Recently a promising research direction of statistical learning has been advocated, i.e., the optimal margin distribution learning, with the central idea of optimizing the margin distribution. As the most representative approach of this new learning paradigm, the optimal margin distribution machine (ODM) considers maximizing the margin mean and minimizing the margin variance simultaneously. The standard ODM exploits the ℓ_2-norm penalty, which gives rise to a dense decision boundary. However, in some situations, the model with parsimonious representation is more preferred, due to the redundant noisy features or limited computing resources. In this paper, we propose the sparse optimal margin distribution machine (Sparse ODM), which aims to achieve better generalization performance with moderate model size. For optimization, we extends an efficient coordinate descent method to solve the final problem since the variables are decoupled. In each iteration, we propose a modified Newton method to solve the one-variable sub-problem. Experimental results on both synthetic and real data sets show the superiority of the proposed method.

Graph mining is becoming increasingly important due to the ever-increasing demands on analyzing complex structures in graphs. Existing graph accelerators typically hold most of the randomly-accessed data in an on-chip memory to avoid off-chip communications. However, graph mining exhibits substantial random accesses from not only vertex dimension but also edge dimension (with the latter being excessively more complex than the former), leading to significant degradations in terms of both performance and energy *** observe that the most random memory requests arising in graph mining come from accessing a small fraction of valuable (vertex and edge) data when handling real-world graphs. To exploit this extension locality with maximum parallelism, we architect GRAMER, the first graph mining accelerator. GRAMER contains a specialized memory hierarchy, where the valuable data (precisely identified through a cost-efficient heuristic) is permanently resident in a high-priority memory while others are maintained in a cache-like memory under a lightweight replacement policy. The specific pipelined processing units are carefully designed to maximize computational parallelism. GRAMER is also equipped with a work-stealing mechanism to reduce load imbalance. We have implemented GRAMER on a Xilinx Alveo U250 accelerator card. Compared with two state-of-the-art CPU-based graph mining systems, Fractal and RStream, running on a 14-core Intel E5-2680 v4 processor, GRAMER achieves not only considerable speedups (1.11 × ~ 129.95 ) but also significant energy savings (5.79 × ~ 678.34×)

Nowadays, web servers often face the threat of distributed denial of service attacks and their intrusion prevention systems cannot detect those attacks effectively. Many existing intrusion prevention systems detect attacks by the state of per-flow and current processing speed cannot fulfill the requirements of real-time detection due to the high speed traffic. In this paper, we propose a powerful system TreeSketchShield which can improve sketch data structure and detect attacks quickly. First, we discuss a novel structure TreeSketch to obtain statistics of network flow, which utilizes the stepped structure of binary tree to map the distribution and reduces the complexity of the statistic calculation. Second, we present a two-level detection scheme that could make a compromise between the detection speed and detection accuracy. Experimental results show that our method can process more than 100,000 records per second. The false alarm rate can achieve 2% to 25% performance improvement. © 2019, IFIP International Federation for Information Processing.

Graph is one of the most important data structures to model social networks and becomes popular to find interesting relationships between individuals. Since graphs may contain sensitive information, data curators usually need to anonymize the graph before publication to prevent individual re-identification, which thus leads to plenty of anonymized graphs for data sharing and exploration. However, the new structures and properties of anonymized graphs make the traditional graph indexing method inefficient or even invalid for query processing. To address the subgraph query problem over anonymized graph database, in this paper, we first introduce basic concepts about anonymized graphs and subgraph queries, then propose an index structure named Closure+-tree to process the subgraph query efficiently. In particular, graphs were organized hierarchically that each node is an union of its child nodes under some specified mapping functions. During the processing of subgraph queries, the whole graph descendants will be pruned if their union does not contain the query graph. To evaluate the performance of our proposed Closure+-tree, extensive experiments are performed on both real and synthetic graph data sets. The experimental results revealed that our index structure can prune up to 80% unqualified graphs with variable size of queries. Furthermore, the size of our index structure is only around a quarter of the entire anonymized graph data set, which indicates good scalability over large data sets. © 2018 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Now, it is popular for people to share their feelings, activities tagged with geography and temporal information in Online Social Networks (OSNs). The spatial and temporal interactions occurred in OSNs contain a wealth of information to indicate friendship between persons. Existing researches generally focused on single dimension: spatial or temporal dimension. The simplified model only works in limited scenarios. Here, we aim to understand the probability of friendship and the place and time of interactions. First, spatial similarity of interactions is defined as a vector of places where persons checked in. Second, we employ exponential functions to characterize the change of strength of interactions as time goes on. Finally, a unified probability model to predict friendship between two persons is given. The model contains two sub-models based on spatial similarity and temporal similarity respectively. The experimental results on four data sets including spatial data sets (Gowalla and Weeplaces) and temporal data sets (Higgs Twitter Data set, High school Call Data set) show that our model works as expected. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2019.

To avoid data loss, data centers adopt disk failure prediction (DFP) technology to raise warnings ahead of actual disk failures, and process the warnings in the order they are raised, i.e., a first-in-first-out (FIFO) warning order. The FIFO-guided warning order can process warnings timely when disk failures are rare in data centers. With the growing scale of data centers, the increasing number of disk failures leads to a complex situation that multiple warnings are raised simultaneously, where the FIFO-guided warning order neither processes warnings timely, nor manages warnings properly due to lack of the priority of warnings. Thus, a real-time and finer-grained priority guidance for warning order management is an urgent need. To this end, we turn our attention to the failures since each warning corresponds to a fail event. The key insight is that the interdependence of failures, i.e., the order failure occurred, indicates the order of warning processing. With an accurate failure order, data centers can decrease the probability of data loss and the downtime of latency-sensitive applications by processing urgent warnings in advance. In this paper, we predict the failure order with a LambdaMART model, which is a state-of-the-art ranking algorithm in information retrieval. To avoid overly concerning on the correctness of high-rank warnings in information retrieval, we design a symmetric metric to evaluate the prediction evaluation of failure order. Experiment on a public dataset, provided by the Backblaze company, shows that our model outperforms the FIFO order and the order from previous DFP models. © 2019 IEEE.

