HMvisor: dynamic hybrid memory management for virtual machines

Emerging non-volatile memory(NVM) technologies promise high density, low cost and dynamic random access memory(DRAM)-like performance, at the expense of limited write endurance and high write energy consumption. It is more practical to use NVM combining with the traditional DRAM. However, the hybrid memory management such as page migration becomes more challenging in a virtualization environment because virtual machines(VMs) are unaware of the memory heterogeneity. In this paper, we propose HMvisor, a hypervisor and VM coordinated hybrid memory management mechanism to better utilize DRAM and NVM resources. HMvisor exposes the memory heterogeneity to VMs by mapping virtual NUMA nodes to different physical NUMA nodes. We propose a lightweight and efficient page migration mechanism by decoupling page hotness tracking from page migration. HMvisor performs those operations in the hypervisor and VMs separately, without disrupting the execution of VMs. We also propose a memory resource trading policy to adjust the capacity of DRAM and NVM for each VM, with the monetary cost unchanged. We implement our prototype system based on QEMU/KVM and evaluate it with several benchmarks. Experimental results show that HMvisor can reduce 50% of write traffic to NVM with less than 5% performance overhead. Moreover, the hybrid memory adjustment scheme in HMvisor can significantly improve application performance by up to 30×.

Since the advent of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, blockchain, as their underlying technologies,has drawn a massive amount of attention from both academia and the industry. This ever-evolving technology inherits the “genes” of distributed systems, offering significant advantages of immutability, transparency,auditability, and tamper-resistance. These benefits help blockchain re-establish public confidence, and hold the significant promise of reliable information sharing and value transfer. Therefore, blockchain has become the foundation of crucial strategic deployments in countries across the world, and the fundamental basis for building the next generation Web 3.0 — “Internet of value”. In this article, we will start with unraveling the essential ingredients of blockchain technology, and showing the characteristics of each of these ingredients in the context of distributed systems. We will then present the core technical challenges that need to be addressed prior to unleashing its full potential, including its performance, scalability, and cross-chain interoperability. Finally, we will introduce the recent developments of blockchain systems, and discuss the future trends of the blockchain ecosystem.

Theprogramcommitteeispleasedtopresent the proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on grid and Cooperative Comp- ing (GCC2004), which comprises a collection of excellent technical papers, posters, workshops, and keynote speeches. The papers accepted cover a wide range of exciting topics, including resource grid and service grid, information grid and knowledge grid, grid monitoring,managementand organizationtools, grid portal, grid service, Web s- vices and their QoS, service orchestration, grid middleware and toolkits, software glue technologies, grid security, innovative grid applications, advanced resource reservation andscheduling,performanceevaluationandmodeling,computer-supportedcooperative work, P2P computing, automatic computing, and meta-information management. The conference continues to grow and this year a record total of 581 manuscripts (including workshop submissions) were submitted for consideration. Expecting this growth, the size of the program committee was increased from 50 members for GCC 2003 for 70 in GCC 2004. Relevant differences from previous editions of the conf- ence: it is worth mentioning a signi?cant increase in the number of papers submitted by authors from outside China; and the acceptance rate was much lower than for p- vious GCC conferences. From the 427 papers submitted to the main conference, the program committee selected only 96 regular papers for oral presentation and 62 short papers for poster presentation in the program.

