Machine learning models are increasingly used in time series prediction with promising results. The model explanation of time series prediction falls behind the model development and makes less sense to users in understanding model decisions. This paper proposes ES-Mask, a post-hoc and model-agnostic evolutionary strip mask-based saliency approach for time series applications. ES-Mask designs the mask consisting of strips with the same salient value in consecutive time steps to produce binary and sustained feature importance scores over time for easy understanding and interpretation of time series. ES-Mask uses an evolutionary algorithm to search for the optimal mask by manipulating strips in rounds, thus is agnostic to models by involving no internal model states in the search. Although the containers are featured by light-weightness, it is still resource-consuming to pull and startup a large container image, especially in relatively resource-constrained edge cloud. Fortunately, Docker, as the most widely used container, provides a unique layered architecture that allows the same layer to be shared between microservices so as to lower the deployment cost. Meanwhile, it is highly desirable to deploy dependent microservices of an application together to lower the operation cost. Therefore, the balancing of microservice deployment cost and the operation cost should be considered comprehensively to achieve minimal overall cost of an on-demand application. In this paper, we first formulate this problem into a Quadratic Integer Programming form (QIP) and prove it as a NP-hard problem. We further propose a Randomized Rounding-based Microservice Deployment and Layer Pulling (RR-MDLP) algorithm with low computation complexity and guaranteed approximation ratio. Through extensive experiments, we verify the high efficiency of our algorithm by the fact that it significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art microservice deployment strategies. © 2023 IEEE.

Temporal knowledge graph (TKG) extrapolation aims to predict future unknown events (facts) based on historical information, and has attracted considerable attention due to its great practical significance. Accurate representations (embeddings) of entities and relations form the basis of TKG extrapolation. Recent work has been devoted to improving the rationality of entity representations. However, on the one hand, ignoring relation modeling results in incomplete relation representations;therefore, some approaches aggregate only immediately adjacent entities of relations, but this can lead to the "message islands"problem of relation modeling. On the other hand, ignoring the association constraints between relations and entities can make the embeddings of both relations and entities prone to overfitting. To address the abovementioned challenges, we propose an advanced method, namely, RETIA. For the former issue, we generate twin hyperrelation subgraphs for each historical subgraph and then aggregate both the adjacent entities and relations in the hyperrelation subgraphs through a graph convolutional network (GCN). About the latter concern, we propose a twin-interact module (TIM), which provides communication channels for relation aggregation and entity aggregation during the evolution of the historical sequence. Experiments conducted on five public datasets show that RETIA has made great improvements across several evaluation metrics. Dispatcher: Resource-aware Nakamoto Blockchain via Hierarchical Topology and Adaptive Incentives

Mainstream blockchain systems such as Bitcoin and Ethereum are revolutionizing the financial industry by adopting the Nakamoto consensus protocol, i.e., Proof-of-Work (PoW). Only nodes with sufficient computing resources can work out the PoW difficulties, thereby increasing the mining cost of malicious attackers and ensuring the security of blockchain systems. Such an assumption of having abundant resources leads to drawbacks of low throughput and risk of centralization. In this article, we present Dispatcher, a novel distributed consensus protocol that takes resource heterogeneity into account to ensure resource-aware PoW with high efficiency. Dispatcher introduces a hierarchical topology to offer flexible PoW difficulties tailored for different nodes’ resources. In particular, it utilizes the limited resource of each node to jointly maximize the performance by concurrent mining. Moreover, we design an adaptive incentive mechanism to fit the available resource of blockchain nodes to rewards. Our experiments show that Dispatcher enjoys a substantial performance margin over the state-of-the-art. We can achieve a 50% throughput improvement compared with OHIE.

Video stream analytics (VSA) systems fuel many exciting applications that facilitate people’s lives, but also raise critical concerns about exposing too much individuals’ privacy. To alleviate these concerns, various frameworks have been presented to enhance the privacy of VSA systems. Yet, existing solutions suffer two limitations: (1) being scenario-customized, thus limiting the generality of adapting to multifarious scenarios, (2) requiring complex, imperative programming, and tedious process, thus largely reducing the usability of such systems. In this paper, we present X-Stream, a privacy-preserving video transformer that achieves flexibility and efficiency for a large variety of VSA tasks. X-Stream features three major novel designs: (1) a declarative query interface that provides a simple yet expressive interface for users to describe both their privacy protection and content exposure requirements, (2) an adaptation mechanism that dynamically selects the most suitable privacy-preserving techniques and their parameters based on the current video context, and (3) an efficient execution engine that incorporates optimizations for multi-task deduplication and inter-frame inference. We implement X-Stream and evaluate it with representative VSA tasks and public video datasets. The results show that X-Stream achieves significantly improved privacy protection quality and performance over the state-of-the-art, while being simple to use.

