With the resurgence of virtual machine technology, vendors build virtualization technology support in the processors. Virtual machines relying on such support are called Hardware-assisted Virtual Machines (HVM guests for short). Although HVM guests have the advantage that they do not need to revise the source code of operating systems running inside, the processing of I/O operations in HVM is much complicated and the performance of such operations are rather low. In this paper, we conduct a performance study on the Web server running inside the HVM guests by using queuing network modeling technique, and analyze the performance bottlenecks of the systems.

Resurgence of virtualization calls for suitable benchmark to validate the design of virtualization system. Among the virtual machines' performance, I/O especially disk I/O is the most critical one. Since I/O is a key factor that impacts virtual machine performance, this paper introduces a benchmark-vBench for disk I/O micro-performance evaluation of virtual machine. vBench is mainly consisted of serial disk I/O evaluation and parallel disk I/O evaluation. Since error during test is inevitable, for the purpose of error correction, we design an efficient approach which we runs the same workloads in two loops, then the execution times of two loops minus each other. The approach can correctly deal with loop overhead. To prevent compiler from optimizing the code and lead to the wrong execution time of workloads, vBench is embedded inline assembly code. vBench provides the performance evaluation for system call of disk I/O, application level disk I/O and parallel disk I/O. Disk I/O performance evaluation of vBench can measure disk I/O micro-performance of virtual machine in certain extreme conditions. Experiments show that the results of vBench are accurate and vBench can reflect the disk I/O performance of the virtual machines correctly. Therefore, vBench is more accurate, more reliable than the traditional benchmarks and more suitable for evaluating virtual machine disk I/O performance.

Multi-version graph processing has been widely used to solve many real-world problems. The process of the multi-version graph processing typically includes: (1) a history graph version switching at a specific time and (2) graph processing on this history graph. Existing multi-version graph systems assume ideally that every request for a particular graph version at a particular time will have a corresponding snapshot available. However, in most cases, this is not true. Then existing solutions usually have to settle with an "approximating"version as a substitute, leading to unexpected results for the underlying graph algorithm and thus reducing the practicality of a multi-version graph system for many application scenarios *** this paper, we observe that only a few graph updates have a great impact on the final results. We therefore present AFaVS, a novel multi-version graph system that can improve accuracy effectively in both time- and memory-efficient manners. The cornerstone of AFaVS lies in a novel concept "value"that characterizes the importance of graph updates. AFaVS proposes differential management of updates based on their values and achieves higher accuracy while preserving processing and memory efficiency. AFaVS is also equipped with value-guided version switching and locality-aware optimizations to boost its overall efficiency. Our results on a variety of real-world datasets show that AFaVS outperforms four state-of-the-art multi-version graph systems by 74.35%~95.72% in terms of accuracy improvement and 57.03%~90.44% in terms of memory reduction while introducing less than 2.96% extra computing time. We have deployed AFaVS in a disaster recovery system on the production cluster of Alibaba, achieving 78.8%~90.1% fewer error rates than advanced systems at a comparable efficiency. © 2023 IEEE.

In this work, we propose computing resource management system based on Xen VMM and multi-core system, called XenMVM. It adjusts the computing resource dynamically according to the actual workload generated by the applications running in the virtual machine to improve the resource utilization of the computer system. According to the shared L2 cache architecture of multi-core system, we propose the Underlying Layout Aware Scheduling (ULAS) which can schedule the virtual CPUs of virtual machines to the appropriate physical CPUs. The test result shows that ULAS can improve the performance about 4.5%~32.52%. Furthermore, to improve the whole performance of multiple virtual machines and meet the needs of specific jobs (i.e., urgent and I/O intensive) deployed in the virtual machines, a simplified method called Domain-based static priority is adopted in XenMVM. Using case studies we show that our proposal reduces the turnover time of the whole system by 20.45% compared with FCFS scheduling scheme.

