Since discriminant features are insufficient in the low-resolution (LR) images, it is challenging to accurately classify them. To address this issue, this paper proposes a joint super-resolution (SR) and classification network (JSRCN) based on bidirectional mapping and multiple constraints. In JSRCN, there is a SR sub-network containing a forward mapping path and several backward mapping paths. In the forward mapping path, high resolution (HR) features are progressively reconstructed. On the other hand, the backward mapping paths are used to alleviate the hardship of directly learning a nonlinear mapping from the LR space to the HR space. To effectively restore discriminant features for the image classification sub-network, multiple perceptual loss and multi-scale feature loss are presented to enhance the representation ability for the multi-scale features in images with different resolutions. Experiments show that compared with other competing methods, the proposed method achieves the highest accuracy.

—To accurately predict the risk of recurrence and metastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients, an image-encoded risk prediction model was proposed. 752 patients (training vs. testing: 527 vs. 225) were retrospectively collected, and the plasma EBV DNA copies were tested 13 times during treatment. Based on 13 times plasma EBV DNA copies, three kinds of image encoding methods were employed to characterize the linear and nonlinear dynamic change of longitudinal EBV DNA, i.e. Gramian Angular Summation Field (GASF), Gramian Angular Difference Field (GADF), and Recurrence Plot (RP). The Cox proportional hazard regression model was constructed by incorporating both image and clinical features as covariates to determine the risk factors and prediction models for disease-free survival (DFS). On the test set, the proposed model combining image and clinical features achieved C-index and AUC of 0.777 and 0.776, respectively outperforming the model relying solely on clinical features (C-index = 0.667, AUC = 0.675). In conclusion, the dynamic risk prediction model with image encoding can monitor changes in plasma EBV DNA copies during treatment, aiding doctors in assessing whole-body tumor burden, accurately predicting the dynamic risk of recurrence and metastasis, and planning individualized treatments in NPC patients. © VDE VERLAG GMBH.

TivNe-SLAM: Dynamic Mapping and Tracking via Time-Varying Neural Radiance Fields

Previous attempts to integrate Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) into the Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) framework either rely on the assumption of static scenes or require the ground truth camera poses, which impedes their application in real-world scenarios. This paper proposes a time-varying representation to track and reconstruct the dynamic scenes. Firstly, two processes, a tracking process and a mapping process, are maintained simultaneously in our framework. In the tracking process, all input images are uniformly sampled and then progressively trained in a self-supervised paradigm. In the mapping process, we leverage motion masks to distinguish dynamic objects from the static background, and sample more pixels from dynamic areas. Secondly, the parameter optimization for both processes is comprised of two stages: the first stage associates time with 3D positions to convert the deformation field to the canonical field. The second stage associates time with the embeddings of the canonical field to obtain colors and a Signed Distance Function (SDF). Lastly, we propose a novel keyframe selection strategy based on the overlapping rate. Our approach is evaluated on two synthetic datasets and one real-world dataset, and the experiments validate that our method achieves competitive results in both tracking and mapping when compared to existing state-of-the-art NeRF-based dynamic SLAM systems. Efficient Algorithms for Minimizing the Kirchhoff Index via Adding Edges

The Kirchhoff index, which is the sum of the resistance distance between every pair of nodes in a network, is a key metric for gauging network performance, where lower values signify enhanced performance. In this paper, we study the problem of minimizing the Kirchhoff index by adding edges. We first provide a greedy algorithm for solving this problem and give an analysis of its quality based on the bounds of the submodularity ratio and the curvature. Then, we introduce a gradient-based greedy algorithm as a new paradigm to solve this problem. To accelerate the computation cost, we leverage geometric properties, convex hull approximation, and approximation of the projected coordinate of each point. To further improve this algorithm, we use pre-pruning and fast update techniques, making it particularly suitable for large networks. Our proposed algorithms have nearly-linear time complexity. We provide extensive experiments on ten real networks to evaluate the quality of our algorithms. The results demonstrate that our proposed algorithms outperform the state-of-the-art methods in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. INNSE: Invertible neural network-based DNA image storage with self-correction encoding

DNA storage has become an alternative to silicon-based storage of media. However, when used to store multimodal data such as images, it fails to take full advantage of the characteristics of high correlation and variability present in such data, and currently remains inferior in terms of encoding density and time complexity. It also has the shortcoming of weak performance in terms of error correction methods to address insertion and deletion errors caused by error crosstalk. Therefore, we proposed an invertible neural network-based DNA image storage self-correction encoding method (INNSE) that uses the invertibility of network to perform up-down sampling processing on image and video data, thereby greatly reducing the number of DNA sequences required for data storage. A codebook generator was then designed to encode low-dimensional vectors into DNA sequences that meet various constraints. Finally, a self-correction method was constructed to achieve DNA sequence error correction at the base level without adding any redundant information. Our experimental results showed that, compared to the Yin-Yang algorithm, the encoding density of INNSE was increased by 3×, encoding time complexity was reduced by 95.26%. Under a simulated error rate of 2%, PSNR and SSIM were raised by 80.88% and 63.82%, respectively, proving that INNSE has significant advantages in encoding performance and error correction ability. © 2025

Instant delivery has become a fundamental service in people's daily lives. Different from the traditional express service, the instant delivery has a strict shipping time constraint after being ordered. However, the labor shortage makes it challenging to realize efficient instant delivery. To tackle the problem, researchers have studied to introduce vehicles (i.e., taxis) or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs or drones) into instant delivery tasks. Unfortunately, the delivery detour of taxis and the limited battery of UAVs make it hard to meet the rapidly increasing instant delivery demands. Under this circumstance, this paper proposes an air-ground cooperative instant delivery paradigm to maximize the delivery performance and meanwhile minimize the negative effects on the taxi passengers. Specifically, a data-driven delivery potential-demands-aware cooperative strategy is designed to improve the overall delivery performance of both UAVs and taxis as well as the taxi passengers' experience. The experimental results show that the proposed method improves the delivery number by 30.1% and 114.5% compared to the taxi-based and UAV-based instant delivery respectively, and shortens the delivery time by 35.7% compared to the taxi-based instant delivery.

ChatGPT, an AI-based chatbot, offers coherent and useful replies based on analysis of large volumes of data. In this article, leading academics, scientists, distinguish researchers and engineers discuss the transformative effects of ChatGPT on modern education. This research discusses ChatGPT capabilities and its use in the education sector, identifies potential concerns and challenges. Our preliminary evaluation shows that ChatGPT perform differently in different subject areas including finance, coding, maths, and general public queries. While ChatGPT has the ability to help educators by creating instructional content, offering suggestions and acting as an online educator to learners by answering questions, transforming education through smartphones and IoT gadgets, and promoting group work, there are clear drawbacks in its use, such as the possibility of producing inaccurate or false data and circumventing duplicate content (plagiarism) detectors where originality is essential. The often reported "hallucinations" within GenerativeAI in general, and also relevant for ChatGPT, can render its use of limited benefit where accuracy is essential. What ChatGPT lacks is a stochastic measure to help provide sincere and sensitive communication with its users. Academic regulations and evaluation practices used in educational institutions need to be updated, should ChatGPT be used as a tool in education. To address the transformative effects of ChatGPT on the learning environment, educating teachers and students alike about its capabilities and limitations will be crucial. © 2023 The Authors
