In recent years, the proliferation of smart devices and associated technologies, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), and Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), has witnessed a substantial growth. However, the limited processing power and storage capacity of smart devices make them vulnerable to cyberattacks, rendering traditional security and cryptography techniques inadequate. To address these challenges, blockchain (BC) technology has emerged as a promising solution. This study introduces an efficient framework for the Internet of Healthcare Things (IoHT), presenting a novel cryptosystem for color medical images using BC technology in conjunction with the IoT, Secure Hash Algorithm 256-bit (SHA256), shuffling, and bitwise XOR operations. The encryption scheme is specifically designed for an IIoT grid network computing system, relying on diffusion and confusion principles. In this paper, the proposed cryptosystem strength is evaluated against differential attacks with several comprehensive metrics. Simulation results and theoretical analysis demonstrate the cryptosystem effectiveness, showcasing its ability to provide high levels of security and immunity to data leakage. The proposed cryptosystem offers a versatile range of technical solutions and strategies that are adaptable to various scenarios. The evaluation metrics, with approximate values of 99.61% for Number of Pixels Change Rate (NPCR), 33.46% for Unified Average Changed Intensity (UACI), and 8 for information entropy, closely align with the desired ideal outcomes. Consequently, this paper contributes to the advancement of secure and private systems for medical image encryption based on BC technology, potentially mitigating the risks associated with cyberattacks on smart medical devices. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

UML use cases are commonly used in software engineering to specify the functional requirements of a system since they are an effective tool for interacting with stakeholders thanks to the use of natural languages. However, producing high-quality use cases can be challenging due to the lack of precise guidelines and suitable tools. This can lead to problems, e.g. inaccuracy and incompleteness, in the derived software artifacts and the final product. Recent advancements in Natural Language Processing and Large Language Models (LLMs) can provide the premises for developing tools supporting activities based on natural languages. In this paper, we propose ECHO, a novel approach for supporting software engineers in enhancing the quality of UML use cases using LLMs. Our approach consists of a co-prompt engineering approach and an iterative and interactive process with the LLM to improve the quality of use cases, based on practitioners' feedback. To prove the feasibility of the proposal, we instantiated the approach using ChatGPT and performed a controlled experiment to assess its effectiveness by involving seven software engineering professionals. Three were part of the experimental group and used ECHO to improve the quality of the use cases. Three others were the control group and enhanced the quality of use cases manually. Finally, the last participant acted as an oracle, blind w.r.t. the groups, and evaluated the quality of the enhanced use cases, both qualitatively by means of a questionnaire, and quantitatively, by means of the Use Case Points metric. Results show that ECHO can effectively support software engineers to improve use cases' quality thanks to the prompts suitably designed to interact with ChatGPT. © 2023 IEEE.

Cancers have emerged as a significant concern due to their impact on public health and society. The examination and interpretation of tissue sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) play a crucial role in disease assessment, particularly in cases like gastric cancer. Microsatellite instability (MSI) is suggested to contribute to the carcinogenesis of specific gastrointestinal tumors. However, due to the nonspecific morphology observed in H&E-stained tissue sections, MSI determination often requires costly evaluations through various molecular studies and immunohistochemistry methods in specialized molecular pathology laboratories. Despite the high cost, international guidelines recommend MSI testing for gastrointestinal cancers. Thus, there is a pressing need for a new diagnostic modality with lower costs and widespread applicability for MSI detection. This study aims to detect MSI directly from H&E histology slides in gastric cancer, providing a cost-effective alternative. The performance of well-known deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and a proposed architecture are compared. Medical image datasets are typically smaller than benchmark datasets like ImageNet, necessitating the use of off-the-shelf DCNN architectures developed for large datasets through techniques such as transfer learning. Designing an architecture proportional to a custom dataset can be tedious and may not yield desirable results. In this work, we propose an automatic method to extract a lightweight and efficient architecture from a given heavy architecture (e.g., well-known off-the-shelf DCNNs) proportional to a specific dataset. To predict MSI instability, we extracted the MicroNet architecture from the Xception network using the proposed method and compared its performance with other well-known architectures. In recent years, Digital Twin (DT) has gained significant interestfrom academia and industry due to the advanced in information technology,communication systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud Computing (CC),and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). The main concept of the DT isto provide a comprehensive tangible, and operational explanation of anyelement, asset, or system. However, it is an extremely dynamic taxonomydeveloping in complexity during the life cycle that produces a massive amountof engendered data and information. Likewise, with the development of AI,digital twins can be redefined and could be a crucial approach to aid theInternet of Things (IoT)-based DT applications for transferring the data andvalue onto the Internet with better decision-making. Therefore, this paperintroduces an efficient DT-based fault diagnosis model based on machinelearning (ML) tools. In this framework, the DT model of the machine isconstructed by creating the simulation model. In the proposed framework,the Genetic algorithm (GA) is used for the optimization task to improvethe classification accuracy. Furthermore, we evaluate the proposed faultdiagnosis framework using performance metrics such as precision, accuracy,F-measure, and recall. The proposed framework is comprehensively examinedusing the triplex pump fault diagnosis. The experimental results demonstratedthat the hybrid GA-ML method gives outstanding results compared to MLmethods like LogisticRegression (LR), Na飗e Bayes (NB), and SupportVectorMachine (SVM). The suggested framework achieves the highest accuracyof 95% for the employed hybrid GA-SVM. The proposed framework willeffectively help industrial operators make an appropriate decision concerningthe fault analysis for IIoT applications in the context of Industry 4.0.

