Dynamic searchable symmetric encryption (DSSE) enables users to delegate the keyword search over dynamically updated encrypted databases to an honest-but-curious server without losing keyword privacy. This paper studies a new and practical security risk to DSSE, namely, secret key compromise (e.g., a user’s secret key is leaked or stolen), which threatens all the security guarantees offered by existing DSSE schemes. To address this open problem, we introduce the notion of searchable encryption with key-update (SEKU) that provides users with the option of non-interactive key updates. We further define the notion of post-compromise secure with respect to leakage functions to study whether DSSE schemes can still provide data security after the client’s secret key is compromised. We demonstrate that post-compromise security is achievable with a proposed protocol called "Bamboo". Interestingly, the leakage functions of Bamboo satisfy the requirements for both forward and backward security. We conduct a performance evaluation of Bamboo using a real-world dataset and compare its runtime efficiency with the existing forward-and-backward secure DSSE schemes. Modern large-scale cloud platforms require live migration technique on Docker containers with stateful workload to support load balancing, host maintenance, and Quality of Service (QoS) improvement. Efficient and scalable Docker live migration is expected to guarantee the component-integrity (image, runtime, and management context) with negligible downtime. In this paper, we present a highly efficient live migration system called Sledge, which ensures the component-integrity by integrating both images and management context during runtime migration. The key insight is that the layered image can be leveraged to reduce the migration overhead, and appropriately selective migration of management context will effectively improve QoS with negligible downtime. To achieve good scalability, a lightweight container registry mechanism for end-to-end image migration is designed to avoid the redundant layers transmission. In addition, a dynamic context loading scheme is proposed to precisely load the management context into the running daemon, which can significantly reduce downtime. Experiments show that, compared with the state-of-the-art, Sledge reduces 57% of total migration time, 55% of image migration time, and 70% downtime.

Low bandwidth-oriented remote screen synchronization approach

This paper presents an approach for remote screen synchronization by applying the association of spatio-temporal redundancy reductions (ASTR). The temporal redundancy between the current changed screen area and the previous frame is taken into account. By applying an improved SSC-APDS (Subsampling Search Candidates in Adjustable Partial Distortion Search) algorithm, the speed of the block motion estimation is increased obviously. Experimental results approve that this approach can save more bandwidth in transferring the screen data and reduce the overhead of the client. It has been used in a practical wireless application for conference projecting and cooperating named FreeSpeech with good performance.

grid scheduling which aims at improving resource utilization and grid application performance is a key concern in grid. Currently, much research can be found about grid scheduling and some algorithms on it were proposed. However, since grid resources are autonomic, distributed and their status change over time, those scheduling algorithms did not fit for the cases well. In this paper, a cache based feedback grid scheduling (CBFS) approach is presented to capture the dynamics and impact of simultaneously co-allocated tasks in a grid. In this approach, grid scheduler utilizes recent resource performance data, such as recent task submitting time and execution time of task which are kept in cache and a feedback approach to engineer load balancing across multiple grid resources. After comparing this dynamic grid scheduling approach with previous research, it is found that CBFS is more generous than other scheduling approaches. Experimental results demonstrate that this approach diminishes latency and contributes to the overall grid load balancing, which significantly improves resource utilization and response time of tasks.

Background: Improving the accessibility of screening diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from non-diabetic kidney disease (NDKD) are two major challenges in the field of diabetes care. We aimed to develop and validate an artificial intelligence (AI) deep learning system to detect DKD and isolated diabetic nephropathy from retinal fundus images. Methods: In this population-based study, we developed a retinal image-based AI-deep learning system, DeepDKD, pretrained using 734 084 retinal fundus images. First, for DKD detection, we used 486 312 retinal images from 121 578 participants in the Shanghai Integrated Diabetes Prevention and Care System for development and internal validation, and ten multi-ethnic datasets from China, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and the UK (65 406 participants) for external validation. Second, to differentiate isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD, we used 1068 retinal images from 267 participants for development and internal validation, and three multi-ethnic datasets from China, Malaysia, and the UK (244 participants) for external validation. Finally, we conducted two proof-of-concept studies: a prospective real-world study with 3 months' follow-up to evaluate the effectiveness of DeepDKD in screening DKD;and a longitudinal analysis of the effectiveness of DeepDKD in differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD on renal function changes with 4·6 years' follow-up. Findings: For detecting DKD, DeepDKD achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0·842 (95% CI 0·838–0·846) on the internal validation dataset and AUCs of 0·791–0·826 across external validation datasets. For differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD, DeepDKD achieved an AUC of 0·906 (0·825–0·966) on the internal validation dataset and AUCs of 0·733–0·844 across external validation datasets. Graft: Efficient Inference Serving for Hybrid Deep Learning with SLO Guarantees via DNN Re-alignment

