The lung is one of the prime respiratory organs in human physiology, and its abnormality will severely disrupt the respiratory system. Lung Nodule (LN) is one of the abnormalities, and early screening and treatment are necessary to reduce its harshness. The proposed work aims to implement the Convolutional-Neural-Network (CNN) segmentation methodology to extract the LN in various lung CT slices, such as axial, coronal, and sagittal planes. This work consists of the following phases;(i) Image collection and pre-processing, (ii) Ground-truth generation, (iii) CNN-supported segmentation, and (iv) Performance evaluation and validation. In this work, the merit of pre-trained CNN segmentation schemes is verified using (i) One-fold training and (ii) Two-fold training methods. The test images for this study are collected from The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA) database. The experimental investigation is executed using Python®, and the outcome of this study confirms that the VGG-SegNet helps to get better values of Jaccard (>88%), Dice (>93%), and Accuracy (>96%) compared to other CNN methods. © 2023 The Authors. The eye is the prime sensory organ in physiology, and the abnormality in the eye severely influences the vision system. Therefore, eye irregularity is commonly assessed using imaging schemes, and Fundus Retinal Image (FRI) supported eye screening is one of the ophthalmological practices. This work proposed a Deep-Learning Procedure (DLP) to recognize Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) in FI. The proposed work presents the experimental work with different DLP methods found in the literature. This work is executed with two modes;(i) DR detection using conventional deep-features and (ii) DR discovery using deep ensemble features. To demonstrate this work, 1800 fundus images (900 regular and 900 DR class) are considered for the assessment, and the advantage of proposed plan is confirmed using various performance metrics. The experimental outcome of this study confirms that the AlexNet-based detection provides a better detection (>96%), and the deep ensemble features of AlexNet, VGG16, and ResNet18 provide a detection accuracy of >98% on the chosen FRI database. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.. The problem of how to assess cross-modality medical image synthesis has been largely unexplored. The most used measures like PSNR and SSIM focus on analyzing the structural features but neglect the crucial lesion location and fundamental k-space speciality of medical images. To overcome this problem, we propose a new metric K-CROSS to spur progress on this challenging problem. Specifically, K-CROSS uses a pre-trained multi-modality segmentation network to predict the lesion location, together with a tumor encoder for representing features, such as texture details and brightness intensities. To further reflect the frequency-specific information from the magnetic resonance imaging principles, both k-space features and vision features are obtained and employed in our comprehensive encoders with a frequency reconstruction penalty. The structure-shared encoders are designed and constrained with a similarity loss to capture the intrinsic common structural information for both modalities. As a consequence, the features learned from lesion regions, k-space, and anatomical structures are all captured, which serve as our quality evaluators. We evaluate the performance by constructing a large-scale cross-modality neuroimaging perceptual similarity (NIRPS) dataset with 6,000 radiologist judgments. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms other metrics, especially in comparison with the radiologists on NIRPS. Identifying the origin of high-energy hadronic jets (‘jet tagging’) has been a critical benchmark problem for machine learning in particle physics. Jets are ubiquitous at colliders and are complex objects that serve as prototypical examples of collections of particles to be categorized. Over the last decade, machine learning-based classifiers have replaced classical observables as the state of the art in jet tagging. Increasingly complex machine learning models are leading to increasingly more effective tagger performance. Our goal is to address the question of convergence - are we getting close to the fundamental limit on jet tagging or is there still potential for computational, statistical, and physical insights for further improvements? We address this question using state-of-the-art generative models to create a realistic, synthetic dataset with a known jet tagging optimum. Various state-of-the-art taggers are deployed on this dataset, showing that there is a significant gap between their performance and the optimum. Aspect Sentiment Triplet Extraction (ASTE) aims to extract triplets from sentences, where each triplet includes an entity, its associated sentiment, and the opinion span explaining the reason for the sentiment. Most existing research addresses this problem in a multi-stage pipeline manner, which neglects the mutual information between such three elements and has the problem of error propagation. In this paper, we propose a Semantic and Syntactic Enhanced aspect Sentiment triplet Extraction model (S3E2) to fully exploit the syntactic and semantic relationships between the triplet elements and jointly extract them. Specifically, we design a Graph-Sequence duel representation and modeling paradigm for the task of ASTE: we represent the semantic and syntactic relationships between word pairs in a sentence by graph and encode it by Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), as well as modeling the original sentence by LSTM to preserve the sequential information. Under this setting, we further apply a more efficient inference strategy for the extraction of triplets. Extensive evaluations on four benchmark datasets show that S3E2 significantly outperforms existing approaches, which proves our S3E2’s superiority and flexibility in an end-to-end fashion. Towards open-world text-guided face image generation and manipulation

