Cost-Efficient Orchestration of Containers in clouds: A Vision, Architectural Elements, and Future Directions

This paper proposes an architectural framework for the efficient orchestration of containers in cloud environments. It centres around resource scheduling and rescheduling policies as well as autoscaling algorithms that enable the creation of elastic virtual clusters. In this way, the proposed framework enables the sharing of a computing environment between differing client applications packaged in containers, including web services, offline analytics jobs, and backend pre-processing tasks. The devised resource management algorithms and policies will improve utilization of the available virtual resources to reduce operational cost for the provider while satisfying the resource needs of various types of applications. The proposed algorithms will take factors that are previously omitted by other solutions into consideration, including 1) the pricing models of the acquired resources, 2) and the fault-tolerability of the applications, and 3) the QoS requirements of the running applications, such as the latencies and throughputs of the web services and the deadline of the analytical and pre-processing jobs. The proposed solutions will be evaluated by developing a prototype platform based on one of the existing container orchestration platforms.

Energy efficient scheduling of application components via brownout and approximate markov decision process

Unexpected loads in cloud data centers may trigger overloaded situation and performance degradation. To guarantee system performance, cloud computing environment is required to have the ability to handle overloads. The existing approaches, like Dynamic Voltage Frequency Scaling and VM consolidation, are effective in handling partial overloads, however, they cannot function when the whole data center is overloaded. Brownout has been proved to be a promising approach to relieve the overloads through deactivating application non-mandatory components or microservices temporarily. Moreover, brownout has been applied to reduce data center energy consumption. It shows that there are trade-offs between energy saving and discount offered to users (revenue loss) when one or more services are not provided temporarily. In this paper, we propose a brownout-based approximate Markov Decision Process approach to improve the aforementioned trade-offs. The results based on real trace demonstrate that our approach saves 20% energy consumption than VM consolidation approach. Compared with existing energy-efficient brownout approach, our approach reduces the discount amount given to users while saving similar energy consumption. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. Space division multiplexing, in conjunction with wavelength division multiplexing, is a powerful mechanism that increases spatial channels significantly in a single optical fiber. Spiral Phased-Laguerre-Gaussian (SP-LG) modes indicate that they effectively reduce mode coupling, thereby increasing the channel response and performance positively. However, mode-coupling influence optical fiber system leads to inter-symbol interference (ISI) between the channels and reduces both capacity and distance. In this paper, we apply the SP-LG modes in a space wavelength division multiplexing over a few-mode fiber system. The results demonstrate significant improvements in reducing channels effects and ISI. The performance evaluations are based on the bit-error-rate (BER), eye diagram and spectrum analyzer.

We report a method to tune the second harmonic generation(SHG) frequency of a metallic octamer by employing cylindrical vector beams as the excitation. Our method exploits the ability to spatially match the polarization state of excitations with the fundamental target plasmonic modes, enabling flexible control of the SHG resonant *** is found that SHG of the octamer is enhanced over a broad band(400 nm) by changing the excitation from the linearly polarized Gaussian beam to radially and azimuthally polarized beams. More strikingly, when subjected to an azimuthally polarized beam, the SHG intensity of the octamer becomes 30 times stronger than that for the linearly polarized beam even in the presence of Fano resonance.

cloud computing is a suitable solution for professionals, companies, and institutions that need to have access to computational resources on demand. clouds rely on proper management to provide such computational resources with adequate quality of service, which is established by Service Level Agreements (SLAs), to customers. In this context, cloud monitoring is a critical function to achieve such proper management. cloud monitoring systems have to accomplish requirements to perform its functions properly, and currently, there are plenty of requirements which includes: timeliness, adaptability, comprehensiveness, and scalability. However, such requirements usually have mutual influence, which is positive or negative, among them-selves, and it has prevented the development of complete cloud monitoring solutions. This paper presents a mathematical model to predict the mutual influence between timeliness and scalability, which is a step forward in cloud monitoring because it paves the way for the development of complete monitoring solutions. It complements our previous work that identified the monitoring parameters (e.g., frequency sampling, amount of monitoring data) that influence timeliness and scalability. Evaluations present the effectiveness of the mathematical model based on a comparison of the results provided by the mathematical model and the results obtained via simulation.