This paper presents an innovative control strategy to enhance the stability of interconnected Microgrids (MGs) with low inertia and high penetration levels of Renewable Energies (REs). The proposed control strategy encompasses a new virtual droop control mechanism that emulates the primary control of synchronous generators for enhanced system stability. Additionally, a weighted Proportional-Integral (PI) controller is used to mitigate the adverse effects of measurement delays caused by Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) dynamics. Furthermore, a feedback integral loop is introduced to improve the efficiency and lifespan of Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFBs) enabling swift and precise power delivery while reducing steady-state errors. Finally, a new fractional-order virtual inertia control (VIC) is introduced to leverage the fractional derivatives and enhance the system's frequency response. The presented simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control approach in improving the frequency response and power exchange dynamics across interconnected MGs under various operating scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.

Performance analysis of a healthcare internet of things system subject to wireless cloud connection failure

The Internet of Things (IoT) has had significant effects on our world. One of the most promising IoT applications is healthcare. In this paper, a queuing model of a healthcare IoT system subject to wireless cloud connection failure is proposed and the system performance is analysed based on different system parameters. By using the generating function technique, the analytical solution for the system balance equations is derived including the explicit solution of the system empty probability and the recursive solution of the rest probabilities. Some performance metrics of interest are then developed and detailed numerical evaluation for the metrics are performed for further understanding and verification of the analytical results. The proposed system modelling and performance analysis method can serve as a useful reference for the general IoT system design and evaluation. Copyright © 2021 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Inductive wireless power transfer (WPT) faces significant challenges in achieving high efficiency and stable output power for charging mobile devices like EVs. Using circular pads (CP) as the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx) and a self-oscillating controlled inverter, this paper demonstrates a robust WPT system that maintains high constant transfer efficiency and output power in a defined region regardless of coupling coefficient variations without communication between Tx and Rx or control circuits for the receiver side. In contrast to couplers with non-identical Tx and Rx pads and multiple decoupled coils in the Rx pad, the compact CP-CP magnetic coupler with a single identical coil on the Tx and Rx is more robust at a wider transfer distance (air gap) and lateral and rotational misalignment between the Tx and Rx. The proposed 1-kW robust WPT system with up to a 20 cm air gap between the Tx and Rx and up to 12 cm lateral misalignment in all directions at a 15 cm air gap and all degrees of rotational misalignment can tolerate coupling variations and achieve constant output power with 93% constant transfer efficiency. © 2023 IEEE.

Autonomous driving is an emerging technology that has developed rapidly over the last decade. There have been numerous interdisciplinary challenges imposed on the current transportation system by autonomous vehicles. In this paper, we conduct an algorithmic study on the autonomous vehicle decision-making process, which is a fundamental problem in the vehicle automation field and the root cause of most traffic congestion. We propose a perception-and-decision framework, called HEAD, which consists of an enHanced pErception module and a mAneuver Decision module. HEAD aims to enable the autonomous vehicle to perform safe, efficient, and comfortable maneuvers with minimal impact on other vehicles. In the enhanced perception module, a graph-based state prediction model with a strategy of phantom vehicle construction is proposed to predict the one-step future states for multiple surrounding vehicles in parallel, which deals with sensor limitations such as limited detection range and poor detection accuracy under occlusions. Then in the maneuver decision module, a deep reinforcement learning-based model is designed to learn a policy for the autonomous vehicle to perform maneuvers in continuous action space w.r.t. a parameterized action Markov decision process. A hybrid reward function takes into account aspects of safety, efficiency, comfort, and impact to guide the autonomous vehicle to make optimal maneuver decisions. Extensive experiments offer evidence that HEAD can advance the state of the art in terms of both macroscopic and microscopic effectiveness. © 2023 IEEE.

Resource scheduling catering to real-time IoT services in a serverless-enabled edge network is particularly challenging owing to the workload variability, strict constraints on tolerable latency, and unpredictability in the energy sources powering the edge devices. This paper proposes a framework LEASE that dynamically schedules resources in serverless functions catering to different microservices and adhering to their deadline constraint. To assist the scheduler in making effective scheduling decisions, we introduce a priority-based approach that offloads functions from over-provisioned edge nodes to under-provisioned peer nodes, considering the expended energy in the process without compromising the completion time of microservices. For real-world implementations, we consider a testbed comprising a Raspberry Pi cluster serving as edge nodes, equipped with container orchestrator tools such as Kubernetes and powered by OpenFaaS, an open-source serverless platform. Experimental results demonstrate that compared to the benchmarking algorithm, LEASE achieves a 23.34% reduction in the overall completion time, with 97.64% of microservices meeting their deadline. LEASE also attains a 30.10% reduction in failure rates.
