Adversarial examples for deep neural networks (DNNs) have been shown to be transferable: examples that successfully fool one white-box surrogate model can also deceive other black-box models with different architectures. Although a bunch of empirical studies have provided guidance on generating highly transferable adversarial examples, many of these findings fail to be well explained and even lead to confusing or inconsistent advice for practical use. In this paper, we take a further step towards understanding adversarial transferability, with a particular focus on surrogate aspects. Starting from the intriguing "little robustness" phenomenon, where models adversarially trained with mildly perturbed adversarial samples can serve as better surrogates for transfer attacks, we attribute it to a trade-off between two dominant factors: model smoothness and gradient similarity. Our research focuses on their joint effects on transferability, rather than demonstrating the separate relationships alone. Through a combination of theoretical and empirical analyses, we hypothesize that the data distribution shift induced by off-manifold samples in adversarial training is the reason that impairs gradient similarity. Building on these insights, we further explore the impacts of prevalent data augmentation and gradient regularization on transferability and analyze how the trade-off manifest in various training methods, thus building a comprehensive blueprint for the regulation mechanisms behind transferability. Finally, we provide a general route for constructing superior surrogates to boost transferability, which optimizes both model smoothness and gradient similarity simultaneously, e.g., the combination of input gradient regularization and sharpness-aware minimization (SAM), validated by extensive experiments. In summary, we call for attention to the united impacts of these two factors for launching effective transfer attacks, rather than optimizing one while ignoring the other,

In the design and planning of next-generation Internet of Things(IoT),telecommunication,and satellite communication systems,controller placement is crucial in software-defined networking(SDN).The programmability of the SDN controller is sophisticated for the centralized control system of the entire ***,it creates a significant loophole for the manifestation of a distributed denial of service(DDoS)attack ***,recently a Distributed Reflected Denial of Service(DRDoS)attack,an unusual DDoS attack,has been ***,minimal deliberation has given to this forthcoming single point of SDN infrastructure failure ***,recently the high frequencies of DDoS attacks have increased *** this paper,a smart algorithm for planning SDN smart backup controllers under DDoS attack scenarios has *** proposed smart algorithm can recommend single or multiple smart backup controllers in the event of DDoS *** obtained simulated results demonstrate that the validation of the proposed algorithm and the performance analysis achieved 99.99%accuracy in placing the smart backup controller under DDoS attacks within 0.125 to 46508.7 s in SDN.

In the medical realm, the pivotal role of pathological Whole Slide Images (WSIs) in detecting cancer, tracking disease progression, and evaluating treatment efficacy is indisputable. Nevertheless, the identification and quantification of lesion areas in these gigapixel WSIs present a significant challenge due to their substantial size and the intricate details of lesions. To address these issues, we developed a novel multi-resolution and multi-scale cross fusion network (M 2 CF-Net), adept at managing large-scale pathological WSIs and capturing both fine details and context. Our model particularly focuses on segmenting local lymphocyte infiltration lesions in pathological WSIs of patients diagnosed with primary Sjogren's syndrome. By employing a patch-based training approach and combining interconnected elements via a multi-scale fusion technique, we enhance our model's capacity to detect and analyze structures and features in minor salivary gland section WSIs. Extensive experiments and ablation studies conducted on real-world clinical datasets affirm our model's superior accuracy in identifying lymphocyte-infiltrated regions over state-of-the-art models, with a performance improvement of up to 4.32% in terms of the Dice Similarity Coefficient.

In this paper, we propose a Graph Inception Diffusion Networks(GIDN) model. This model generalizes graph diffusion in different feature spaces, and uses the inception module to avoid the large amount of computations caused by complex network structures. We evaluate GIDN model on Open Graph Benchmark(OGB) datasets, reached an 11% higher performance than AGDN on ogbl-collab dataset. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Named data Networking (NDN) is an information-centric internet architecture that delivers packets based on the name of the content in the packet. A key component of NDN is the caching strategy designed to reduce total network latency and load on content producers. To improve the speed and reliability of web content delivery, existing caching strategies typically cache content on a large number of intermediate nodes, which incur significant energy consumption and memory overhead. However, in Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios, memory and energy of nodes are scarce resources. Therefore, in NDN-based IoT applications, traditional caching strategies can cause node failures due to energy depletion, which can significantly reduce the network operational lifetime as well as create problems that caching is supposed to solve. In this paper, a caching strategy based on node centrality and energy availability, called Energy-aware Approximate Betweenness Centrality (EABC) is proposed for NDN-based IoT. EABC uses a topology-based heuristic to cache data content on nodes with high centrality and makes caching decisions based on the remaining energy of the nodes. We evaluate EABC using simulations based on ndnSIM in different topologies and compare it with several existing NDN caching strategies. The results show that EABC performs better in different types of network topologies, reduces the average transmission delay of data and balances the energy consumption of highly central nodes, thus extending the network lifetime.

