This paper focuses on mitigating the impact of stragglers in distributed learning system. Unlike the existing results designated for a fixed number of stragglers, we develop a new scheme called Adaptive Gradient Coding (AGC) with flexible communication cost for varying number of stragglers. Our scheme gives an optimal tradeoff between computation load, straggler tolerance and communication cost by allowing workers to send multiple signals sequentially to the master. In particular, it can minimize the communication cost according to the unknown real-time number of stragglers in practical environments. In addition, we present a Group AGC (G-AGC) by combining the group idea with AGC to resist more stragglers in some situations. The numerical and simulation results demonstrate that our adaptive schemes can achieve the smallest average running time. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The rapid increase in Android malware has brought great challenges to malware analysis. To deal with such a severe situation, it has been proposed an effective way which groups malware with common behaviors into the same malware family. Although there are many methods for malware family classification, the most critical and primary step is always the definition of sensitive behavior in an application, which will be beneficial for the later classification task. Much existing literature has manually selected sensitive features, such as permission, or even designed graph-based features via the control flow graph. They heavily depend on expert knowledge and time-consuming malware application analysis, which means it has to focus on the mal ware itself to dig out valuable security knowledge at first. However, the zooming malware overwhelms such expensive feature definition methods. To overcome such a problem, we adopt a knowledge graph-based sensitive feature selection method for Android mal ware classification. Based on the Android Developer documentation, an Android API knowledge graph is constructed at first. We can obtain not only permission but also related critical API from this graph. Note that both hyperlink relation and similarity relation are used to find out the critical API. With the knowledge graph-based sensitive features, we represent each Android malware as a boolean feature vector and send it in to a machine learning classifier for malware classification. We evaluate our proposed methods on three well-known Android malware datasets, such as Genome, Drebin, and AMD. The experimental results show that: 1) our proposed sensitive API is advantageous for malware detection; 2) API chosen by similarity relation can marginally improve performance; 3) different permission groups also make an influence for classification.

Background: Improving the accessibility of screening diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from non-diabetic kidney disease (NDKD) are two major challenges in the field of diabetes care. We aimed to develop and validate an artificial intelligence (AI) deep learning system to detect DKD and isolated diabetic nephropathy from retinal fundus images. Methods: In this population-based study, we developed a retinal image-based AI-deep learning system, DeepDKD, pretrained using 734 084 retinal fundus images. First, for DKD detection, we used 486 312 retinal images from 121 578 participants in the Shanghai Integrated Diabetes Prevention and Care System for development and internal validation, and ten multi-ethnic datasets from China, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and the UK (65 406 participants) for external validation. Second, to differentiate isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD, we used 1068 retinal images from 267 participants for development and internal validation, and three multi-ethnic datasets from China, Malaysia, and the UK (244 participants) for external validation. Finally, we conducted two proof-of-concept studies: a prospective real-world study with 3 months' follow-up to evaluate the effectiveness of DeepDKD in screening DKD;and a longitudinal analysis of the effectiveness of DeepDKD in differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD on renal function changes with 4·6 years' follow-up. Findings: For detecting DKD, DeepDKD achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0·842 (95% CI 0·838–0·846) on the internal validation dataset and AUCs of 0·791–0·826 across external validation datasets. For differentiating isolated diabetic nephropathy from NDKD, DeepDKD achieved an AUC of 0·906 (0·825–0·966) on the internal validation dataset and AUCs of 0·733–0·844 across external validation datasets. The development of fault-tolerant quantum processors relies on the ability to control noise. A particularly insidious form of noise is temporally correlated or non-Markovian noise. By combining randomized benchmarking with supervised machine learning algorithms, we develop a method to learn the details of temporally correlated noise. In particular, we can learn the time-independent evolution operator of system plus bath and this leads to (i) the ability to characterize the degree of non-Markovianity of the dynamics and (ii) the ability to predict the dynamics of the system even beyond the times we have used to train our model. We exemplify this by implementing our method on a superconducting quantum processor. Our experimental results show a drastic change between the Markovian and non-Markovian regimes for the learning accuracies. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The volume of RDF data continues to grow over the past decade and many known RDF datasets have billions of triples. A grant challenge of managing this huge RDF data is how to access this big RDF data efficiently. A popular approach to addressing the problem is to build a full set of permutations of (S, P, O) indexes. Although this approach has shown to accelerate joins by orders of magnitude, the large space overhead limits the scalability of this approach and makes it heavyweight. In this paper, we present TripleBit +, a fast and compact system for updating RDF data. The design of TripleBit + has two salient features. First, the efficient maintenance strategies of TripleBit + reduces both the overhead to update data and indexes. Second, effective maintenance technologies to handle online updates over RDF repositories are proposed. Our experiments show that TripleBit + outperforms RDF-3X, MonetDB, BitMat on LUBM, UniProt, and BTC 2012 benchmark queries and it offers orders of mangnitude performance improvement for some complex join queries. Our design also yields high task rates as high as 660,000 per second and fast average response time of task which is faster than x-RDF-3X and PostgreSQL. © 2018 IEEE.

