Machine learning for education is an emerging discipline where a model is developed based on training data to make predictions on students’ performance. The main aim is to identify students who would have difficulty in their learning and to take precautionary measures to help them. In this paper, we conduct a comparative analysis of the most used machine learning classification models in the literature. We evaluate the performance of the models in terms of accuracy, F-measure, and execution time using two real-life education datasets. The performance of the models is data-driven. We give insights into the models’ performance and advise on the best model to use accordingly. We believe the results of this paper will be widely used by education professionals for accurate predictions. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Large visual models have recently demonstrated their promising performance on zero-shot transfer. However, so far, none of the existing methods explicitly possess the ability to perform zero-shot transfer on parking-slot detection, which results in current deep-learning based methods relying on training datasets, and methods based on traditional computer vision exhibiting poor robustness. In this paper, we propose a large visual model-based parking-slot detection method, which utilizes a large visual model (segment anything) to segment an around-view image and infer parking-slots by analyzing the relationship of marking-points in masks. In addition, we classify real-world parking-slots into two categories, line-based and area-based. The proposed method employs a two-stage approach which has a manually designed post-processing step without training. Multiple experiments have been carried out on public benchmarks, and our method demonstrates the capability for zero-shot transfer. The code will be released at https://***/Zhai0123/SAM-PS.

GaRField++: Reinforced Gaussian Radiance Fields for Large-Scale 3D Scene Reconstruction

This paper proposes a novel framework for large-scale scene reconstruction based on 3D Gaussian splatting (3DGS) and aims to address the scalability and accuracy challenges faced by existing methods. For tackling the scalability issue, we split the large scene into multiple cells, and the candidate point-cloud and camera views of each cell are correlated through a visibility-based camera selection and a progressive point-cloud extension. To reinforce the rendering quality, three highlighted improvements are made in comparison with vanilla 3DGS, which are a strategy of the ray-Gaussian intersection and the novel Gaussians density control for learning efficiency, an appearance decoupling module based on ConvKAN network to solve uneven lighting conditions in large-scale scenes, and a refined final loss with the color loss, the depth distortion loss, and the normal consistency loss. Finally, the seamless stitching procedure is executed to merge the individual Gaussian radiance field for novel view synthesis across different cells. Evaluation of Mill19, Urban3D, and MatrixCity datasets shows that our method consistently generates more high-fidelity rendering results than state-of-the-art methods of large-scale scene reconstruction. Federated learning (FL) has emerged as a prominent machine learning paradigm in edge computing environments, enabling edge devices to collaboratively optimize a global model without sharing their private data. However, existing FL frameworks suffer from efficacy deterioration due to the system heterogeneity inherent in edge computing, especially in the presence of domain shifts across local data. In this paper, we propose a heterogeneous FL framework DapperFL, to enhance model performance across multiple domains. In DapperFL, we introduce a dedicated Model Fusion Pruning (MFP) module to produce personalized compact local models for clients to address the system heterogeneity challenges. The MFP module prunes local models with fused knowledge obtained from both local and remaining domains, ensuring robustness to domain shifts. Additionally, we design a Domain Adaptive Regularization (DAR) module to further improve the overall performance of DapperFL. The DAR module employs regularization generated by the pruned model, aiming to learn robust representations across domains. Furthermore, we introduce a specific aggregation algorithm for aggregating heterogeneous local models with tailored architectures and weights. We implement DapperFL on a real-world FL platform with heterogeneous clients. Experimental results on benchmark datasets with multiple domains demonstrate that DapperFL outperforms several state-of-the-art FL frameworks by up to 2.28%, while significantly achieving model volume reductions ranging from 20% to 80%. Isolating Compiler Bugs by Generating Effective Witness Programs with Large Language Models

