The novel coronavirus (nCoV-19) was first detected in December 2019. It had spread worldwide and was declared coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic by March 2020. Patients presented with a wide range of symptoms affecting multiple organ systems predominantly the lungs. Severe cases required intensive care unit (ICU) admissions while there were asymptomatic cases as well. Although early detection of the COVID-19 virus by Real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is effective, it is not efficient;as there can be false negatives, it is time consuming and expensive. To increase the accuracy of in-vivo detection, radiological image-based methods like a simple chest X-ray (CXR) can be utilized. This reduces the false negatives as compared to solely using the RT-PCR technique. This paper employs various image processing techniques besides extracted texture features from the radiological images and feeds them to different artificial intelligence (AI) scenarios to distinguish between normal, pneumonia, and COVID-19 cases. The best scenario is then adopted to build an automated system that can segment the chest region from the acquired image, enhance the segmented region then extract the texture features, and finally, classify it into one of the three classes. The best overall accuracy achieved is 93.1% by exploiting Ensemble classifier. Utilizing radiological data to conform to a machine learning format reduces the detection time and increase the chances of survival. © 2021, Brno University of Technology. All rights reserved.

In many experimental contexts, it is necessary to statistically remove the impact of instrumental effects in order to physically interpret measurements. This task has been extensively studied in particle physics, where the deconvolution task is called unfolding. A number of recent methods have shown how to perform high-dimensional, unbinned unfolding using machine learning. However, one of the assumptions in all of these methods is that the detector response is correctly modeled in the Monte Carlo simulation. In practice, the detector response depends on a number of nuisance parameters that can be constrained with data. We propose a new algorithm called Profile OmniFold, which works in a similar iterative manner as the OmniFold algorithm while being able to simultaneously profile the nuisance parameters. We illustrate the method with a Gaussian example as a proof of concept highlighting its promising capabilities. © 2024, CC BY.

Metabolic engineering for biomass production using microorganisms’ cell has received considerable attention in recent years. This is due to the biomass products being extensively used in the field of food additives, supplements, pharmaceuticals, and polymer materials. In this paper, ethanol production in Escherichia coli (E. coli) is the desired product. Sugarcane and corn are often used to produce ethanol. However, one of the problems to produce adequate amounts of ethanol is that large areas are needed to plant sugarcane and corn. Furthermore, the amount of time for the process of dry milling and wet milling is high, which are 40 to 50 hours and 24 to 48 hours, respectively. The wet laboratory is also having limitation on the production of ethanol in microorganisms because the amount of the ethanol produced is not satisfying. Hence, a lot of metabolic engineering techniques is introduced to enhance the production of ethanol in E. coli, such as gene knockout strategy, but the production is yet to meet the demand. Therefore, this paper proposes a hybrid algorithm of Particle Swarm Optimization with the Artificial Bee Colony algorithm (PSOABC) to identify the optimal set of gene knockout strategy to improve the ethanol production in E. coli. A list of genes to knockout, production of the desired product, and growth rate are presented in this paper. PSOABC has shown better performance in terms of production, growth rate and accuracy.

Deep learning (DL) systems usually utilize asynchronous prefetch to improve data reading performance. However, the efficiency of the data transfer path from hard disk to DRAM is still limited by disk performance. The emerging non-volatile memory (NVRAM) provides a novel solution for this problem, while few existing researches have considered it. We propose a novel efficient data prefetch strategy for DL based on a heterogeneous memory system combining NVRAM with DRAM. Benefitting from the large capacity and fast reading speed of NVRAM, the strategy uses an asynchronous reading method named sliding NVRAM cache (SNC) to improve the performance of the data transfer paths. A sliding window is applied to map the data from disk to NVRAM and continuously update the data, while non-ideal writing performance of NVRAM can be remitted to a large extent in this strategy. Experiments show that SNC can improve the time performance of diverse deep neural networks training by more than 30%. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

With the development of Software-Defined Networking (SDN), its security problems have become important research content. Among these security problems, saturation attack is one of the most destructive problems. Saturation attacks can destroy SDN networks. Currently, neural graph networks have already been used for detecting saturation attacks in SDN. When constructing the graph based on K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) algorithm, the number of edges in the graph is fixed. That cannot reflect the different nodes’ relationship well. In addition, when using the Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) to detect saturation attack against SDN, only a partial graph structure and node features will be learned, causing the flow graph nodes information cannot be fully utilized. To overcome these issues, in this work, we propose USAGE, an uncertain flow graph and spatio-temporal graph network-based saturation attack detection method. More specifically, USAGE designs the CRAM algorithm and EGG model. The CRAM algorithm is designed to generate an uncertain flow graph for each traffic flow, which can represent the uncertain relationship among different nodes. EGG is a spatio-temporal graph convolutional network model, which is proposed to detect saturation attacks towards SDN switches. The evaluation results demonstrate that USAGE can generate a better graph than KNN and achieve high detection performance. Meanwhile, USAGE outperforms other methods in terms of TPR, TNR, accuracy, precision, recall, F-score, confusion matrix, ROC curves, and PR curves. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Cross-Language Binary-Source Code Matching with Intermediate Representations