iControl3D: An Interactive System for Controllable 3D Scene Generation

3D content creation has long been a complex and time-consuming process, often requiring specialized skills and resources. While recent advancements have allowed for text-guided 3D object and scene generation, they still fall short of providing sufficient control over the generation process, leading to a gap between the user’s creative vision and the generated results. In this paper, we present iControl3D, a novel interactive system that empowers users to generate and render customizable 3D scenes with precise control. To this end, a 3D creator interface has been developed to provide users with fine-grained control over the creation process. Technically, we leverage 3D meshes as an intermediary proxy to iteratively merge individual 2D diffusion-generated images into a cohesive and unified 3D scene representation. To ensure seamless integration of 3D meshes, we propose to perform boundary-aware depth alignment before fusing the newly generated mesh with the existing one in 3D space. Additionally, to effectively manage depth discrepancies between remote content and foreground, we propose to model remote content separately with an environment map instead of 3D meshes. Finally, our neural rendering interface enables users to build a radiance field of their scene online and navigate the entire scene. Graft: Efficient Inference Serving for Hybrid Deep Learning with SLO Guarantees via DNN Re-alignment

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have been widely adopted for various mobile inference tasks, yet their ever-increasing computational demands are hindering their deployment on resource-constrained mobile devices. Hybrid deep learning partitions a DNN into two parts and deploys them across the mobile device and a server, aiming to reduce inference latency or prolong battery life of mobile devices. However, such partitioning produces (non-uniform) DNN fragments which are hard to serve efficiently on the server. This paper presents Graft—an efficient inference serving system for hybrid deep learning with latency service-level objective (SLO) guarantees. Our main insight is to mitigate the non-uniformity by a core concept called DNN re-alignment, allowing multiple heterogeneous DNN fragments to be restructured to share layers. To fully exploit the potential of DNN re-alignment, Graft employs fine-grained GPU resource sharing. Based on that, we propose efficient algorithms for merging, grouping, and re-aligning DNN fragments to maximize request batching opportunities, minimizing resource consumption while guaranteeing the inference latency SLO. We implement a Graft prototype and perform extensive experiments with five types of widely used DNNs and real-world network traces. Our results show that Graft improves resource efficiency by up to 70% compared with the state-of-the-art inference serving systems. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

In this paper, a deep multi-kernel clustering network, named DMKCN, is proposed to learn a high-quality and structurally separable kernel representation for the clustering task. Specifically, a multi-kernel learner is proposed to choose a suitable kernel function by learning a suitable combination of kernel functions automatically. A kernel-aid encoder module, consisting of a series of multi-kernel learners, is proposed to learn the structurally separable kernel representation. Besides, a dual self-supervised mechanism, consisting of a kernel self-supervised strategy and a representation self-supervised strategy, is designed to uniformly optimize the kernel representation learning and structural partition. The kernel self-supervised strategy is developed to supervise the multi-kernel learners with the consideration of an objective of clustering task, the representation self-supervised strategy is developed to guide the optimization of kernel representation learning by reconstructing the raw data. Extensive experiments on six real-world datasets demonstrate the outstanding performance of our proposed DMKCN.

Worldwide, it is forecasted that 131.5 million people will suffer from dementia by 2050, and the annual cost of care will increase from 818 billion USD in 2016 to 2 trillion USD by 2030, with burgeoning social consequences. Given a timely prediction of a dementia outcome in patients, appropriate mitigating interventions can be applied to reduce risk. However such prediction facilities need to be made available to wider populations, and these facilities cannot rely on specialised, costly and invasive testing (such as neuroimaging, cerebrospinal fluid collection, etc which constitute important instruments used in diagnosis), for interventions to have a meaningful quantitative impact. Hence an emerging need exists for the wider application of prognostic measures which can be deployed using lower cost data sources such as longitudinal records routinely collected by general practices. This paper proposes an efficient prediction modelling approach to the risk of dementia, using CPRD data collected from GP practices in UK, and based on machine learning in particular the Gradient Boosting Machines model combined with a survival model such as the Cox Proportional Hazard, encapsulated in a semi-supervised learning and model calibration methodology. © 2021 IEEE.

NIR-Prompt: A Multi-task Generalized Neural Information Retrieval Training Framework

Information retrieval aims to find information that meets users' needs from the corpus. Different needs correspond to different IR tasks such as document retrieval, open-domain question answering, retrieval-based dialogue, etc., while they share the same schema to estimate the relationship between texts. It indicates that a good IR model can generalize to different tasks and domains. However, previous studies indicate that state-of-the-art neural information retrieval (NIR) models, e.g., pre-trained language models (PLMs) are hard to generalize. It is mainly because the end-to-end fine-tuning paradigm makes the model overemphasize task-specific signals and domain biases but loses the ability to capture generalized essential signals. To address this problem, we propose a novel NIR training framework named NIR-Prompt for retrieval and reranking stages based on the idea of decoupling signal capturing and combination. NIR-Prompt exploits Essential Matching Module (EMM) to capture the essential matching signals and gets the description of tasks by Matching Description Module (MDM). The description is used as task-adaptation information to combine the essential matching signals to adapt to different tasks. Experiments under in-domain multi-task, out-of-domain multitask, and new task adaptation settings show that NIR-Prompt can improve the generalization of PLMs in NIR for both retrieval and reranking stages compared with baselines.