The Delay Tolerant Network employs a store-carry-forward paradigm to enable bundle delivery in intermittent connected environments. A router relays a message only when a proper contact opportunity occurs, which results in prominent congestion issues. An appropriate scheduling and dropping policy can alleviate this situation and maximize contact capacity. We investigate the impact of delivery probability and number of message replicas over the efficiency of scheduling and dropping policies in probabilistic routing, and present a new way to utilize contact probability and delivery predictability to direct the design of scheduling policies. We also design a simple and distributed method to approximate the global number of replicas. We integrate these results and present a new scheduling and dropping policy. Simulation based on map based movement has shown that the new policy gains a delivery rate very close to global knowledge based policies, and it outperforms all other existing scheduling and dropping policies.

In P2P live streaming system, service will be degraded when thousands of semi-riders, peers with very limited outbound bandwidth, concurrently join. Due to the limited outbound bandwidth, a semi-rider peer always gets more data than its contributions. In this paper, we propose VolunteerLive, an incentive-based P2P live streaming model, to address this issue. In VolunteerLive, these asymmetrical users are encouraged to "deposit" their bandwidth resources to relay data using their network bandwidth resources. They can enjoy the services as semi-riders in the future. We also propose ContriMax, a heuristics data scheduling algorithm designed for volunteers to collect and maximize the contributions of them. Simulations have been conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed VolunteerLive and ContriMax. The results show that VolunteerLive model is feasible to support more semi-riders and greatly decrease the stress on the media server.

Virtualization can divide or aggregate the underlying resource flexibly, and it attracts attention from both academic and industry in recent years. Guest operating systems in virtual machines can be various, and the states of virtual machines changes all the time. Due to the complexity of virtual computing environment, it brings tremendous challenges for security monitoring. Existing monitoring mechanism can not adapt to the dynamic and diversity of virtual machines. Therefore, a comprehensive monitoring framework, named ComMon, is proposed in this paper, which implements comprehensive monitoring from three aspects: network, process, and file. It has the characteristics of real-time, transparency and generality.

When extending peer-to-peer live streaming system to IEEE 802.11-based wireless network, service guarantee for inter-domain movement is an obstacle since IEEE 802.11 has no QoS maintenance mechanism for it. The stream system must consider it itself. As a peer roams among adjacent networks, the streaming service will be interrupted by the disconnection of wireless network path and IP address changes. Here, a service guarantee mechanism is presented for the QoS of the wireless peer-to-peer living streaming while peer inter-domain roaming. A behavior prediction method based on wireless signal, a pre-caching strategy based on location, and a temp-storing strategy based on ability, are proposed to help the wireless peer rapidly resuming the topology and data transfer. The experiment results show that it can achieve good buffering for wireless roaming peers, which makes uninterrupted stream playing on mobile devices finally, when they roam among different domains.

Agent-based grid data loading method aims at integrating heterogeneous hospitalspsila information systems into a medical information exchange platform based on grid middleware. It collects distributed data sets for decision support system, which makes data sources expanded from independent database modes to medical information systems in wide area. Virtual data access with grid service improves data security and makes data modification in local system more flexible. HL7 protocol and middleware are utilized to transform HL7 data into various local data structures for keeping the independence of each hospital information system and providing more convenience and expansibility for various medical applications.

With the IT development, computer is more powerful and can accommodate more virtual servers than ever. Due to users' random requests, it is not economical to start all virtual servers beforehand. One reasonable approach is to start virtual servers dynamically. It will lead to varied performance in server consolidation. Thus, one of the key problems is how to evaluate dynamic performance of VMM in server consolidation. However, no evaluation approach for dynamic performance of VMM in server consolidation is available now. We present an approach to evaluate dynamic performance of VMM in server consolidation. The approach adopts popular application servers, such as Web and database server as workload. We firstly give the problem definition. Then we define performance metrics for evaluating dynamic performance of VMM in server consolidation. Finally, we use the approach to evaluate dynamic performance of VMM in server consolidation.