Multi-version graph processing has been widely used to solve many real-world problems. The process of the multi-version graph processing typically includes: (1) a history graph version switching at a specific time and (2) graph processing on this history graph. Existing multi-version graph systems assume ideally that every request for a particular graph version at a particular time will have a corresponding snapshot available. However, in most cases, this is not true. Then existing solutions usually have to settle with an "approximating"version as a substitute, leading to unexpected results for the underlying graph algorithm and thus reducing the practicality of a multi-version graph system for many application scenarios *** this paper, we observe that only a few graph updates have a great impact on the final results. We therefore present AFaVS, a novel multi-version graph system that can improve accuracy effectively in both time- and memory-efficient manners. The cornerstone of AFaVS lies in a novel concept "value"that characterizes the importance of graph updates. AFaVS proposes differential management of updates based on their values and achieves higher accuracy while preserving processing and memory efficiency. AFaVS is also equipped with value-guided version switching and locality-aware optimizations to boost its overall efficiency. Our results on a variety of real-world datasets show that AFaVS outperforms four state-of-the-art multi-version graph systems by 74.35%~95.72% in terms of accuracy improvement and 57.03%~90.44% in terms of memory reduction while introducing less than 2.96% extra computing time. We have deployed AFaVS in a disaster recovery system on the production cluster of Alibaba, achieving 78.8%~90.1% fewer error rates than advanced systems at a comparable efficiency. © 2023 IEEE.

Knowledge representation learning is a key step required for link prediction tasks with knowledge graphs (KGs). During the learning process, the semantics of each entity are embedded by a vector or a point in a feature space. The distance between these points is a measure of semantic similarity. However, in a KG, while two entities may have similar semantics in some relations, they have different semantics in others. It is ambiguous to assign a fixed distance to depict the variant semantic similarity of entities. To alleviate the semantic ambiguity in KGs, we design a new embedding approach named OpticE, which is derived from the well-known physical phenomenon of optical interference. It is a lightweight and relation-adaptive model based on coherence theory, in which each entity’s semantics vary automatically regarding different relations. In addition, a unique negative sampling method is proposed to combine the multimapping properties and self-adversarial learning during the training process. The experimental results obtained on practical KG benchmarks show that the OpticE model, with elegant structures, can compete with existing link prediction methods. © 2022 Proceedings - International Conference on Computational Linguistics, COLING. FFCI: A Camera and IMU Sensors Based Multi-modal Neural Network for Activity Recognition in Smart Factory

Worker activity recognition is an important aspect of the construction of smart factory. The development of deep neural networks and the widespread distribution of sensors in the smart factory have brought opportunities for the recognition of workers' activities. The existing methods based on camera and IMU sensors respectively have problems of visual occlusion and difficulty in recognition of similar activities, which result in the reduction of recognition accuracy. Therefore, we propose a feature-level fusion based on camera and IMU sensor (FFCI) for activity recognition in smart factory. The FFCI employs an optimized multi-modal fusion strategy to integrate the visual information and the action information of workers' activities. In order to verify the effectiveness of FFCI, we define a simple yet fine-grained assembly task and collect six common operations. Furthermore, we add visual occlusion and similar activity data to get closer to the smart factory. Finally, we evaluate the FFCI on the collected dataset and achieve a recognition accuracy of 98.17%, demonstrating its effectiveness in accurately classifying workers' activities. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

SPViT: Accelerate Vision Transformer Inference on Mobile Devices via Adaptive Splitting and Offloading

The Vision Transformer (ViT), which benefits from utilizing self-attention mechanisms, has demonstrated superior accuracy compared to CNNs. However, due to the expensive computational costs, deploying and inferring ViTs on resource-constrained mobile devices has become a challenge. To resolve this challenge, we conducted an empirical analysis to identify performance bottlenecks in deploying ViTs on mobile devices and explored viable solutions. In this paper, we propose SPViT, an adaptive split and offloading method that accelerates ViT inference on mobile devices. SPViT executes collaborative inference of ViT across available edge devices. We introduce a fine-grained splitting technique for the vision transformer structure. Furthermore, we propose an algorithm based on the Auto Regression model to predict partition latency and adaptive offload partitions. Finally, we design offline and online optimization methods to minimize the computational and communication overhead on each device. Based on real-world prototype experiments, SPViT effectively reduces inference latency by 2.2x to 3.3x across four state-of-the-art models. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Semantic reasoning techniques based on knowledge graphs have been widely studied since they were proposed. Previous studies are mostly based on closed-world assumptions, which cannot reason about unknown facts. To this end, we propose the Two-Stage Temporal Reasoning Model (TSTR) for reasoning about future facts. In the first stage, probability of future facts occurring is reasoned using repeated information in history. In the second stage, the semantics of the neighborhood nodes are aggregated using the structural encoder and the temporal information is captured using the temporal encoder. The predicted probabilities are obtained by the decoder. Finally, the candidate entity probabilities of the two-stage reasoning are weighted to achieve the prediction of the two-stage fusion. We tested the performance of the TSTR on public datasets and the results demonstrated the effectiveness of the TSTR. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
