In-memory cluster computing systems based MapReduce, such as Spark, have made a great impact in addressing all kinds of big data problems. Given the overuse of memory speed, which stems from avoiding the latency caused by disk I/O operations, some process designs may cause resource inefficiency in traditional high performance computing (HPC) systems. Hash-based shuffle, particularly large-scale shuffle, can significantly affect job performance through excessive file operations and unreasonable use of memory. Some intermediate data unnecessarily overflow to the disk when memory usage is unevenly distributed or when memory runs out. Thus, in this study, Write Handle Reusing is proposed to fully utilize memory in shuffle file writing and reading. Load Balancing Optimizer is introduced to ensure the even distribution of data processing across all worker nodes, and Memory-Aware Task Scheduler that coordinates concurrency level and memory usage is also developed to prevent memory spilling. Experimental results on representative workloads demonstrate that the proposed approaches can decrease the overall job execution time and improve memory efficiency. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Summary The nonuniform memory access (NUMA) architecture has been used extensively in data centers. Most of the previous works used single-threaded multiprogrammed workloads to study the performance of NUMA systems, which mainly focus on two classes of problems: resource contention and data locality. However, when running multi-threaded programs on NUMA systems, the critical thread of these programs significantly influences the system performance and brings new challenges that are different from those in a single-threaded situation. In particular, an additional scheduling scheme is desired to avoid the performance degradation caused by the critical thread of multi-threaded programs running on NUMA systems. This work presents a scheduler, Symmetrical Scheduler, which successfully solves the lagging problem by balancing the number of the costly remote shared data accesses for threads on NUMA systems. To the best of our knowledge, little work has been conducted to examine the performance impacted by the critical thread of multi-threaded programs on NUMA systems. By running the PARSEC benchmark on such systems, our methodology can improve the program performance by a factor of 6% on average and achieve maximally 25.3% improvement compared with Linux kernel scheduling mechanism. © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Android's permission system offers an all-or-nothing installation choice for users. To make it more flexible, users may choose a popular app tool, called permission manager, to selectively grant or revoke an app's permissions at runtime. A fundamental requirement for such permission manager is that the granted or revoked permissions should be enforced faithfully. However, we discover that none of existing permission managers meet this requirement due to permission leaks. To address this problem, we propose CICC, a finegrained, semantic-aware, and transparent approach for any permission managers to defend against the permission leaks. Compared to existing solutions, CICC is fine-grained because it detects the permission leaks using call-chain information at the component instance level, instead of at the app level or component level. The fine-grained feature enables it to generate a minimal impact on the usability of running apps. CICC is semantic-aware in a sense that it manages call-chains in the whole lifecycle of each component instance. CICC is transparent to users and app developers, and it requires minor modification to permission managers. Our evaluation shows that CICC incurs relatively low performance overhead and power consumption. Copyright 2015 ACM.

Recently, security issues are obstructing the development and using of cloud computing services. Authentication and integrity play an important role in the cloud security, and numerous concerns have been raised to recognize any tampering with exchanges of the image document between two entities (sender and receiver) within the cloud environment. However, none of the existing solutions reduce the probability of known attacks by combining cryptographic hash function with a strong factor that should be periodically changed. For this reason, in this paper we propose a robust one-time image document authentication scheme based on combining non-interactive onetime biometric key and a robust wavelet-based cryptographic hashing scheme. The result of the combination is one-time image document authentication code (OMAC). OMAC is hidden in an image document as a cover image through reversible data embedding steganography. The proposed scheme has several important security attributes, such as key agreement, biometric key management, robust OMAC, invulnerability, and efficiency. In biometric key management, key generation, key selection, and key update algorithms are performed autonomously by the sender and the receiver;thus, no interaction between them is needed. © 2015 IEEE.