Compiler bugs pose a significant threat to safety-critical applications, and promptly as well as effectively isolating these bugs is crucial for assuring the quality of compilers. However, the limited availability of debugging information on reported bugs complicates the compiler bug isolation task. Existing compiler bug isolation approaches convert the problem into a test program mutation problem, but they are still limited by ineffective mutation strategies or high human effort requirements. Drawing inspiration from the recent progress of pre-trained Large Language Models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, in code generation, we propose a new approach named LLM4CBI to utilize LLMs to generate effective test programs for compiler bug isolation. However, using LLMs directly for test program mutation may not yield the desired results due to the challenges associated with formulating precise prompts and selecting specialized prompts. To overcome the challenges, three new components are designed in LLM4CBI. First, LLM4CBI utilizes a program complexity-guided prompt production component, which leverages data and control flow analysis to identify the most valuable variables and locations in programs for mutation. Second, LLM4CBI employs a memorized prompt selection component, which adopts reinforcement learning to select specialized prompts for mutating test programs continuously. Third, a test program validation component is proposed to select specialized feedback prompts to avoid repeating the same mistakes during the mutation process. Compared with the state-of-theart approaches (DiWi and RecBi) over 120 real bugs from the two most popular compilers, namely GCC and LLVM, our evaluation demonstrates the advantages of LLM4CBI: It can isolate 69.70%/21.74% and 24.44%/8.92% more bugs than DiWi and RecBi within Top-1/Top-5 ranked results. The number of vulnerabilities reported in open source software has increased substantially in recent years. Security patches provide the necessary measures to protect software from attacks and vulnerabilities. In practice, it is difficult to identify whether patches have been integrated into software, especially if we only have binary files. Therefore, the ability to test whether a patch is applied to the target binary, a.k.a. patch presence test, is crucial for practitioners. However, it is challenging to obtain accurate semantic information from patches, which could lead to incorrect results. In this paper, we propose a new patch presence test framework named Ppt4j (Patch Presence Test forJava Binaries). Ppt4j is designed for open-source Java libraries. It takes Java binaries (i.e. bytecode files) as input, extracts semantic information from patches, and uses feature-based techniques to identify patch lines in the binaries. To evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed approach Ppt4j, we construct a dataset with binaries that include 110 vulnerabilities. The results show that Ppt4j achieves an F1 score of 98.5% with reasonable efficiency, improving the baseline by 14.2%. Furthermore, we conduct an in-the-wild evaluation of Ppt4j on JetBrains IntelliJ IDEA. The results suggest that a third-party library included in the software is not patched for two CVEs, and we have reported this potential security problem to the vendor.

Agent actions planning is a challenging problem in multi-agent reinforcement learning. Recent methods typically build their predictive models by full connection layers, but the shortage of utilizing action and observation information in complex multi-agent environment limits the performance of those methods. To address this issue, we propose a novel predictive model based on self-attention mechanism which can effectively use information in the environment. Specifically, we use the MADDPG algorithm to make a dataset where the input is the observations and actions and the output is the predicted observations and rewards. We also introduce the multi-head attention mechanism into the predictive model so that the predictive model can better combine different information for prediction. We perform extensive experiments to assess the proposed method and compare it with the representative baseline approach. Results demonstrate that our method outperforms competitors with higher accuracy in different tasks. Our implementation will be publicly available. © 2022 IEEE.

Machine learning time series models have been used to predict COVID-19 pandemic infections. Based on the public dataset from Johns Hopkins, we present a novel framework for forecasting COVID-19 infections. We implement our framework for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and develop autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) time series forecast model. To the best of our knowledge, this is the only study to forecast the infections in UAE using the time series model. © 2020 IEEE.

Microservice architectures are increasingly used to modularize IoT applications and deploy them in distributed and heterogeneous edge computing environments. Over time, these microservice-based IoT applications are susceptible to performance anomalies caused by resource hogging (e.g., CPU or memory), resource contention, etc., which can negatively impact their Quality of Service and violate their Service Level Agreements. Existing research on performance anomaly detection for edge computing environments focuses on model training approaches that either achieve high accuracy at the expense of a time-consuming and resource-intensive training process or prioritize training efficiency at the cost of lower accuracy. To address this gap, while considering the resource constraints and the large number of devices in modern edge platforms, we propose two clustering-based model training approaches: (1) intra-cluster parameter transfer learning-based model training (ICPTL) and (2) cluster-level model training (CM). These approaches aim to find a trade-off between the training efficiency of anomaly detection models and their accuracy. We compared the models trained under ICPTL and CM to models trained for specific devices (most accurate, least efficient) and a single general model trained for all devices (least accurate, most efficient). Our findings show that ICPTL's model accuracy is comparable to that of the model per device approach while requiring only 40% of the training time. In addition, CM further improves training efficiency by requiring 23% less training time and reducing the number of trained models by approximately 66% compared to ICPTL, yet achieving a higher accuracy than a single general model.
