Virtual machine (VM) level checkpoints bring several advantages which process-level checkpoint implementation can hardly provide: compatibility, transparence, flexibility, and simplicity. However, the size of VM-level checkpoint may be very large and even in the order of gigabytes. This disadvantage causes the VM checkpointing and restart time become very long. To reduce the size of VM checkpoint, this paper proposes a memory exclusion scheme using ballooning mechanism, which omits saving unnecessary free pages in the VM. We implement our prototype in Xen environment. Experimental measurements show our approach can significantly reduce the size of VM checkpoint with minimal runtime overhead, thereby greatly improve the checkpoint performance.

Virtual desktop environment (VDE) provides a real virtual working environment in which users could personally customize and update the application list from application template libraries. The heterogeneous applications actually running in the remote application servers could cooperatively communicate with each other. It is a thin client approach to mobility in which the perfect combination of VM technology and DFS technology are the keys to the rapid seamless resuming of the usage scenarios. Usage scenarios are incrementally suspended including the user's documents and the running applications. The usage data stored in data center provides a unified view for the users through historical scenario manager and ensures the data's security and reliability at the same time. This paper explores the building policy of a real virtual working environment and the suspending/resuming policy of usage scenarios. Experiments demonstrate and evaluate VDE's efficiency and effectiveness.

Interval type-2 fuzzy set is the most popular kind of type-2 fuzzy set, its characteristic is that all the secondary membership functions equal to 1. Though interval type-2 fuzzy sets can reduce the calculation complexity than other type-2 fuzzy sets, it loses much fuzzy information simultaneously. In order to solve this problem we propose a novel theory of triangle type-2 fuzzy sets, the formulas for union, intersection and complement of triangle type-2 fuzzy sets are derived and proven in detail. In addition, the relationship and the conversion between triangle type-2 fuzzy sets and interval type-2 fuzzy sets are discussed.

Most of the current dynamic binary translation (DBT) systems are single-threaded and many orders of magnitude slower than native execution. Although multi-core processors are becoming more and more prevalent, the single-threaded architecture prevents these DBT systems from improving their performance by making full use of the parallel execution advantage. In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a multi-threaded DBT system, named MT-BTRIMER. MT-BTRIMER employs a master-slave multi-threaded architecture. We evaluate the MT-BTRIMER system across SPEC CINT 2000 and BYTEmark test suite. The results demonstrate that MT-BTRIMER can speculatively translate on average 60% of useful target code, and reduce the total runtime by nearly 30% compared with ST-BTRIMER which is a single-threaded DBT system.

With the development of computer science, desktop virtualization technology is more and more popular. In virtualized desktop, it is a very significant research to share periphery devices in the client-end computer seamlessly. We implement a device sharing mechanism to extend the universal serial bus in client-end host to the network for server-end host using transparently. This virtual device bus is deployed in the driver layer so that most applications and drivers in virtualized desktop could access remote shared devices through original interface. After deploying the virtual device bus driver, the duplicated virtual device could be accessed just like a real local device. In our implementation, the virtual device bus driver, which is the main module for virtualizing real USB devices and the interface for applications, is OS independent. Experiments show that the mechanism has a very friendly and easy interface to access virtual USB devices, and good performance.

Virtualization as a powerful and convenient technique has been widely used recently. Inserting the VMM between the hardware and operation system enables multiple virtual machines simultaneously running on hardware. However, these changes in system architecture, while improving the whole physical computing resources' utilization, also pay a certain price for virtualization. How to measure this part of CPU overhead, and how about the relationship between this part of CPU overhead and virtual machine number and the type of workload executing in virtual machine are two important questions to the further research of virtualization performance. In this paper we provide a system to measure the overhead of virtualization. With this system we could dynamically obtain the utilization of computing resource. Based on the analysis to the results of several experiments, we compare and study the relationship between the different factors and the overhead of virtualization. Finally, we predict the probably trend of the overhead under the impact of some factors.

Introducing the P2P (Peer-to-Peer) technology into SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) networks can improve VoIP (Voice on Internet Protocol) system's reliability and scalability, and reduce the operating costs. In order to provide better and more comprehensive services in VoIP system, it is necessary to communicate with the traditional telecommunications networks, including PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network), by a voice gateway. The voice gateway system for P2P-based SIP VoIP builds the connection, and transforms signaling and media, between IP service network and PSTN. SIP-in-P2P is implemented in voice gateway system, using DHT (Distributed Hash Table) scheme to connect VGW (Voice Gateway) nodes in the P2P SIP network. Based on the GWMN (Gateway Management Node) protocol, the system can manage VGW nodes in the management domain, and designed the discovery strategies and load balancing strategies to improve the performance. Results indicate that the voice gateway system performs with good reliability, scalability, interoperability and feasibility.

Virtualization enables multiple guest operating systems run on a single physical platform. These virtual machines may host any types of application, including concurrent HPC programs. Traditionally, VMM schedulers have focused on fairly sharing the processor resources among domains, rarely consider VCPUs' behaviors. However, this can result in poor application performance to overcommitted domains if there are concurrent programs hosted in them. In this paper we review the properties of both Xen's Credit and SEDF schedulers, and show how these schedulers may seriously impact the performance of the communication-intensive and I/O-intensive concurrent applications in overcommitted domains. We discuss the origination of the problem theoretically, and confirm the derived conclusion on benchmarks. A novel approach, that dynamically scales the context switching-frequency by selecting variable time slices according to VCPUs` behaviors, is then proposed to improve the Credit scheduler more adaptive for concurrent applications. The experimental results show that this extended Credit scheduler can improve the performance of communication-intensive and I/O-intensive concurrent applications in overcommitted domains to the same magnitude as in undercommitted domains.

With the resurgence of virtual machine technology, vendors build virtualization technology support in the processors. Virtual machines relying on such support are called Hardware-assisted Virtual Machines (HVM guests for short). Although HVM guests have the advantage that they do not need to revise the source code of operating systems running inside, the processing of I/O operations in HVM is much complicated and the performance of such operations are rather low. In this paper, we conduct a performance study on the Web server running inside the HVM guests by using queuing network modeling technique, and analyze the performance bottlenecks of the systems.

Multi-version graph processing has been widely used to solve many real-world problems. The process of the multi-version graph processing typically includes: (1) a history graph version switching at a specific time and (2) graph processing on this history graph. Existing multi-version graph systems assume ideally that every request for a particular graph version at a particular time will have a corresponding snapshot available. However, in most cases, this is not true. Then existing solutions usually have to settle with an "approximating"version as a substitute, leading to unexpected results for the underlying graph algorithm and thus reducing the practicality of a multi-version graph system for many application scenarios *** this paper, we observe that only a few graph updates have a great impact on the final results. We therefore present AFaVS, a novel multi-version graph system that can improve accuracy effectively in both time- and memory-efficient manners. The cornerstone of AFaVS lies in a novel concept "value"that characterizes the importance of graph updates. AFaVS proposes differential management of updates based on their values and achieves higher accuracy while preserving processing and memory efficiency. AFaVS is also equipped with value-guided version switching and locality-aware optimizations to boost its overall efficiency. Our results on a variety of real-world datasets show that AFaVS outperforms four state-of-the-art multi-version graph systems by 74.35%~95.72% in terms of accuracy improvement and 57.03%~90.44% in terms of memory reduction while introducing less than 2.96% extra computing time. We have deployed AFaVS in a disaster recovery system on the production cluster of Alibaba, achieving 78.8%~90.1% fewer error rates than advanced systems at a comparable efficiency. © 2023 IEEE.
