We describe a cross-corpora evaluation of disease mention recognition for two annotated biomedical corpora: the Human Variome Project Corpus and the Arizona Disease Corpus. Our analysis of the performance of a state-of-the-art NER tool in terms of the characteristics and annotation schema of these corpora shows that these factors significantly affect performance. © Australasian Language Technology Association Workshop 2013, ALTA 2013 - Proceedings. cloud computing is a new paradigm with a promising potential. However, issues of security, privacy, and trust raise concerns and discourage its adoption. In previous work we presented a framework for the selection of appropriate cloud provider based on security and privacy requirements criteria. However, the adoption of cloud includes release of control over valuable assets, which constitutes trust in the cloud provider of paramount importance. In this paper we extend the framework by incorporating trust and control concepts in its language and adding a new activity to properly identify and reason about trust assumptions during the selection of appropriate cloud provider. Also, the CASE tool was extended to support the new activity. A case study is used to illustrate the usefulness of our approach. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Open source intelligence, with rich content and sophisticated collection and analytical techniques, is an alternative data source in many anti-terrorism studies and has manifested significant applicable prospects. In this paper, we take the "East Turkistan" separatist activities as the research objects and collect the data from the world wide web by utilizing web crawlers. We adopt text analysis techniques to extract the information of four fundamental elements of "East Turkistan" separatist activities, including person, organization, time and place, and then construct multi-mode networks according to the relations between concepts. To analyze the characteristics of these networks, we first apply the approach of dimensional decomposition to separate the multimode networks into single vertex sub-networks and bipartite sub-networks, distinguish the importances of different types of nodes by measuring the centrality of each sub-network, and synthesize the centrality index of each sub-network to form an importance composite index (ICI). To further identify the core nodes of the four types of nodes in the network, we adopt the k-shell decomposition method to directly decompose the multi-mode network. We find that the results produced by these approaches presented above can be in accord with the actual ones. ©, 2014, Acta Automatica Sinica. All rights reserved.

The boom of educational technology has resulted in an increased number of systems that provide adaptive learning. These systems are used by diverse learners to identify the most appropriate learning resource. However, research into adaptive learning has concentrated primarily on suggestion for teaching material to be used in particular situation, and studies have focused on improving the technique underlying the adaptation of learning process without focusing on the guidance of process to achieve the individual learning goal. To tackle these problems this research proposes an intentional model that adopts Map formalism to support personalized learning guidance by an adaptive learning system. The model couples the learner's intention with the learning strategies, and provides a multitude of paths between learner intentions. In fact, based on the corresponding learning mode, the individual learning style and the current electronic media, the learning system can adaptively support the learner to achieve his/her intention through the selected strategy. Preliminary evaluation results shows that the proposed model can successfully guide the adaptive and dynamic learning process construction according to the learning situation and the learners' preferences.

Despite the growing number of videos featuring electronic cigarettes, there has been no investigation of the portrayal of these videos. This paper presents the first surveillance data of electronic cigarette videos on YouTube. Our results suggest that viewers are primarily being exposed to content promoting the use of these emerging tobacco products and the viewership is global. This study shows that it is critical to develop appropriate health campaigns to inform potential consumers of harms associated with electronic cigarette use. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Understanding the rapid information diffusion process in social media is critical for crisis management. Most of existing studies mainly focus on information diffusion patterns under the word-of-mouth spread mechanism. However, to date, the mass-media spread mechanism in social media is still not well studied. In this paper, we take the emergency event of Wenzhou train crash as a case and conduct an empirical analysis, utilizing geospatial correlation analysis and social network analysis, to explore the mass-meida spread mechanism in social media. By using the approach of agent-based modeling, we further make a quantativiely comparison with the information diffusion patterns under the word-of-mouth spread mechanism. Our exprimental results show that the mass-meida spread mechanism plays a more important role than that of the word-of-mouth in the information diffusion process during emergency events. The results of this paper can provide significant potential implications for crisis management. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

We investigate an approach of predicting marine sensor data in short-term using fuzzy clustering. The proposed method uses the similar pattern sequences with their weights using fuzzy clustering for prediction. Experimental results show that the proposed method helps in improving the accuracy in prediction over some existing approaches.

cloud computing has become a promising platform for dealing with emergent tasks. Meanwhile, dynamic task allocation algorithm plays a very important role in obtaining high performance computational capabilities. Unfortunately, little work has been done for emergent task scheduling under cloud computing environment. To address this issue, we put forward a novel agent-based allocation algorithm (ABAA for short). The algorithm employed the fair competition principle of a roulette to accomplish load balancing, and adopted the dynamic adjustment principle of a buffer pool to accommodate the diversification of task arrival. We conducted extensive experiments on cloudSim platform to evaluate the performance of the strategy. The experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm can efficiently solve emergent task allocation problem in clouds.

Privacy of physiological data collected by a network of embedded sensors on human body is an important issue to be considered. Physiological signal-based security is a light weight solution which eliminates the need for security key storage and complex exponentiation computation in sensors. An important concern is whether such security measures are vulnerable to attacks, where the attacker is in close proximity to the BSN and senses physiological signals through processes such as electromagnetic coupling. Recent studies show that when two individuals are in close proximity, the electrocardiogram of one person gets coupled to the electroencephalogram of the other, thus indicating a possibility of proximity-based security attacks. This paper proposes a model-driven approach to proximity-based attack on security using physiological signals and evaluates its feasibility. Results show that a proximity-based attack can be successful even without the exact reconstruction of the physiological data sensed by the attacked BSN.
