Contrastive Learning for Robust Android Malware Familial Classification

Due to its open-source nature, Android operating system has been the main target of attackers to exploit. Malware creators always perform different code obfuscations on their apps to hide malicious activities. Features extracted from these obfuscated samples through program analysis contain many useless and disguised features, which leads to many false negatives. To address the issue, in this paper, we demonstrate that obfuscation-resilient malware family analysis can be achieved through contrastive learning. The key insight behind our analysis is that contrastive learning can be used to reduce the difference introduced by obfuscation while amplifying the difference between malware and other types of malware. Based on the proposed analysis, we design a system that can achieve robust and interpretable classification of Android malware. To achieve robust classification, we perform contrastive learning on malware samples to learn an encoder that can automatically extract robust features from malware samples. To achieve interpretable classification, we transform the function call graph of a sample into an image by centrality analysis. Then the corresponding heatmaps can be obtained by visualization techniques. These heatmaps can help users understand why the malware is classified as this family. We implement IFDroid and perform extensive evaluations on two datasets. Experimental results show that IFDroid is superior to state-of-the-art Android malware familial classification systems. Federated learning (FL) enables massive clients to collaboratively train a global model by aggregating their local updates without disclosing raw data. Communication has become one of the main bottlenecks that prolongs the training process, especially under large model variances due to skewed data distributions. Existing efforts mainly focus on either single momentum-based gradient descent, or random client selection for potential variance reduction, yet both often lead to poor model accuracy and system efficiency. In this paper, we propose FedMoS, a communication-efficient FL framework with coupled double momentum-based update and adaptive client selection, to jointly mitigate the intrinsic variance. Specifically, FedMoS maintains customized momentum buffers on both server and client sides, which track global and local update directions to alleviate the model discrepancy. Taking momentum results as input, we design an adaptive selection scheme to provide a proper client representation during FL aggregation. By optimally calibrating clients’ selection probabilities, we can effectively reduce the sampling variance, while ensuring unbiased aggregation. Through a rigid analysis, we show that FedMoS can attain the theoretically optimal ${{\mathcal{O}}}\left({{T^{ - 2/3}}}\right)$ convergence rate. Extensive experiments using real-world datasets further validate the superiority of FedMoS, with 58%-87% communication reduction for achieving the same target performance compared to state-of-the-art techniques.

Nowadays, high-level synthesis (HLS) has gained prominence for FPGA-based architecture prototyping, enhancing productivity significantly. Despite this advancement, HLS tools are impeded by a critical drawback: they lack support for dynamic memory management (DMM), leading to static mem-ory allocation and suboptimal use of memory resources. In response, numerous efforts have been made to develop DMM solutions compatible with HLS. However, our analysis indicates that existing solutions fail to concurrently meet the desired trifecta of scalability (efficient management of memory of any size), efficiency (minimal latency in memory (de-)allocation), and robustness (low allocation failure rates). This limitation hampers their applicability in real-world scenarios. In this paper, we introduce GraDMM, a “three-birds-one- stone” solution that comprehensively enhances the scalability, efficiency, and robustness of DMM. The key insight is to formulate memory (de-)allocation as graph analytics and lever-age sophisticated FPGA-based graph processing techniques. To achieve scalability, GraDMM specializes a simplified pipeline that significantly suppresses resource utilization expansion caused by managed memory scaling. This is crucial for managing arbitrarily sized memory on resource-limited FPGA platforms. For efficiency, GraDMM implements a data-centric concurrent traversal scheme and a shortcut-assisted fast traversal policy to accelerate (de-)allocation-guided graph traversal, reducing mem-ory (de-)allocation latency. To enhance robustness, GraDMM incorporates an adaptive memory defragmenter that defragments managed memory to minimize fragmentation-induced allocation failures. In the medical realm, the pivotal role of pathological Whole Slide Images (WSIs) in detecting cancer, tracking disease progression, and evaluating treatment efficacy is indisputable. Nevertheless, the identification and quantification of lesion areas in these gigapixel WSIs present a significant challenge due to their substantial size and the intricate details of lesions. To address these issues, we developed a novel multi-resolution and multi-scale cross fusion network (M 2 CF-Net), adept at managing large-scale pathological WSIs and capturing both fine details and context. Our model particularly focuses on segmenting local lymphocyte infiltration lesions in pathological WSIs of patients diagnosed with primary Sjogren's syndrome. By employing a patch-based training approach and combining interconnected elements via a multi-scale fusion technique, we enhance our model's capacity to detect and analyze structures and features in minor salivary gland section WSIs. Extensive experiments and ablation studies conducted on real-world clinical datasets affirm our model's superior accuracy in identifying lymphocyte-infiltrated regions over state-of-the-art models, with a performance improvement of up to 4.32% in terms of the Dice Similarity Coefficient.