Hadoop/MapReduce has emerged as a de facto programming framework to explore cloud-computing resources. Hadoop has many configuration parameters, some of which are crucial to the performance of MapReduce jobs. In practice, these parameters are usually set to default or inappropriate values. This severely limits system performance (e.g., execution time). Therefore, it is essential but also challenging to investigate how to automatically tune these parameters to optimize MapReduce job performance. In this paper, we propose an automatic MapReduce configuration optimization framework named as MR-COF. By monitoring and analyzing the runtime behavior, the framework adopts a cost-based performance prediction model that predicts the MapReduce job performance. In addition, we design a genetic search algorithm which iteratively tunes parameters in order to find out the best one. Testbed-based experimental results show that the average MapReduce job performance is increased by 35% with MR-COF compared to the default configuration. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Temporal Graph Neural Network (TGNN) has attracted much research attention because it can capture the dynamic nature of complex networks. However, existing solutions suffer from redundant computation overhead and excessive off-chip communications for TGNN inference because they often rely on redundant graph sampling and repeatedly fetching the features and vertex memory. This paper proposes a redundancy-free accelerator, RTGA, for high-performance TGNN inference. Specifically, RTGA proposes a redundancy-aware execution approach with temporal tree into a novel accelerator design to effectively eliminate unnecessary data processing for fewer redundant computations and off-chip communications and also designs a temporal-aware data caching method to improve data locality for TGNN. We have implemented and evaluated RTGA on a Xilinx Alveo U280 FPGA card. Compared with cutting-edge software solutions (i.e., TGN and TGL) and hardware solutions (i.e., BlockGNN and FlowGNN), RTGA improves the performance of TGNN inference by an average of 473.2x, 87.4x, 8.2x, and 6.9x and saves energy by 542.8x, 102.2x, 9.4x, and 8.3x, respectively. © 2024 Copyright is held by the owner/author(s). The simulation grid has become a very important research topic. In order to ensure the QoS of resource management, we present a control mechanism in simulation grid, which is based on the prediction methods. In the control mechanism, we first introduce our resource management module in simulation grid. Then, we propose a resource allocation algorithm. In order to justify the feasibility and the availability of this control mechanism, a series of experiments have been done. The results show that it is feasible to schedule the system resources and control the QoS of system resources for tasks in simulation grid. © 2012 IEEE.

Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) has been an effective tool to detect and prevent unwanted attempts, which are mainly through network and system vulnerabilities, at accessing and manipulating computer systems. Intrusion detection and prevention are two main functions of IPS. As attacks are becoming massive and complex, the traditional centralized IPSes are incapable of detecting all those attempts. The existing distributed IPSes, mainly based on mobile agent, have some serious problems, such as weak security of mobile agents, response latency, large code size. In this paper, we propose a customized intrusion prevention system, VMFence, in distributed virtual computing environment to simplify the complexity of the management. In VMFence, the states of detection processes vary with those of Virtual Machines (VMs), which are described by Deterministic Finite Automata (DFA). The detection processes, each of which detects one virtual machine, reside in a privileged virtual machine. The processes run synchronously and outside of VMs in order to achieve high performance and security. The experimental results also show VMFence has higher detection efficiency than traditional intrusion detection systems and little impact on the performance of the monitored VMs. Copyright 2009 ACM.

The prevalence of multicore processors and virtualization technology enables parallel soft real-time applications to run in virtualized environment. However, current hypervisors do not provide adequate support for them because of soft real-time constraints and synchronization problems, which result in frequent deadline misses and serious performance degradation. In this paper, we propose a novel parallel soft real-time scheduling algorithm which addresses them well, and implement a parallel soft real-time scheduler, named Poris, based on Xen. Our evaluation shows that Poris shortens the execution time of PARSEC benchmark by up to 44.12% compared to Credit scheduler. © 2013 Authors.

Silicosis is one of the most serious occupational diseases in China. Radiologist information comes from chest radiographs, in which the most important parts are lung fields and ribs. It is necessary to distinguish lung fields and ribs from other organs. The anatomical knowledge-based lung segmentation can improve the accuracy of segmentation and solve the problems of opened region and lost clavicle region. The curve model-based rib segmentation can acquire more accurate rib location information, and provide more efficient orientation for latter diagnosis. These two methods are also deployed in grid environment to get higher efficiency when processing massive and distributed medical data for silicosis diagnosis. Experiments show that the two proposed algorithms can meet the latter medical requirements for chest radiograph with higher accuracy. Copyright 2009 ACM.