VulDeeLocator: A deep learning-based fine-grained vulnerability detector

Automatically detecting software vulnerabilities is an important problem that has attracted much attention from the academic research community. However, existing vulnerability detectors still cannot achieve the vulnerability detection capability and the locating precision that would warrant their adoption for real-world use. In this paper, we present a vulnerability detector that can simultaneously achieve a high detection capability and a high locating precision, dubbed Vulnerability Deep learning-based Locator (VulDeeLocator). In the course of designing VulDeeLocator, we encounter difficulties including how to accommodate semantic relations between the definitions of types as well as macros and their uses across files, how to accommodate accurate control flows and variable define-use relations, and how to achieve high locating precision. We solve these difficulties by using two innovative ideas: (i) leveraging intermediate code to accommodate extra semantic information, and (ii) using the notion of granularity refinement to pin down locations of vulnerabilities. When applied to 200 files randomly selected from three real-world software products, VulDeeLocator detects 18 confirmed vulnerabilities (i.e., true-positives). Among them, 16 vulnerabilities correspond to known vulnerabilities;the other two are not reported in the National Vulnerability Database (NVD) but have been "silently" patched by the vendor of Libav when releasing newer versions. Hybrid followee recommendation in microblogging systems

Followee recommendation plays an important role in information sharing over microblogging platforms. Existing followee recommendation schemes adopt either content relevance or social information for followee ranking, suffering poor performance. Based on the observation that microblogging systems have dual roles of social network and news media platform, we propose a novel followee recommendation scheme that takes into account the information sources of both tweet contents and the social structures. We set up a linear weighted model to combine the two factors and further design a simulated annealing algorithm to automatically assign the weights of both factors in order to achieve an optimized combination of them. We conduct comprehensive experiments on real-world datasets collected from Sina Weibo, the largest microblogging system in China. The results demonstrate that our scheme provides a much more accurate followee recommendation for a user compared to existing schemes.

Modern bookcrossing leverages the mobile networks to help readers share books via convenient connection, and thus expedites the dissemination of information. However, the lack of traceability has significantly hindered the wide adoption of mobile bookcrossing, leading to loss of books. Meanwhile, the managerial inefficiency of current mobile bookcrossing systems becomes another obstacle for advancing the book circulation. To overcome these problems, we propose to leverage the promising blockchain technology with the merits of its immutability and cryptographic smart contract. In this paper, we present BookChain, a traceable and efficient blockchain-based innercampus book sharing system. BookChain stores the complete sharing data of an interested book permanently on blockchain, such that every reader can trace the borrowing history, which reduces the potential for loss of book. BookChain also introduces the use of smart contract to automate the circulation of books with minimal human intervention, resulting in the improvement of efficiency. The experimental results show the effectiveness and low-cost of the proposed system under high concurrent users.

Non-uniform memory access (NUMA) architectures feature asymmetrical memory access latencies on different CPU nodes. Hybrid memory systems composed of non-volatile memory (NVM) and DRAM further diversify memory access latencies due to the relatively large performance gap between NVM and DRAM. Traditional NUMA memory management policies fail to manage hybrid memories effectively and may even hurt application performance. In this paper, we present HiNUMA, a new NUMA abstraction for memory allocation and migration in hybrid memory systems. HiNUMA advocates NUMA topologyaware hybrid memory allocation policies for the initial data placement. HiNUMA also proposes a new NUMA balancing mechanism called HANB for memory migration at runtime. HANB considers both data access frequency and memory bandwidth utilization to reduce the cost of memory accesses in hybrid memory systems. We evaluate the performance of HiNUMA with several typical workloads. Experimental results show that HiNUMA can effectively utilize hybrid memories, and deliver much higher application performance than conventional NUMA memory management policies and other state-of-the-art work.

Cloud computing provides utility-based and scalable services to end-users. In the past decade, the demands for resource management in cloud computing have increased substantially which lead to certain challenges such as optimal resource utilization, power consumption, and service level agreement violations. Workload performance prediction serves as an assistance to address these issues. In this paper, we propose a prediction model based on clustered Case-Based Reasoning (CBR). The proposed model determines the performance metrics for workload prior to the co-operation of autonomic computing characteristics. Thus, CBR provides optimal scheduling of resources and workload monitoring for cloud data centers. In order to validate the proposed CBR-based prediction model, we perform a series of experiments and evaluate the effectiveness in terms of precision, recall, f-measure, and mean square error rate. We generate the cases for CBR using traces from the Google cluster data center. Moreover, we also validate our proposed prediction model against Support Vector Machine (SVM) prediction scheme. Experimental results show that the proposed CBR outperforms the SVM-based approach and yields 10% improvement in terms of precision.