Many graph processing systems have been recently developed for many-core processors. However, for iterative graph processing, due to the dependencies between vertices' states, the propagations of new states of vertices are inherently conducted along graph paths sequentially and are also dependent on each other. Despite the years' research effort, existing solutions still severely underutilize many-core processors to quickly propagate the new states of vertices, suffering from slow convergence speed. In this paper, we propose a dependency-driven programmable accelerator, DepGraph, which couples with the core architecture of the many-core processor and can fundamentally alleviate the challenge of dependencies for faster state propagation. Specifically, we propose an effective dependency-driven asynchronous execution approach into novel microarchitecture designs for faster state propagations. DepGraph prefetches the vertices for the core on-the-fly along the dependency chains between their states and the active vertices' new states, aiming to effectively accelerate the propagations of the active vertices' new states and also ensure better data locality. Through transforming the dependency chains along the frequently-used paths into direct ones at runtime and maintaining these calculated direct dependencies as a set of fast shortcuts, called hub index, DepGraph further accelerates most state propagations. Also, many propagations do not need to wait for the completion of other propagations, which enables more propagations to be effectively conducted along the paths with higher degree of parallelism. The experimental results show that for iterative graph processing on a simulated 64-core processor, a cutting-edge software graph processing system can achieve 5.0-22.7 times speedup after integrating with our DepGraph while incurring only 0.6% area cost. Temporal knowledge graph (TKG) reasoning has attracted significant attention. Recent approaches for modeling historical information have led to great advances. However, the problems of time variability and unseen entities have become two major obstacles preventing further development. The time variability problem means that different historical timestamps play different roles in the inference process. Furthermore, in the context of time variability, the unseen entity problem means that a query cannot obtain a predicted entity that is unseen in the scale-varying history rather than in a fixed set, thus turning from static to dynamic. In this paper, we propose a novel method named DHU-NET for addressing the time variability challenge and the dynamic unseen entity challenge derived from it. With regard to the former concern, we propose a time-distributed representation learning method based on a graph convolutional network(GCN) and a self-attention mechanism, which learns the distributed representations of facts at different historical timestamps and comprehensively pays different levels of attention to the different timestamps. With regard to the latter issue, we extract the unseen entities from a global static KG based on a copy mechanism and bring them into consideration during the final prediction step. Experiments on six benchmark datasets demonstrate the substantial improvements achieved by DHUNET in terms of multiple evaluation metrics. A survey on graph processing accelerators: Challenges and opportunities

Graph is a well known data structure to represent the associated relationships in a variety of applications, e.g., data science and machine learning. Despite a wealth of existing efforts on developing graph processing systems for improving the performance and/or energy efficiency on traditional architectures, dedicated hardware solutions, also referred to as graph processing accelerators, are essential and emerging to provide the benefits significantly beyond those pure software solutions can offer. In this paper, we conduct a systematical survey regarding the design and implementation of graph processing accelerator. Specifically, we review the relevant techniques in three core components toward a graph processing accelerator: preprocessing, parallel graph computation and runtime scheduling. We also examine the benchmarks and results in existing studies for evaluating a graph processing accelerator. Interestingly, we find that there is not an absolute winner for all three aspects in graph acceleration due to the diverse characteristics of graph processing and complexity of hardware configurations. Temporal knowledge graph (TKG) extrapolation aims to predict future unknown events (facts) based on historical information, and has attracted considerable attention due to its great practical significance. Accurate representations (embeddings) of entities and relations form the basis of TKG extrapolation. Recent work has been devoted to improving the rationality of entity representations. However, on the one hand, ignoring relation modeling results in incomplete relation representations; therefore, some approaches aggregate only immediately adjacent entities of relations, but this can lead to the "message islands" problem of relation modeling. On the other hand, ignoring the association constraints between relations and entities can make the embeddings of both relations and entities prone to overfitting. To address the abovementioned challenges, we propose an advanced method, namely, RETIA. For the former issue, we generate twin hyperrelation subgraphs for each historical subgraph and then aggregate both the adjacent entities and relations in the hyperrelation subgraphs through a graph convolutional network (GCN). About the latter concern, we propose a twin-interact module (TIM), which provides communication channels for relation aggregation and entity aggregation during the evolution of the historical sequence. Experiments conducted on five public datasets show that RETIA has made great improvements across several evaluation metrics. Our released code is available at https://***/CGCL-codes/RETIA.

Key distribution strategy of security multicast in grid

In grid, it is an important strategy that using multicast to realize the large-scale information resource sharing. However, it is very difficult to ensure the security of multicast. In this paper, based on the basic principles of the centralized key distributed strategy and the distributed key distribution strategy, according to the multicast mechanism in grid, considering the dynamic factors of multicast members, we present the member hierarchy method for key distribution, the member discovery protocol, the clustering protocol and the key distribution strategy, thus constituting the key distribution strategy of security multicast in grid. In order to validate the feasibility and the availability of this strategy, a simulation experiment is done. The results show that it is feasible and efficient to ensure the security multicast in grid.

No Free Lunch Theorem for Privacy-Preserving LLM Inference

Individuals and businesses have been significantly benefited by Large Language Models (LLMs) including PaLM, Gemini and ChatGPT in various ways. For example, LLMs enhance productivity, reduce costs, and enable us to focus on more valuable tasks. Furthermore, LLMs possess the capacity to sift through extensive datasets, uncover underlying patterns, and furnish critical insights that propel the frontiers of technology and science. However, LLMs also pose privacy concerns. Users’ interactions with LLMs may expose their sensitive personal or company information. A lack of robust privacy safeguards and legal frameworks could permit the unwarranted intrusion or improper handling of individual data, thereby risking infringements of privacy and the theft of personal identities. To ensure privacy, it is essential to minimize the dependency between shared prompts and private information. Various randomization approaches have been proposed to protect prompts’ privacy, but they may incur utility loss compared to unprotected LLMs prompting. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate the balance between the risk of privacy leakage and loss of utility when conducting effective protection mechanisms. The current study develops a framework for inferring privacy-protected Large Language Models (LLMs) and lays down a solid theoretical basis for examining the interplay between privacy preservation and utility.
