Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have garnered significant attention from the research community during the last decade, due to their diverse capabilities and potential applications. One of the most critical functions that drones must execute efficiently is navigation in real-world environments. This paper presents a decentralized approach for enabling unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to navigate safely in unknown environments and avoid obstacles. Leveraging the Optimal Reciprocal Collision Avoidance (ORCA) algorithm, implemented in the Robot Operating System (ROS), our method facilitates conflict detection and resolution in 2D environments. Through simulations using ROS, Gazebo, and Iris drones, we validate the effectiveness of our approach in scenarios with initial trajectory conflicts. Our work addresses the pressing need for UAVs to autonomously plan and execute safe flights, laying the groundwork for enhanced UAV capabilities in various real-world applications. The simulation results demonstrate the efficiency and robustness of our approach. © 2024 IEEE.

The precise quantification of soil carbon content is crucial for understanding soil health and its impact on climate change. This study investigates the classification of soil carbon content using millimeter wave radar array signals, focusing on a comparative analysis of Support Vector Machines (SVM), Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT), and Fractional Fourier Transform (FrFT) methods. Furthermore, raw time and CWT-processed signals using SVM are used as baseline to establish the fundamental classification performance. The key contribution of this research is the innovative use of FrFT, where the transformed signals are converted into images and subsequently fed into GoogLeNet through transfer learning. This approach leverages the powerful feature extraction capabilities of GoogleNet to enhance classification accuracy. Experiments were conducted on a dataset comprising millimeter wave signals reflecting varied backgrounds with the primary focus on one specific distance measurement. Results provided show that high resolution millimeter wave signals achieved up to 100% validation accuracy at multiple fractional orders. The improved accuracy highlights the potential of integrating advanced signal transformation methods with deep learning models for soil carbon content classification. © 2024 IEEE.

Wireless systems and Internet of Things (IoT) sensing applications need Low Noise Amplifiers (LNA). However, a simple design is desirable for wearable IoT applications. In this direction, a single-stage LNA having considerable gain, stability, and noise figure (NF) for wearable IoT applications have been designed. An analysis of gain, noise factor, and stability for various values of gate voltage is performed to determine the utility and performance. The transistor used here is a Low Noise Gallium Arsenide FET and lumped components are used for matching at input and output side. It is found that the proposed LNA has 15.689 dB forward gain, a bandwidth of 1600 MHz and 0.672 dB Noise Figure at frequency 2.4 GHz that can be used for sensors operating in LS bands of frequencies. The LNA has been designed with fewer components in order to make it suitable for wearable IoT. © 2022 IEEE.

A novel approach to deriving adaboost classifier weights using squared loss function for overlapping speech detection

In this paper, we address the complex problem of detecting overlapping speech segments, a key challenge in speech processing with applications in speaker diarization, automatic transcription, and multi-speaker recognition systems. Traditional approaches, often relying on exponential loss functions within the AdaBoost framework, struggle to maintain robustness in noisy or imbalanced data environments. To enhance detection accuracy, we propose a novel AdaBoost variant—SLFAdaBoost—utilizing a squared loss function specifically tailored for overlapping speech detection. This model demonstrates superior stability and convergence, significantly outperforming conventional methods. Experimental evaluation on the NIST 2005 corpus revealed that SLFAdaBoost achieves an accuracy range of 92.5% to 98.6%, with F1 scores between 95.4% and 99.2%, notably surpassing standard AdaBoost and Random Forest classifiers. Additionally, our model shows resilience in noisy conditions, maintaining precision and recall metrics at higher noise levels than other classifiers. These results underscore SLFAdaBoost's capacity to handle intricate data patterns, offering a more robust solution for real-world speech processing applications where overlapping segments are prevalent. A Simple Baseline with Single-encoder for Referring Image Segmentation

Referring image segmentation (RIS) requires dense vision-language interactions between visual pixels and textual words to segment objects based on a given description. However, commonly adapted dual-encoders in RIS, e.g. Swin transformer and BERT (uni-modal encoders) or CLIP (a multi-modal dual-encoder), lack dense multi-modal interactions during pretraining, leading to a gap with a pixel-level RIS task. To bridge this gap, existing RIS methods often rely on multi-modal fusion modules that interact two encoders, but this approach leads to high computational costs. In this paper, we present a novel RIS method with a single-encoder, i.e. BEiT-3, maximizing the potential of shared self-attention across all framework components. This enables seamless interactions of two modalities from input to final prediction, producing granularly aligned multimodal features. Furthermore, we propose lightweight yet effective decoder modules, a Shared FPN and a Shared Mask Decoder, which contribute to the high efficiency of our model. Our simple baseline with a single encoder achieves outstanding performances on the RIS benchmark datasets while maintaining computational efficiency, compared to the most recent SoTA methods based on dual-encoders. © 2024, CC BY.

With the rapid proliferation of IoT and cloud networks and the corresponding number of devices, handling incoming requests has become a significant challenge. Task scheduling problems have emerged as a common concern, necessitating the exploration of new methods for request management. This paper proposes a novel approach called the Fuzzy Inverse Markov Data Envelopment Analysis Process (FIMDEAP). Our method combines the strengths of the Fuzzy Inverse Data Envelopment Analysis (FIDEA) and Fuzzy Markov Decision Process (FMDP) techniques to enable the efficient selection of physical and virtual machines while operating in a fuzzy mode. We represent data as triangular fuzzy numbers and employ the alpha-cut method to solve the proposed models. The paper provides a mathematical optimization model for the proposed method and presents a numerical example for illustration. Furthermore, we evaluate the performance of our method in a cloud environment through simulations. The results demonstrate that our approach outperforms existing methods, namely PSO + ACO and FBPSO + FBACO, in terms of key metrics, including energy consumption, execution cost, response time, gain of cost, and makespan. © The Author(s) 2023.

Multi-key membership testing refers to checking whether a queried element exists in a given set of multi-key elements, which is a fundamental operation for computing systems and networking applications such as web search, mail systems, distributed databases, firewalls, and network routing. Most existing studies for membership testing are built on Bloom filter, a space-efficient and high-security probabilistic data structure. However, traditional Bloom filter always performs poorly in multi-key scenarios. Recently, a new variant of Bloom filter that has combined machine learning methods and Bloom filter, also known as Learned Bloom Filter (LBF), has drawn increasing attention for its significant improvements in reducing space occupation and False Positive Rate (FPR). More importantly, due to the introduction of the learned model, LBF can well address some problems of Bloom filter in multi-key scenarios. Because of this, we propose a Multi-key LBF (MLBF) data structure, which contains a value-interaction-based multi-key classifier and a multi-key Bloom filter. To reduce FPR, we further propose an Interval-based MLBF, which divides keys into specific intervals according to the data distribution. Extensive experiments based on two real datasets confirm the superiority of the proposed data structures in terms of FPR and query efficiency. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
