The ability for cloud data centres and edge data centres to collaborate unleashes the potential of the edge-cloud system. However, its sophistication causes unexpected issues in request scheduling, such as Insufficient intelligence, complicated hierarchy and limited cooperation. Traditional resource optimization methods for the edge-cloud system struggle to accommodate such intricate situations. In this paper, inspired by the behaviors and regulations in human society, we propose a socialized learning-based scheduling approach for the edge-cloud system, namely SocialEdge. In order to adapt to time-varying requests and dynamic service prevalence, we propose a learning-based approach, multi-agent advantage actor-critic (MAA2C) and graph convolutional networks-based MAA2C for two phases, respectively, which can improve individual intelligence to achieve optimal dispatch and orchestration decisions. Then, to make use of hierarchy correlation, we develop the socialized refining inter the layers, where inference results from one layer guide the training process of the other layer so that optimization-critical knowledge can be abstracted. Besides, we apply socialized cooperation to each layer, where federated averaging with MAA2C is implemented to ensure cooperation over private data for achieving optimal global solutions. Experimental evaluations on a proof-of-concept testbed along with two real traces demonstrate that baselines have 105% more delay than SocialEdge while being 76.6% less time efficiency and 21.6% less throughput.

Humans have the ability to segregate different incoming sounds and perform selective attention to a particular sound using the brain's auditory attention mechanism. Various psycho-acoustic studies suggest that acoustic features extracted by both brain hemispheres are integrated through interhemispheric integration. During selective auditory attention, different responses are then present in the left and right sides of the brain. Recently, studies also suggest that attention induces a spatially specific alpha power increase and decrease in respective hemispheres ipsilateral and contralateral to the locus of attended speech. This finding motivates us to design XAnet, a neuroscience-inspired network for Auditory Attention Decoding (AAD). In XAnet, neural activity measured by ElectroEncephalography (EEG) is first divided into left and right-side EEG channel groups and then integrated as cross-attention to capture differentiated left and right-side responses of the brain. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first approach in AAD that divides and integrates the left and right channel groups to capture brain responses. Our experimental results indicate that XAnet outper-forms other competitive models. It achieves (90.6%, 82.1%, and 75.1%) accuracy for 1-second decision window and outperformed the benchmark CNN (84.1%, 75.1%, and 62.0%) on the KUL dataset for 64, 10, and 4 channels, respectively.

Code Pre-trained Models (CodePTMs) based vulnerability detection have achieved promising results over recent years. However, these models struggle to generalize as they typically learn superficial mapping from source code to labels instead of understanding the root causes of code vulnerabilities, resulting in poor performance in real-world scenarios beyond the training instances. To tackle this challenge, we introduce VulLLM, a novel framework that integrates multi-task learning with Large Language Models (LLMs) to effectively mine deep-seated vulnerability features. Specifically, we construct two auxiliary tasks beyond the vulnerability detection task. First, we utilize the vulnerability patches to construct a vulnerability localization task. Second, based on the vulnerability features extracted from patches, we leverage GPT-4 to construct a vulnerability interpretation task. VulLLM innovatively augments vulnerability classification by leveraging generative LLMs to understand complex vulnerability patterns, thus compelling the model to capture the root causes of vulnerabilities rather than overfitting to spurious features of a single task. The experiments conducted on six large datasets demonstrate that VulLLM surpasses seven state-of-the-art models in terms of effectiveness, generalization, and robustness. © 2024, CC BY.

In the field of finance, data has the characteristics of temporal multi-frequency and heterogeneous high dimension, and the traditional knowledge graph is not suitable to express the temporal relation of financial data, so the financial temporal knowledge graph has become a research hotspot recently. There are a large number of temporal edges in the financial temporal knowledge graph. The use of general graph database management system to store financial knowledge graph data has problems such as large storage scale and slow update speed, and it cannot realize the traceability of financial data, so it cannot meet the needs of the financial field. In order to solve these problems, HyperBit, a storage system for efficient storage and management of financial data, is designed and implemented. Firstly, a temporal quad storage structure is proposed. Secondly, the Log Structured Cumulative Update (LSCU) is proposed to update financial temporal data efficiently. The update log module is designed in the system. When there is data to update, it is not directly updated in the data storage of the system, but recorded in the update log, and the system updates the content of the update log cumulatively. The system manages update logs by partition and chunk, which makes the log storage compact and independent. Besides, it is convenient for parallel processing and it improves the data update speed. Thirdly, a Bidirectional Backtracking by Final and Optimal Root (BBFOR) method is proposed to meet the requirements of efficient traceability of financial data. Unlike traditional version tracing method, BBFOR adopt both the snapshot and incremental methods which balance the space and time cost of version switching, and BBROF consider the version of the access frequency characteristic and set up the final root and the optimal root. Aquaculture is a significant component of Malaysia's fishery sector and makes a substantial contribution to the country's economy. It is the source of income and employment for the nation. Tilapia fish is one of the main species cultured in the aquaculture industry, as eggs produced by this fish are considered very valuable both in terms of quantity and quality. A standard egg selection procedure to calculate the fish egg properly has not yet been implemented. The process of fish egg selection plays a vital role in determining the accurate count of fish eggs. This study focuses on developing an automated counting system for tilapia fish eggs using an image processing technique concentrating on the watershed algorithm. This algorithm enables the image of the fish eggs to be clustered in shaded colors, thus enabling the total number of fish eggs to be automatically counted. The results show that the automated counting system for tilapia fish eggs works successfully as the accuracy obtained was above 90%. It is believed that an automated counting system can help fish breeders to perform fish egg counting automatically and more effectively and efficiently.

