In grid and cloud computing infrastructures, the integrity of a computing platform is a critical security requirement in order to provide secure and honest computing environments to service providers and resource consumers. However, due to the fact that software components running on a single platform are usually provided and maintained by different authorities which are potentially untrusted to each other, the problem to monitor and protect runtime system integrity become very challenging and has not been well addressed yet. In this paper, we present a virtualization based dynamic integrity protection method which ensures that only appropriate authorities can control over their components without interfering with other component providers or authorities. In our solution, integrity requirements defined by the authorities of upper components (e.g., service middleware and applications) are respected by preventing the underlying components (e.g., operating system) from exposing their sensitive data, which can be caused by update of the underlying components or other malicious actions. We implement our solution on Xen-based platform, and our evaluation results show that the solution is effective for integrity protection with acceptable performance overhead.

Warcraft III is one of the most popular Multiplayer Online Game (MOG) games, where users are designed to interact with support of a dedicated server. PKTown is a P2P-based third-party middleware developed to replace the dedicated servers. This paper presents the scalability and robustness of PKTown 2.0 architecture. The evaluation demonstrates the efficiency of the architecture.

The first step towards the information lifecycle management is to differentiate information by values. This paper presents an evaluation model for information value. The idea of the model is from commodity value discipline in economic area. The output of information value evaluation model is determined by information itself which is like commodity price is determined by use-value in economic area. The output of the model is changed around the real information value and controlled by the relationship between information supply and demand. The output of the model is determined by factors from three aspects that are information itself, information supply, and information demand. When applying the model into traditional information management approaches, such as replication, data migration, and backup, those mechanisms control the output of the model through adjusting the ability of information supply.

ChestBox: Enabling Fast State Sharing for Stateful Serverless computing with State Functions

This paper presents ChestBox, a novel approach that utilizes state functions to facilitate low-latency state sharing for stateful serverless computing. When an application function needs to share a state, the state function creates a memory space with Linux's shared memory object to store the state. Other application functions can then read the state directly from the shared memory. ChestBox enables fast state sharing that avoids excessive memory overhead without compromising on-demand resource allocation compared to existing solutions. This effectively reduces the energy consumption of serverless computing and promotes sustainable computing. The implementation of ChestBox on Apache OpenWhisk unearths two major implementation challenges, which we address with respective optimization techniques, i.e., state function channel and state swapping. The evaluation of ChestBox with four real-world applications shows that compared with the state-of-The-Art approach, it can reduce state-sharing latency by up to 99.71%, while reducing execution costs by 24.59% and storage costs by 99.76%. © 2016 IEEE.

Recently, the consideration of social characteristics present a new angle of view in the design of data routing and dissemination in delay tolerant networks. Many social network studies have been undertaken using a ego network because it has the benefit of simplicity in data collection and gives statistically significant features about the entire network in many cases. In this paper, we newly define the expanded ego network by comprising the ego's 2-hop neighbor nodes as well as the ego's 1-hop ones. In delay tolerant networks, the expended ego network can be easily self-configured at a node and it can contain more network information than the ego network. Therefore, it is expected that the effectiveness of the expanded ego network will be higher than the one of the ego network in terms of data routing and dissemination. We examine that the relationship among the expanded ego betweenness, the ego betweenness, and the betweenness of the entire network for a node. By a simulation study, we show that the expanded ego betweenness is highly correlated with the betweenness of the entire network when the network is dense and its nodes are highly inter-related. © 2013 Springer science+Business Media.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Third International DMTF Academic Alliance Workshop on Systems and Virtualization Management: Standards and the Cloud (SVM 2009) held in Wuhan, China, during September 22-23, 2009. The SVM 2009 proceedings are intended for use by students of systems and vir- alization management. The reader is presumed to have a basic knowledge of systems management technologies and standards at the level provided, for example, by the Common Information Model (CIM) standard for modeling management resources. The student of systems management will find here material that could be included in an advanced study program. These proceedings should furthermore allow students to acquire an appreciation of the breadth and variety of systems and virtualization m- agement research. The proceedings also illuminate related standards and research issues, answering questions such as: what are the implications of virtualization for distributed systems management, which advances in information models and protocols aid in managing virtualization, what new problems will we incur when managing virtualized systems and services, and how might management itself benefit from virtualization? Topics related to managing distributed systems, virtualization of distributed - sources/services and work in management standardization are also highlighted. There were 28 regular paper submissions. These went through an active review process, with each submission reviewed by at least three members of the Program Committee. We also sought external reviews from experts in certain areas. All these inputs were used by the Program Committee in selecting a final program with 12 regular papers.

It has been recognized that cellular network interfaces are not energy efficient because of tail energy after each transmission. Although many research efforts have been made to reduce tail energy, they ignore the dynamic of link quality caused by user mobility or network congestion, which would lead to limited improvement without quality-of-experience guarantee. In this paper, we study to minimize energy consumption of the cellular network interface with a sequence of download/upload requests. Given accurate estimation of achievable link rate, we design a dynamic-programming (DP) based algorithm to obtain the optimal solution. Without the knowledge of dynamic link quality and future requests, an online algorithm is proposed to approximate the optimal solution. Finally, we conduct extensive simulations using real traces to evaluate the performance of our proposals, and the results show that 29% energy can be saved by using our algorithm under typical network settings.

To defend the IP spoofing and differentiate IP address in the network intrusion detection system and DDoS defense system, we give a novel approach Recursion Nearness to characterize the IP address features, which is also helpful to the other security applications, such as firewall log analysis, traffics filter rule management, intrusion investigation and IP trace back. We characterize the IP address with some fields, such as TTL, MAC, TCP/IP stack implementation fingerprinting and IP geographic location mapping. Major implementation approaches to the system are discussed and given. Experiment results of our system show that this method can characterize IP features more exact and efficiently.

A multicast based bandwidth saving approach for wireless live streaming system

P2P based live streaming applications are growing up rapidly. However, when extending them to WLANs, the bandwidth bottleneck and the high rate of packet loss are usually the major stumbling blocks. To overcome this issue, a new wireless multicast agent mechanism (WiMA) based on the IP multicast scheme for buffer management and scheduling is proposed. First of all, a wireless agent selection method is presented to choose an appropriate agent for WiMA. Then this agent gains media data by interacting with wired neighbor peers as a common P2P node, and transmits these data to other wireless peers in the WLAN by means of multicast pushing and multicast patching. A normal wireless peer requests data according to the strategy of "emergent ones first". Experimental results show that the approach proposed can significantly save bandwidth in WLANs with acceptable start delay and satisfied playing continuity.

Peers in multiple P2P applications execute overlapped operations with different implementation, like neighbour management, resource publish/lookup, delay investigation, which leads to poor interoperability and unnecessary network load. Peers contribute their resources only when they stay in same application. We propose a P2P middleware, called Ripple, to accomplish common functions in a layered architecture. Ripple manages all peers running various applications in a uniform substrate overlay network. The substrate overlay is designed with a hybrid topology. This hybrid topology does not aim at only a particular type of applications, but also enables the flexibility for various applications. Our work is an attempt to address common needs of P2P applications, which may simplify the development and improve the performance of P2P networks, as well as mitigate the sampling stress to physical networks.
