Cloud security represents a main hindrance that causes to retard its widespread adoption. Authentication considers a significance element of security in cloud environment, aiming to verify a user's identity when a user wishes to request services from cloud. There are many authentication schemes that depend on username/password, but they are considered weak techniques of cloud authentication. A more secure scheme is the two-factor authentication that does not only verify the username/password pair, but also needs a second factor such as a token device, biometric. However, the feasibility of second-factor authentication is limited by the deployment complexity, high cost and the cloud security is compromised when the token is missing or purloined. Furthermore, these schemes are failed to resist well-known attacks such as replay attacks, reflection attacks. This paper proposes two-factor authentication scheme based on Schnorr digital signature and feature extraction from fingerprint to overcome above aforementioned issues. Security analysis and experimental results illustrate that our proposed scheme can withstand the common security attacks as well, and has a good performance of password authentication.

More and more enterprises are moving beyond server virtualization to desktop virtualization in recent years. In virtualization environments, centralized shared storage systems are generally used to take advantage of virtualization features such as VM migration. Network file system (NFS) is considered to be the best choice in small or medium sized LANs due to its flexibility and low cost. But it becomes the bottleneck when many clients access the server simultaneously, especially when multiple virtual machines access a large amount of data at the same time, such as operation save and restore. In this paper, we present a new method named ComIO to quickly save and restore virtual machines using page compression. Based on the analysis of virtual machines' memory characteristics, we design a fast enhanced characteristic-based compression (ECBC) algorithm. Combined with multi-threaded techniques, the compression tasks are parallelized for significantly shortened compresssion time. Page boundary alignment is proposed to enable wanted page data to be directly extracted from the compressed block. The experimental results demonstrate that compared with Xen, our method ComIO not only greatly reduces the time spent on saving and restoring virtual machines on average, but also indirectly augments the effective storage space.

In a virtual execution environment, dynamic computing resource adjustment technique, configuring the computing resource of virtual machines automatically according to the actual loads generated by applications, is often adopted in virtual machine monitor to improve the resource utilization rate. Traditionally, the simple Additive Increase Subtractive Decrease (AISD) scheme is used as an adjusting rule. However, in some special situations, for example, compiling kernel in a virtual machine, the configuration of virtual machines may change abruptly because of the violent vibration of workload during a short interval, and the threshing can inevitably result in additional overhead under AISD rule. In this paper, we extend the Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) algorithm and present a feedback control model for configuring virtual computing resources, and propose an innovative adjusting scheme called Forecasting and Time Delayed Subtraction (FTDS) to reduce the overhead caused by threshing. The FTDS uses both statistic history of resource requests and current utilization of computing resource to predict whether threshing happens and to determine how many and when to adjust the amount of virtual CPUs. Experimental results show that FTDS can effectively reduce the jitter occurred in adjusting and make the performance penalty for threshing decreased from 9% to 0.3% compared with AISD, while maintaining that in non-threshing cases the same as AISD.

This paper describes a method using grid technology to improve traffic algorithm efficiency. The method cooperates traffic status estimation algorithm with grid technology. It collects and preprocesses massive real-time data of taxi global positioning system (GPS) as floating car data as well as geographic Information systems (GIS) data of Shanghai urban road network. Then, it adopts grid technology to deal with computation for the shortest time path algorithm on traffic status estimation in real time. The results of experiment prove that the grid technology can greatly improve the computing efficiency of traffic status estimation model.

Inspired by the concept of cloud computing, the construction of HPC Cloud with traditional HPC resources not only provides new opportunities to address the challenges to the traditional HPC, but also brings many exciting research problems. One of them is how to reduce the network overhead of virtual cluster in HPC cloud. In order to resolve the problem, this paper presents the design and implementation of lightweight communication mechanism for virtual cluster in HPC Cloud, called LCM, which maintains binary compatibility for applications written in standard socket interface. We implemented our design on Xen 3.2 with Linux kernel 2.6.18, and evaluated the speed of file transfer, the running time of NAS Parallel benchmark and binary compatibility using binary image of real socket applications. In our tests, we have proved that LCM realizes the high performance that is comparable to UNIX domain socket and ensures full binary compatibility.

Text-based image search engine and content-based image retrieval (CBIR) have achieved much progress in commerce and academic community. In addition, a few attempts have been conducted to integrate the two techniques for image retrieval in web context. However, it is very difficult for general search engine based on image context to return highly accurate results. Compound face image retrieval system, based on a novel vertical web image retrieval framework, is designed to make comprehensive uses of text, image content and some related technologies in face detection and recognition. It incorporates high-level semantics and low-level visual features of web image and provides more accurate results and good extensibility for further applications.

Multiplayer Online Game has been extremely popular, in which peer-to-peer technology has been introduced to help with the scaling. This paper presents a measurement study on a P2P-based MOG supporting system, called PKTown, which has been fully deployed over the CERNET. By leveraging a large set of traces obtained recently over a 4-month period, we study the benefit of P2P architecture applying to MOG supporting system, workload characteristics, players' behaviors and impact form a number of system parameters. We believe this provides insights in understanding the fundamental nature of MOG, which can be further explored to enhance the system design.

The size of volumetric data generated by medical imaging and scientific simulations is increased significantly due to the dramatic advances in medical imaging modalities and computing technologies. The volumetric data generally need to be visualized and marching cubes algorithm (MC for short) is one of the standard methods of the isosurface extraction for the medical applications. However, MC algorithm requires a large amount of data computing power. The cell broadband engine (Cell for short) processor, which is a typical COTS (commodity off-the-shelf) heterogeneous designed to handle extremely demanding computations, can be used to hasten isosurface extraction in medial application. In this paper, we present a streaming model-based scheme to efficiently map MC algorithm to Cell. Specifically, a block-based filter running on PPE is imposed as a preprocessing stage to avoid unnecessary data transfer and computation, and the MC kernel runs on SPEs as the subsequent stage. Through tuning the size of the block, the workload of PPE and SPE is orchestrated harmoniously. The experimental results demonstrate that overall isosurface extraction speedup of more than 10 times is achieved compared with conventional heavy iron CPUs.

We design and implement a Mandatory Access Control (MAC) system in distributed virtual computing environment, named DVM-MAC, aiming to provide distributed trust through enforcing MAC policies. In DVM-MAC, Prioritized Chinese Wall (PCW) model is implemented to control potential covert channels between VMs in both single node and distributed environment. A policy enforcement module locates inside Xen VMM for better enforcing MAC locally rather than outside the VMM. DVM-MAC adopts centralized architecture for multi-level management and secure transmission of inter-node policy information. For performance consideration, a specific policy decision and enforcement module for controlling inter-node behaviors is moved out of Xen VMM and up to user space. DVM-MAC authorizes a specific center node named Central Security Server (CSS) to be responsible for the decision making between the nodes as well as leaves the inter-node policy enforcement module in each node. Through our experiments and data analysis, we verify the correctness, effectiveness, and efficiency in our prototype when implementing PCW model.

Chip multi-processor (CMP) increases processor throughput by duplicating resources for many threads. Due to the main frequency of a single processor approaching to limit, CMP is becoming more and more popular. However, it is not well studied how to evaluate a new CMP design by simulation. This paper analyzes the possible organizations of cores on a CMP and then presents a mathematical model for the simulation times. It also provides a sampling policy used to reduce the simulation times. The sampling experiments show that the simulation time is 7.5 days under condition that the required confidence level is 95% and confidence interval is 4 when the benchmarks in SPEC CPU2000 are used. As for the simulation of CMPs, the simulation time is very short.