It is a huge challenge to deploy a cloud computing system in large-scale data centers. In order to help resolve this issue, we propose an automatic cloud system deployment approach with the characteristics of reliability, availability, and load balance. Specifically, we use workflow to deal with the dependencies among the automatic deployment processes of a cloud system. We also design a failover mechanism to avoid the single point failure of the deployment server. Besides, we adopt a load balancing algorithm to solve the bottleneck problem of deploying a cloud system. We implement a prototype, and evaluate it with 16 physical nodes as well as a virtualized environment with 160 virtual machines. Experimental results show that the average deployment time under our approach is lower than that with traditional deployment methods. In addition, it achieves a cloud system deployment success ratio of up to 90%, even in the high-concurrency environment. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Recently, security issues are obstructing the development and using of cloud computing services. Authentication plays an important role in the cloud security, and numerous concerns have been raised to prevent an unauthorized users to access the entities' resources (sender and receiver) within the cloud environment. Existing solutions are based on one-time authentication scheme, in which a user's password is applicable only for one login session. However, none of the proposed schemes are sufficiently secure to prevent known forms of attack. In addition, these schemes often suffer from significant overhead in the key management. For this reason, we propose a robust one-time authentication scheme based on a non-interactive one-time biometric key to generate one-time login request message. The key used in our scheme has two strong building blocks, that is, it is biometrically based on the extraction of features from the entities' irises, and cryptographically based on the strong key-based message authentication code MAC-SHA-512 and Rivest Cipher 4. The proposed scheme exhibits several important security attributes, such as key agreement, biometric key management, a single authentication request for each user's login, mutual authentication, invulnerability, and efficiency.

Outsourced data in cloud and computation results are not always trustworthy because data owners lack physical possession and control over the data as a result of virtualization, replication, and migration techniques. Protecting outsourced data from security threats has become a challenging and potentially formidable task in cloud computing;hence, many schemes have focused on ameliorating this problem and on enabling public auditability for cloud data storage security. These schemes drop into two categories: total computation cost and burden on client side. Researchers have used bilinear map technology with public key cryptography. Although this technology is highly efficient, computation time is long and overhead cost is high. The client needs to perform numerous computations to ensure the integrity of data storage. To reduce auditing cost, we propose an efficient and robust scheme to maintain data integrity in cases that involve public auditing. Our scheme adopts modern cipher cryptography with a cryptographic hash function. We consider allowing a third party auditor to preprocess data on behalf of cloud users before uploading them to cloud service providers and then verifying data integrity afterward. Our proposed scheme has important security characteristics, such as privacy, key management, low cost computation, key exchange, low overhead cost, no burden on client side, inability of cloud service providers to create correct verifier respond without data, and one-time key. Finally, efficiency analysis shows that our scheme is faster and more cost-efficient than the bilinear map-based scheme. © 2015 IEEE.

Hadoop/MapReduce has emerged as a de facto programming framework to explore cloud-computing resources. Hadoop has many configuration parameters, some of which are crucial to the performance of MapReduce jobs. In practice, these parameters are usually set to default or inappropriate values. This severely limits system performance (e.g., execution time). Therefore, it is essential but also challenging to investigate how to automatically tune these parameters to optimize MapReduce job performance. In this paper, we propose an automatic MapReduce configuration optimization framework named as MR-COF. By monitoring and analyzing the runtime behavior, the framework adopts a cost-based performance prediction model that predicts the MapReduce job performance. In addition, we design a genetic search algorithm which iteratively tunes parameters in order to find out the best one. Testbed-based experimental results show that the average MapReduce job performance is increased by 35% with MR-COF compared to the default configuration. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Modern GPUs have been widely used to accelerate the graph processing for complicated computational problems regarding graph theory. Many parallel graph algorithms adopt the asynchronous computing model to accelerate the iterative convergence. Unfortunately, the consistent asynchronous computing requires locking or the atomic operations, leading to significant penalties/overheads when implemented on GPUs. To this end, coloring algorithm is adopted to separate the vertices with potential updating conflicts, guaranteeing the consistency/correctness of the parallel processing. We propose a light-weight asynchronous processing framework called Frog with a hybrid coloring model. We find that majority of vertices (about 80%) are colored with only a few colors, such that they can be read and updated in a very high degree of parallelism without violating the sequential consistency. Accordingly, our solution will separate the processing of the vertices based on the distribution of colors.

Indexing microblogs for realtime search is challenging, because new microblogs are created at tremendous speed, and user query requests keep constantly changing. To guarantee user obtain complete query results, micro-blogging site maintains huge indices which leads to index fragmentation or extra merging overhead during realtime search. This paper proposes an efficient Log-Structured index structure with Adaptive Merging Strategy (LS-AMS) for realtime search on microblogs. LS-AMS structure consists of an inverted index buffer and a sequence of dynamically adjustable index packages with exponentially increasing sizes. These index packages manage their inverted indices using adaptive merging strategy, which can reduce the merging overhead to improve query performance and can adjust the index structure based on environmental factors, such as the arrival rate of query requests and new microblogs. Experimental results show that LS-AMS can greatly improve query performance without increasing the update cost and improve the self-adaptability in dynamic environment. © 2015 IEEE.