Robin: A Novel Method to Produce Robust Interpreters for Deep Learning-Based Code Classifiers

Deep learning has been widely used in source code classification tasks, such as code classification according to their functionalities, code authorship attribution, and vulnerability detection. Unfortunately, the black-box nature of deep learning makes it hard to interpret and understand why a classifier (i.e., classification model) makes a particular prediction on a given example. This lack of interpretability (or explainability) might have hindered their adoption by practitioners because it is not clear when they should or should not trust a classifier's prediction. The lack of interpretability has motivated a number of studies in recent years. However, existing methods are neither robust nor able to cope with out-of-distribution examples. In this paper, we propose a novel method to produce Robust interpreters for a given deep learning-based code classifier;the method is dubbed Robin. The key idea behind Robin is a novel hybrid structure combining an interpreter and two approximators, while leveraging the ideas of adversarial training and data augmentation. Experimental results show that on average the interpreter produced by Robin achieves a 6.11% higher fidelity (evaluated on the classifier), 67.22% higher fidelity (evaluated on the approximator), and 15.87x higher robustness than that of the three existing interpreters we evaluated. Moreover, the interpreter is 47.31% less affected by out-of-distribution examples than that of LEMNA. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The dilemma between plasticity and stability arises as a common challenge for incremental learning. In contrast, the human memory system is able to remedy this dilemma owing to its multilevel memory structure, which motivates us to propose a Bilevel Memory system with Knowledge Projection (BMKP) for incremental learning. BMKP decouples the functions of learning and remembering via a bilevel-memory design: a working memory responsible for adaptively model learning, to ensure plasticity; a long-term memory in charge of enduringly storing the knowledge incorporated within the learned model, to guarantee stability. However, an emerging issue is how to extract the learned knowledge from the working memory and assimilate it into the long-term memory. To approach this issue, we reveal that the parameters learned by the working memory are actually residing in a redundant high-dimensional space, and the knowledge incorporated in the model can have a quite compact representation under a group of pattern basis shared by all incremental learning tasks. Therefore, we propose a knowledge projection process to adaptively maintain the shared basis, with which the loosely organized model knowledge of working memory is projected into the compact representation to be remembered in the long-term memory. We evaluate BMKP on CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and Tiny-ImageNet. Satellite data has the potential to inspire a seismic shift for machine learning—one in which we rethink existing practices designed for traditional data modalities. As machine learning for satellite data (SatML) gains traction for its real-world impact, our field is at a crossroads. We can either continue applying ill-suited approaches, or we can initiate a new research agenda that centers around the unique characteristics and challenges of satellite data. This position paper argues that satellite data constitutes a distinct modality for machine learning research and that we must recognize it as such to advance the quality and impact of SatML research across theory, methods, and deployment. We outline critical discussion questions and actionable suggestions to transform SatML from merely an intriguing application area to a dedicated research discipline that helps move the needle on big challenges for machine learning and society. A Four-Pronged Defense Against Byzantine Attacks in Federated Learning

Federated learning (FL) is a nascent distributed learning paradigm to train a shared global model without violating users' privacy. FL has been shown to be vulnerable to various Byzantine attacks, where malicious participants could independently or collusively upload well-crafted updates to deteriorate the performance of the global model. However, existing defenses could only mitigate part of Byzantine attacks, without providing an all-sided shield for FL. It is difficult to simply combine them as they rely on totally contradictory assumptions. In this paper, we propose FPD, a four-pronged defense against both non-colluding and colluding Byzantine attacks. Our main idea is to utilize absolute similarity to filter updates rather than relative similarity used in existingI works. To this end, we first propose a reliable client selection strategy to prevent the majority of threats in the bud. Then we design a simple but effective score-based detection method to mitigate colluding attacks. Third, we construct an enhanced spectral-based outlier detector to accurately discard abnormal updates when the training data is not independent and identically distributed (non-IID). Finally, we design update denoising to rectify the direction of the slightly noisy but harmful updates. The four sequentially combined modules can effectively reconcile the contradiction in addressing non-colluding and colluding Byzantine attacks. Extensive experiments over three benchmark image classification datasets against four state-of-the-art Byzantine attacks demonstrate that FPD drastically outperforms existing defenses in IID and non-IID scenarios (with 30% improvement on model accuracy). © 2023, CC BY.

Log creation, maintenance, and its persist ordering are known to be performance bottlenecks for durable transactions on persistent memory. Existing hardware persistent memory transactions overlook an important opportunity for improving performance: some persistent data is algorithmically redundant such that it can be recovered from other data, removing the need for logging such data. The paper presents an ISA extension that enables selective logging for hardware persistent memory transactions for the first time. The ISA extension features two novel components: fine-grain logging and lazy persistency. Fine-grain logging allows hardware to log updates on data in the granularity of words without lengthening the critical path of data accesses. Lazy persistency allows updated data to remain in the cache after the transaction commits. Together, the new hardware persistent memory transaction outperforms the state-of-the-art hardware counterpart by 1.8× on average.