In traditional database systems, data anonymization has been extensively studied, it provides an effective solution for data privacy preservation, and multidimensional anonymization scheme among them is widely used. However, without delicate parameter settings, these technologies may cause uncontrollable information loss and decrease the accuracy of data analytic tasks. Furthermore, crowdsourcing data is usually huge in amount and must be distributed stored in clouds, which makes the conventional data anonymization technologies not applicable. In this paper, we propose a framework that uses MapReduce to anonymize large-scale data before disseminating them to human workers. In order to guarantee the number and distribution of data records to be similar in all nodes, our framework first redistributes the original data to all participating nodes. Then a heuristic two-phase anonymization schema, which can be seamlessly integrated into the framework, is proposed. Experimental results show that with the same objective of privacy, our approach is scalable for large-scale data and can improve the average accuracy of human worker's analytic tasks. © 2019 IEEE.

The brain tumor segmentation task aims to classify tissue into the whole tumor (WT), tumor core (TC) and enhancing tumor (ET) classes using multimodel MRI images. Quantitative analysis of brain tumors is critical for clinical decision making. While manual segmentation is tedious, time-consuming, and subjective, this task is at the same time very challenging to automatic segmentation methods. Thanks to the powerful learning ability, convolutional neural networks (CNNs), mainly fully convolutional networks, have shown promising brain tumor segmentation. This paper further boosts the performance of brain tumor segmentation by proposing hyperdense inception 3D UNet (HI-Net), which captures multi-scale information by stacking factorization of 3D weighted convolutional layers in the residual inception block. We use hyper dense connections among factorized convolutional layers to extract more contexual information, with the help of features reusability. We use a dice loss function to cope with class imbalances. We validate the proposed architecture on the multi-modal brain tumor segmentation challenges (BRATS) 2020 testing dataset. Preliminary results on the BRATS 2020 testing set show that achieved by our proposed approach, the dice (DSC) scores of ET, WT, and TC are 0.79457, 0.87494, and 0.83712, respectively. © 2020, CC BY.

HomDroid: Detecting android covert malware by social-network homophily analysis

Android has become the most popular mobile operating system. Correspondingly, an increasing number of Android malware has been developed and spread to steal users' private information. There exists one type of malware whose benign behaviors are developed to camouflage malicious behaviors. The malicious component occupies a small part of the entire code of the application (app for short), and the malicious part is strongly coupled with the benign part. In this case, the malware may cause false negatives when malware detectors extract features from the entire apps to conduct classification because the malicious features of these apps may be hidden among benign features. Moreover, some previous work aims to divide the entire app into several parts to discover the malicious part. However, the premise of these methods to commence app partition is that the connections between the normal part and the malicious part are weak (e.g., repackaged malware). In this paper, we call this type of malware as Android covert malware and generate the first dataset of covert malware. To detect covert malware samples, we first conduct static analysis to extract the function call graphs. Through the deep analysis on call graphs, we observe that although the correlations between the normal part and the malicious part in these graphs are high, the degree of these correlations has a unique range of distribution. Based on the observation, we design a novel system, HomDroid, to detect covert malware by analyzing the homophily of call graphs. We identify the ideal threshold of correlation to distinguish the normal part and the malicious part based on the evaluation results on a dataset of 4,840 benign apps and 3,385 covert malicious apps. According to our evaluation results, HomDroid is capable of detecting 96.8% of covert malware while the False Negative Rates of another four stateof- the-art systems (i.e., PerDroid, Drebin, MaMaDroid, and IntDroid) are 30.7%, 16.3%, 15.2%, and 10.4%, respectiv

Serverless computing, also known as “Function as a Service (FaaS)”, is emerging as an event-driven paradigm of cloud computing. In the FaaS model, applications are programmed in the form of functions that are executed and managed separately. Functions are triggered by cloud users and are provisioned dynamically through containers or virtual machines (VMs). The startup delays of containers or VMs usually lead to rather high latency of response to cloud users. Moreover, the communication between different functions generally relies on virtual net devices or shared memory, and may cause extremely high performance overhead. In this paper, we propose Unikernel-as-a-Function (UaaF), a much more lightweight approach to serverless computing. Applications are abstracted as a combination of different functions, and each function are built as an unikernel in which the function is linked with a specified minimum-sized library operating system (LibOS). UaaF offers extremely low startup latency to execute functions, and an efficient communication model to speed up inter-functions interactions. We exploit an new hardware technique (namely VMFUNC) to invoke functions in other unikernels seamlessly (mostly like inter-process communications), without suffering performance penalty of VM Exits. We implement our proof-of-concept prototype based on KVM and deploy UaaF in three unikernels (MirageOS, IncludeOS, and Solo5). Experimental results show that U aaF can significantly reduce the startup latency and memory usage of serverless cloud applications. Moreover, the VMFUNC-based communication model can also significantly improve the performance of function invocations between different unikernels.