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have been widely adopted for various mobile inference tasks, yet their ever-increasing computational demands are hindering their deployment on resource-constrained mobile devices. Hybrid deep learning partitions a DNN into two parts and deploys them across the mobile device and a server, aiming to reduce inference latency or prolong battery life of mobile devices. However, such partitioning produces (non-uniform) DNN fragments which are hard to serve efficiently on the server. This paper presents Graft—an efficient inference serving system for hybrid deep learning with latency service-level objective (SLO) guarantees. Our main insight is to mitigate the non-uniformity by a core concept called DNN re-alignment, allowing multiple heterogeneous DNN fragments to be restructured to share layers. To fully exploit the potential of DNN re-alignment, Graft employs fine-grained GPU resource sharing. Based on that, we propose efficient algorithms for merging, grouping, and re-aligning DNN fragments to maximize request batching opportunities, minimizing resource consumption while guaranteeing the inference latency SLO. We implement a Graft prototype and perform extensive experiments with five types of widely used DNNs and real-world network traces. Our results show that Graft improves resource efficiency by up to 70% compared with the state-of-the-art inference serving systems. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

Key distribution strategy of security multicast in grid

In grid, it is an important strategy that using multicast to realize the large-scale information resource sharing. However, it is very difficult to ensure the security of multicast. In this paper, based on the basic principles of the centralized key distributed strategy and the distributed key distribution strategy, according to the multicast mechanism in grid, considering the dynamic factors of multicast members, we present the member hierarchy method for key distribution, the member discovery protocol, the clustering protocol and the key distribution strategy, thus constituting the key distribution strategy of security multicast in grid. In order to validate the feasibility and the availability of this strategy, a simulation experiment is done. The results show that it is feasible and efficient to ensure the security multicast in grid.

As software engineering advances and the code demand rises, the prevalence of code clones has increased. This phenomenon poses risks like vulnerability propagation, underscoring the growing importance of code clone detection techniques. While numerous code clone detection methods have been proposed, they often fall short in real-world code environments. They either struggle to identify code clones effectively or demand substantial time and computational resources to handle complex clones. This paper introduces a code clone detection method namely Toma using tokens and machine learning. Specifically, we extract token type sequences and employ six similarity calculation methods to generate feature vectors. These vectors are then input into a trained machine learning model for classification. To evaluate the effectiveness and scalability of Toma, we conduct experiments on the widely used BigCloneBench dataset. Results show that our tool outperforms token-based code clone detectors and most tree-based clone detectors, demonstrating high effectiveness and significant time savings.

Software systems often encounter various errors or exceptions in practice, and thus proper error handling code is essential to ensure the reliability of software systems. Unfortunately, error handling code is often bug-prone, while sufficiently testing them is challenging as such code often cannot be triggered under normal conditions. Motivated by this, recent studies have proposed to leverage software fault injection (SFI) based fuzzing to discover potential bugs in complicated error handling code. Despite the promising results achieved, their effectiveness and efficiency are still compromised in practice due to the huge search space of error sites, inadequate fuzzing guidance, and the overhead induced by context-sensitive SFI. To achieve effective and efficient testing of error handling code, this study presents AFL-FI, which first utilizes a similarity-based method to identify suspicious error sites, and then incorporates the idea of error site coverage to guide the fuzzing process. Finally, the design of lightweight context-sensitive SFI enables AFL-FI to execute test cases efficiently. We evaluate AFL-FI on eight large-scale open-source projects, and the results show that it can outperform existing state-of-the-art fuzzing tools significantly in terms of branch code coverage. More importantly, AFL-FI has discovered 13 previously unknown bugs, and all of them have been confirmed while 12 of them have been fixed. Besides, our evaluation also demonstrates that all the key designs of AFL- F I are effective that contribute significantly to its overall performance.

SMT solvers check the satisfiability of logic formulas over first-order theories, which have been utilized in a rich number of critical applications, such as software verification, test case generation, and program synthesis. Bugs hidden in SMT solvers would severely mislead those applications and further cause severe consequences. Therefore, ensuring the reliability and robustness of SMT solvers is of critical importance. Although many approaches have been proposed to test SMT solvers, it is still a challenge to discover bugs effectively. To tackle such a challenge, we conduct an empirical study on the historical bug-triggering formulas in SMT solvers' bug tracking systems. We observe that the historical bug-triggering formulas contain valuable skeletons (i.e., core structures of formulas) as well as associated atomic formulas which can cast significant impacts on formulas' ability in triggering bugs. Therefore, we propose a novel approach that utilizes the skeletons extracted from the historical bug-triggering formulas and enumerates atomic formulas under the guidance of association rules derived from historical formulas. In this study, we realized our approach as a practical fuzzing tool HistFuzz and conducted extensive testing on the well-known SMT solvers Z3 and cvc5. To date, HistFuzz has found 111 confirmed new bugs for Z3 and cvc5, of which 108 have been fixed by the developers. More notably, out of the confirmed bugs, 23 are soundness bugs and invalid model bugs found in the solvers' default mode, which are essential for SMT solvers. In addition, our experiments also demonstrate that HistFuzz outperforms the state-of-the-art SMT solver fuzzers in terms of achieved code coverage and effectiveness.