Binary-source code matching plays an important role in many security and software engineering related tasks such as malware detection, reverse engineering and vulnerability assessment. Currently, several approaches have been proposed for binary-source code matching by jointly learning the embeddings of binary code and source code in a common vector space. Despite much effort, existing approaches target on matching the binary code and source code written in a single programming language. However, in practice, software applications are often written in different programming languages to cater for different requirements and computing platforms. Matching binary and source code across programming languages introduces additional challenges when maintaining multi-language and multi-platform applications. To this end, this paper formulates the problem of cross-language binary-source code matching, and develops a new dataset for this new problem. We present a novel approach XLIR, which is a Transformer-based neural network by learning the intermediate representations for both binary and source code. To validate the effectiveness of XLIR, comprehensive experiments are conducted on two tasks of cross-language binary-source code matching, and cross-language source-source code matching, on top of our curated dataset. Experimental results and analysis show that our proposed XLIR with intermediate representations significantly outperforms other state-of-the-art models in both of the two tasks. In this paper, we propose a noise-aware encoder-decoder framework to disentangle a clean saliency predictor from noisy training examples, where the noisy labels are generated by unsupervised handcrafted feature-based methods. The proposed model consists of two sub-models parameterized by neural networks: (1) a saliency predictor that maps input images to clean saliency maps, and (2) a noise generator, which is a latent variable model that produces noises from Gaussian latent vectors. The whole model that represents noisy labels is a sum of the two sub-models. The goal of training the model is to estimate the parameters of both sub-models, and simultaneously infer the corresponding latent vector of each noisy label. We propose to train the model by using an alternating back-propagation (ABP) algorithm, which alternates the following two steps: (1) learning back-propagation for estimating the parameters of two sub-models by gradient ascent, and (2) inferential back-propagation for inferring the latent vectors of training noisy examples by Langevin Dynamics. To prevent the network from converging to trivial solutions, we utilize an edge-aware smoothness loss to regularize hidden saliency maps to have similar structures as their corresponding images. Experimental results on several benchmark datasets indicate the effectiveness of the proposed model. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Vflh: A Following-the-Leader-History Based Algorithm for Adaptive Online Convex Optimization with Stochastic Constraints

This paper considers online convex optimization (OCO) with generated i.i.d. stochastic constraints, where the distribution of environment is changing and the performance is measured by \textit{adaptive regret}. The stochastic constraints are disclosed at each round to the learner after the decision is made. Different from the previous non-adaptive constrained OCO algorithm which is generalized based on the traditional online gradient descent algorithm, we propose a novel \textit{Virtual queue based Following-the-Leader-History} (VFLH) strategy to make the constrained OCO algorithm adaptive and design the VFLH algorithm. In this setting, the algorithm firstly generalizes all the experts in the specified time interval, then decides the optimal decision with each expert and gives out the final choice by combining the predictions of active experts. In terms of the algorithm performance, there are two performance metrics to be evaluated, i.e., the bounds of constraint violation and regret. For the constraint violation, we bring in the multi-objective drift analysis approach to deal with the constraints via a virtual queue which provides a new method to bound the constraints violations. For the regret, we give out its upper bound and then achieve a corresponding lower bound that proves the upper bound is sufficiently tight. Finally, we provide some numerical experiments to validate the feasibility of our algorithm. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Converge to the Truth: Factual Error Correction via Iterative Constrained Editing

Given a possibly false claim sentence, how can we automatically correct it with minimal editing? Existing methods either require a large number of pairs of false and corrected claims for supervised training or do not handle well errors spanning over multiple tokens within an utterance. In this paper, we propose VENCE, a novel method for factual error correction (FEC) with minimal edits. VENCE formulates the FEC problem as iterative sampling editing actions with respect to a target density function. We carefully design the target function with predicted truthfulness scores from an offline trained fact verification model. VENCE samples the most probable editing positions based on back-calculated gradients of the truthfulness score concerning input tokens and the editing actions using a distantly-supervised language model (T5). Experiments on a public dataset show that VENCE improves the well-adopted SARI metrics by 5.3 (or a relative improvement of 11.8%) over the previous best distantly-supervised methods.
