of the issues associated with CSP interoperability, the importance of these standards and its future.

In grid and cloud computing infrastructures, the integrity of a computing platform is a critical security requirement in order to provide secure and honest computing environments to service providers and resource consumers. However, due to the fact that software components running on a single platform are usually provided and maintained by different authorities which are potentially untrusted to each other, the problem to monitor and protect runtime system integrity become very challenging and has not been well addressed yet. In this paper, we present a virtualization based dynamic integrity protection method which ensures that only appropriate authorities can control over their components without interfering with other component providers or authorities. In our solution, integrity requirements defined by the authorities of upper components (e.g., service middleware and applications) are respected by preventing the underlying components (e.g., operating system) from exposing their sensitive data, which can be caused by update of the underlying components or other malicious actions. We implement our solution on Xen-based platform, and our evaluation results show that the solution is effective for integrity protection with acceptable performance overhead.