Global increase in trade leads to congestion of maritime traffic at the ports. This often leads to increased maritime incidents or near-miss situations. To improve maritime safety while maintaining efficiency, movement of vessels needs to be better coordinated Our work formulates this problem of co-ordinating the paths of vessels as a multi-agent path-finding (MAPF) problem. To address this problem, we introduce an innovative application of MAPF in the maritime domain known as Vessel Coordination Module (VCM). Based on the local search paradigm, VCM plans on a joint state space updated using the Electronic Navigation Charts (ENC) and the paths of vessels We introduce the notion of path quality that measures the number of positions on a vessel path that is too close to some other vessels spatially and temporally. VCM aims to improve the overall path quality of vessels by improving path quality of selected vessels. Experiments are conducted on the Singapore Straits to evaluate and compare performance of our proposed approach in heterogeneous maritime scenario Our experiment results show that VCM can improve the overall path quality of the vessels.

The fields of music, health, and technology have seen significant interactions in recent years in developing music technology for health care and well-being. In an effort to strengthen the collaboration between the involved disciplines, the workshop “Music, computing, and Health” was held to discuss best practices and state-of-the-art at the intersection of these areas with researchers from music psychology and neuroscience, music therapy, music information retrieval, music technology, medical technology (medtech), and robotics. Following the discussions at the workshop, this article provides an overview of the different methods of the involved disciplines and their potential contributions to developing music technology for health and well-being. Furthermore, the article summarizes the state of the art in music technology that can be applied in various health scenarios and provides a perspective on challenges and opportunities for developing music technology that (1) supports person-centered care and evidence-based treatments, and (2) contributes to developing standardized, large-scale research on music-based interventions in an interdisciplinary manner. The article provides a resource for those seeking to engage in interdisciplinary research using music-based computational methods to develop technology for health care, and aims to inspire future research directions by evaluating the state of the art with respect to the challenges facing each field. © The Author(s) 2021.

For quadratic minimization(QM), it is usually assumed that the solution objective is time-invariant and at the same level. However, the QM is always time-varying(i.e., naturally and implicitly dynamic) and may be at different levels(i.e., explicitly dynamic) in practice. In this paper, different from the general QM, a novel different-level dynamic QM(DLDQM) is proposed and investigated. First, the DLDQM solving is split up into two general time-varying QM(TVQM) solving. Then, a solution model is thus proposed and investigated for the DLDQM, by applying square root matrix based Zhang equivalency and Moore-Penrose(MP) generalized inverse. In addition, it is worth pointing out that solving the DLDQM is a new and important attempt of this research. Finally, illustrative numerical experiments are conducted with numerical results presented and analyzed.

Future minimization,i.e.,discrete time-varying minimization,is a difficult and meaningful *** has been successfully solved by Zhang et al using zeroing dynamics(ZD) and discretization *** this paper,a type of discrete-time ZD(DT-ZD) model,which is obtained via utilizing Zea D(Zhang et al Discretization) formula 4 I2)S Y,is analyzed and investigated to ensure its ***,via theoretical guarantees,we propose the step-length domain,or say,the effective domain of the step-length,which makes the discrete-time model ***,we make further efforts to obtain the step-length optimum which provides the optimal stability of the DT-ZD ***,numerical experiments are performed to validate the step-length domain and the step-length optimum of the DT-ZD model for future minimization.

This paper introduces Zhang neurodynamics(ZN) method and Zhang-gradient(ZG) method used to design ZN and ZG controllers for the output tracking of systems, especially time-varying nonlinear system. Thereinto, ZG method is composed of the ZN method and gradient neurodynamics(GN) method. By applying the ZN method and the ZG method, respectively, to the output tracking control problems of time-varying linear(TVL) system and time-varying nonlinear(TVN) system, specific ZN controllers and ZG controllers are obtained. Particularly, TVL system and TVN system discussed in this paper may both have pseudo division-by-zero phenomena. From the numerical results, though ZN controllers and ZG controllers perform the output tracking of TVL system and TVN system well, the infinite value of the former and the finite value of the latter at singular instants verify that the ZG method is more effective in dealing with pseudo division-by-zero problem.
