Message passing is the standard paradigm of programming in high-performance computing. However, verifying Message Passing Interface (MPI) programs is challenging, due to the complex program features (such as non-determinism and non-blocking operations). In this work, we present MPI symbolic verifier (MPI-SV), the first symbolic execution based tool for automatically verifying MPI programs with non-blocking operations. MPI-SV combines symbolic execution and model checking in a synergistic way to tackle the challenges in MPI program verification. The synergy improves the scalability and enlarges the scope of verifiable properties. We have implemented MPI-SV1 and evaluated it with 111 real-world MPI verification tasks. The pure symbolic execution-based technique successfully verifies 61 out of the 111 tasks (55%) within one hour, while in comparison, MPI-SV verifies 100 tasks (90%). On average, compared with pure symbolic execution, MPI-SV achieves 19x speedups on verifying the satisfaction of the critical property and 5x speedups on finding violations. Publishing articles in high-impact English journals is difficult for scholars around the world, especially for non-native English-speaking scholars (NNESs), most of whom struggle with proficiency in English. In order to uncover the differences in English scientific writing between native English-speaking scholars (NESs) and NNESs, we collected a large-scale data set containing more than 150,000 full-text articles published in PLoS between 2006 and 2015. We divided these articles into three groups according to the ethnic backgrounds of the first and corresponding authors, obtained by Ethnea, and examined the scientific writing styles in English from a two-fold perspective of linguistic complexity: (1) syntactic complexity, including measurements of sentence length and sentence complexity;and (2) lexical complexity, including measurements of lexical diversity, lexical density, and lexical sophistication. The Orthant-Wise Limited-memory QuasiNewton method(OWL-QN), based on the L-BFGS method, is an effective algorithm for solving the '1-regularized sparse learning problem. In order to deal with the '1-regularization, OWL-QN restrict the point to an orthant on which the quadratic model is valid and differentiable. In this paper, we propose an Inexact Orthant-Wise Limited-memory Quasi-Newton method(IOWLQN). This method, at every iteration, compute an approximate solution satisfied the inexactness conditions to estimate the exact solution. We give brief proof to the convergence and report the numerical results.

The development of communication technologies shows that fiber optics is in the main communication improvement in the last decade. Fiber optics is moved from laboratory to be a reality. Transmission of the data using the light as a signal carrier is a revolutionary improvement in the communication era. However, to enable this technology several obstacles should be addressed, such as achieving the longest distance transmission with less possible bit error rate (BER). One of the solutions was performed by careful selection of the optical modes profiles with the help of the nonlinear electrical equalizer (NLEE) to solve the problem of the mode coupling. This paper investigates on the compensation of different modes profiles in optical communication systems over few-mode fiber (FMF) based on Space Division Multiplexer (SDM) with an electrical non-linear equalizer utilized to equalize nonlinear distortions. The result shows that the LG mode achieved the best transmission distance comparing to the other modes which make it the best option to be used. Basically, the evaluation of the system has been done based on standard evaluation metrics such as BER and Eye Diagram. These results can optimize the data transmission quality.

Research software has become a central asset in academic research. It optimizes existing and enables new research methods, implements and embeds research knowledge, and constitutes an essential research product in itself. Research software must be sustainable in order to understand, replicate, reproduce, and build upon existing research or conduct new research effectively. In other words, software must be available, discoverable, usable, and adaptable to new needs, both now and in the future. Research software therefore requires an environment that supports sustainability. Hence, a change is needed in the way research software development and maintenance are currently motivated, incentivized, funded, structurally and infrastructurally supported, and legally treated. Failing to do so will threaten the quality and validity of research. In this paper, we identify challenges for research software sustainability in Germany and beyond, in terms of motivation, selection, research software engineering personnel, funding, infrastructure, and legal aspects. Besides researchers, we specifically address political and academic decision-makers to increase awareness of the importance and needs of sustainable research software practices. In particular, we recommend strategies and measures to create an environment for sustainable research software, with the ultimate goal to ensure that software-driven research is valid, reproducible and sustainable, and that software is recognized as a first class citizen in research. This paper is the outcome of two workshops run in Germany in 2019, at deRSE19 - the first International Conference of Research Software Engineers in Germany - and a dedicated DFG-supported follow-up workshop in Berlin. As a basic task of multi-camera surveillance system, person re-identification aims to re-identify a query pedestrian observed from non-overlapping multiple cameras or across different time with a single camera. Recently, deep learning-based person re-identification models have achieved great success in many benchmarks. However, these supervised models require a large amount of labeled image data, and the process of manual labeling spends much manpower and time. In this study, we introduce a method to automatically synthesize labeled person images and adopt them to increase the sample number per identity for person re-identification datasets. To be specific, we use block rectangles to randomly occlude pedestrian images. Then, a generative adversarial network (GAN) model is proposed to use paired occluded and original images to synthesize the de-occluded images that similar but not identical to the original image. Afterwards, we annotate the de-occluded images with the same labels of their corresponding raw images and use them to augment the number of samples per identity. Finally, we use the augmented datasets to train baseline model. The experiment results on CUHK03, Market-1501 and DukeMTMC-reID datasets show that the effectiveness of the proposed method. Internet of Things (IoT) aims to bring every object (eg, smart cameras, wearable, environmental sensors, home appliances, and vehicles) online, hence generating massive volume of data that can overwhelm storage systems and data analytics applications. cloud computing offers services at the infrastructure level that can scale to IoT storage and processing requirements. However, there are applications such as health monitoring and emergency response that require low latency, and delay that is caused by transferring data to the cloud and then back to the application can seriously impact their performances. To overcome this limitation, Fog computing paradigm has been proposed, where cloud services are extended to the edge of the network to decrease the latency and network congestion. To realize the full potential of Fog and IoT paradigms for real-time analytics, several challenges need to be addressed. The first and most critical problem is designing resource management techniques that determine which modules of analytics applications are pushed to each edge device to minimize the latency and maximize the throughput. To this end, we need an evaluation platform that enables the quantification of performance of resource management policies on an IoT or Fog computing infrastructure in a repeatable manner. In this paper we propose a simulator, called iFogSim, to model IoT and Fog environments and measure the impact of resource management techniques in latency, network congestion, energy consumption, and cost. We describe two case studies to demonstrate modeling of an IoT environment and comparison of resource management policies. Moreover, scalability of the simulation toolkit of RAM consumption and execution time is verified under different circumstances. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
