The emerging service grids bring together various distributed application-level services to a 'market' for clients to request and enable the integration of services across distributed, heterogeneous, dynamic virtual organizations. However, there are a number of applications with the requirement of time constraints. We propose a real-time strategy in service grid architecture. As the degree of virtualization is growing considerably, improving performance of virtual machine environments motivates deeper investigation of the internal processes and performance implications of virtualization. Several tools are currently available to help analyze performance in virtual machine environments. However, all of these cannot support users to add their own trace information. In this paper, we present Xenrelay, a unified, efficient, and simple mechanism for transferring large amounts of data from guest domain kernel to privileged domain user-space. Xenrelay allows users (who trace subsystems of guest domain to analyze performance) to record and fast relay data between domains. We provide a case of Xenrelay's value in revealing behavior of virtualization. We build a block trace toolkit (using Xenrelay as an engine). This toolkit is used to track the block I/O virtualization procedures and evaluates overheads in the Xen environment. Our trace results identify that the main delay is the time of request transmission and block device operation. Besides, the results reveal impact of the I/O schedules on the disk performance.

Efficient service discovery in dynamic, cross-organizational is one of the challenge aspects in Chinagrid. Network overlay and search algorithms are two important considerations to the problem. Tree topology of organizations is easily managed but the root is a single point of failure; P2P structure tends to be conversed. To merge the advantages of both, we present a hybrid system with two layers: tree layer and peer layer. This structure is practical because organizations targeting at sub objects of a subject are inclined to be organized hierarchically as a superpeer; and all these superpeers construct an unstructured P2P network that adapts to peer's interest by learn neighbor algorithm. Experimental evaluation shows that our mechanism exhibits better search performance than fully hierarchical or fully distributed system

GlobalWatch is a distributed platform to monitor various resources of grid platforms so as to improve the flexibility and usability of grid systems. In order to enhance the flexibility, we make improvements from three aspects. 1) We take advantage of both centralized and decentralized methods in the architecture and adopt a loosely coupled architecture to get monitored data; 2) We integrate GlobalWatch with VO (Virtual Organization) concept so as to make it compatible with grid circumstances. 3) We design a XML format to make GlobalWatch flexible for users to submit and receive information. In order to enhance the usability, we not only integrate various functions into GlobalWatch client application, but also make the visual effect better than some other monitoring platforms. At last, we conclude from the experimental result that monitored nodes in GlobalWatch are indeed loosely coupled and the transmission of map data is the main bottleneck in server end

Summary form only given. We present a new socket handoff scheme to eliminate the fake 3-way handshaking in almost all previous socket handoff systems. The new scheme does not involve the implementation details of TCP/IP protocol stack, thus greatly simplify the implementation and improve the portability of socket handoff systems. We also have developed a socket handoff system, called SHAK, as a Linux kernel module to verify the feasibility of the new scheme.

In intrusion detection system, signature discovery is an important issue, since the performance of an intrusion detection system heavily depends on the accuracy and abundance of signatures. In most cases, we have to find these signatures manually. This is a time-consuming and error-prone work. Some researchers apply data mining to the intrusion detection system. However, they are almost for anomal IDS detection. In this paper, we use a causal knowledge based on inference technique to discover useful signature for intrusion, and to raise the detection performance. The paper presents how Hsiao's sequential approach and finite automata are used in the causal knowledge acquisition and to support the causal knowledge reasoning process.

A novel approach, based on the execution state of distributed programs, is proposed in this paper, called Aeneas. It is for the real-time performance analysis of distributed programs with reliability-constrains. In Aeneas, there are two important factors, the available data files and the transmission paths of each available data file. Some algorithms are designed to find all the transmission paths of each data file needed while the program executes, count the transmission time for each transmission path, then get the aggregate transmission time, calculate the fastest and the slowest response time of distributed programs with reliability-constrains. A representative case is analyzed, and the results show that it is an efficient way to evaluate the real-time performance of distributed programs with reliability-constrains.

The design and implementation of SemreX is studied in this paper, which is a semantic Peer-to-Peer (P2P) scientific references sharing system. Compared with other systems, SemreX extracts the bibliographic information from the PDF file directly, categorizes the paper into a sub-field of ACM Topic based on the semantic matching, and provides PDF file exchanging and comments of papers sharing in the P2P manner. The routing algorithms in the prototype system are discussed, and the heterogeneous reference formats are investigated, which is an obstacle needs to be cleared to improve the accuracy of extraction.

For traditional client-server streaming service pattern, a centralized multimedia stream server serves client's requests. But with the increasing popularity of streaming applications, this pattern introduces new challenges over best-effort network: high latency and loss rates can not provide good quality audio/video streaming to client, centralized server has a limit on delivering many simultaneously streams, the same stream sessions can not share data between each other. To address these issues, we deploy a streaming proxy server close to client to cache media objects in memory and disk to reduce the network traffic, the server load and the data delivery latency. In this paper, we propose a novel cache of streaming proxy server based on cluster architecture. In particular, dynamic shared running memory cache (DSRMC), network prefetch and cache admission policy are integrated in streaming caching design. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of this novel cache.