—The existing text-guided image synthesis methods can only produce limited quality results with at most 2562 resolution and the textual instructions are constrained in a small Corpus. In this work, we propose a unified framework for both face image generation and manipulation that produces diverse and high-quality images with an unprecedented resolution at 10242 from multimodal inputs. More importantly, our method supports open-world scenarios, including both image and text, without any re-training, fine-tuning, or post-processing. To be specific, we propose a brand new paradigm of text-guided image generation and manipulation based on the superior characteristics of a pretrained GAN model. Our proposed paradigm includes two novel strategies. The first strategy is to train a text encoder to obtain latent codes that align with the hierarchically semantic of the aforementioned pretrained GAN model. The second strategy is to directly optimize the latent codes in the latent space of the pretrained GAN model with guidance from a pretrained language model. The latent codes can be randomly sampled from a prior distribution or inverted from a given image, which provides inherent supports for both image generation and manipulation from multi-modal inputs, such as sketches or semantic labels, with textual guidance. To facilitate text-guided multi-modal synthesis, we propose the MULTI-MODAL CELEBA-HQ, a large-scale dataset consisting of real face images and corresponding semantic segmentation map, sketch, and textual descriptions. Understanding how grid cells perform path integration calculations remains a fundamental problem. In this paper, we conduct theoretical analysis of a general representation model of path integration by grid cells, where the 2D self-position is encoded as a higher dimensional vector, and the 2D self-motion is represented by a general transformation of the vector. We identify two conditions on the transformation. One is a group representation condition that is necessary for path integration. The other is an isotropic scaling condition that ensures locally conformal embedding, so that the error in the vector representation translates conformally to the error in the 2D self-position. Then we investigate the simplest transformation, i.e., the linear transformation, uncover its explicit algebraic and geometric structure as matrix Lie group of rotation, and explore the connection between the isotropic scaling condition and a special class of hexagon grid patterns. Finally, with our optimization-based approach, we manage to learn hexagon grid patterns that share similar properties of the grid cells in the rodent brain. The learned model is capable of accurate long distance path integration.

Machine learning-based unfolding has enabled unbinned and high-dimensional differential cross section measurements. Two main approaches have emerged in this research area: one based on discriminative models and one based on generative models. The main advantage of discriminative models is that they learn a small correction to a starting simulation while generative models scale better to regions of phase space with little data. We propose to use Schrödinger Bridges and diffusion models to create SBUnfold, an unfolding approach that combines the strengths of both discriminative and generative models. The key feature of SBUnfold is that its generative model maps one set of events into another without having to go through a known probability density as is the case for normalizing flows and standard diffusion models. We show that SBUnfold achieves excellent performance compared to state of the art methods on a synthetic Z+jets dataset. © 2023, CC BY.

Gradient-type iterative methods for solving Hermitian eigenvalue problems can be accelerated by using preconditioning and deflation techniques. A preconditioned steepest descent iteration with implicit deflation (PSD-id) is one of such methods. The convergence behavior of the PSD-id is recently investigated based on the pioneering work of Samokish on the preconditioned steepest descent method (PSD). The resulting non-asymptotic estimates indicate a superlinear convergence of the PSD-id under strong assumptions on the initial guess. The present paper utilizes an alternative convergence analysis of the PSD by Neymeyr under much weaker assumptions. We embed Neymeyr’s approach into the analysis of the PSD-id using a restricted formulation of the PSD-id. More importantly, we extend the new convergence analysis of the PSD-id to a practically preferred block version of the PSD-id, or BPSD-id, and show the cluster robustness of the BPSD-id.
